Why Do You Hate VSnares?

I only read about hate towards Aaron Funk just lately
around here, even the Chocolate Wheelchair hype is quashed
next to the constant Snares bashing. There a lot of fans
here but what I want to know is...

Venetian Snares haters.. Why do you hate him?

venetian snares bashing is even more boring than venetian
snares music

people make out.

i used to not care for his music much but I had just heard
some releases he did that didnt sit well with me. He really
is very talented and I feel bad that for whatever reason
he's bashed upon. Maybe we should make it so anyone bashing
him should have a song they did that they can post for us to
tear apart after.

I've been asking also asking myself why people hate vsnares.
I think most of them are just jelous or just say they don't
like him because everyone else likes him.

mogwai, radiohead, aphex..

I hold him in high regard for his beat-programming alone,
not just how it sounds either. It really adds to music
(personally) knowing that the artist has slaved over it. I
like to sense that extra effort.

all i can say is i've never heard a track by him that was
any good, just another genre exercise and nothing to return
to when it's over. though i've only heard a few tracks, i'm
definitely not going to waste money gambling that the stuff
i haven't heard is that much better. so i suppose i don't
really hate (i've probably never even expressed an opinion
about snares here) but am not interested in snares at all.
although the truth is, i'm jealous of him, and eager to defy
the consensus opinions of the messageboard majority.

I suspect that people who don't care for VS are largely
those who can't get into the pure aggression of it all.
Some people need something more structured or, at least,
chill.

I think the question in everyone's mind is when are Warp or
Rephlex gonna release a Venetian Snares record? I think that
would take his cred to another level not that he needs it.

i do not dislike him, but i think he's overhyped...
his music is ok, can be very good, but frankly, i think some
music-making members here at xltronic make better music! so
yeah, i'm not a music maker but i totally understand if
people are jealous of him : )

i just have Higgins Ultra Low Track Glue Funk Hits
1972-2006, some tracks are very good, one excellent (Banana
Seat Girl), but it has the worst album construction i've
ever heard - and i'm sorry, in my opinion a good album
construction is not a "bonus", it is indispensable. if you
bake a schwarzwald-kuchen for example, would you just put
the chocolate cake in a dish, then splash at random a lot of
whipped cream over it not giving a fuck if it's nauseating,
and then throw some cherries on top? you can do it,
yeah, but frankly it's much better if you do it well and
alternate the layers...

i like the aggressivity of it for a while, but vsnares
aggressivity becomes annoying or boring after more than 1 or
2 tracks of the kind - i picture tracks like Vokeheads,
Deadman DJ, Cobra Commander... like little nervous
hyperexcited kids who just mess up with everything and
destroy stuff, jump around etc. without thinking... after a
while, you just want them to calm down and stop - probably
slap them in the face.

i feel like VSnares was just an amateur who got lucky
because someone well-known recognized and helped him come
into fame and the professionnal rank, but other people would
have better deserved the place he has now...

i feel a similar same way about BoC by the way. they're
better than VSnares, there is no question about it, but they
also get more fame than what they deserve.

DrumNBassJerk > Ryoji Ikeda? Bernhard Günter? Autechre?
John Cage? Steve Reich? John Zorn? The Young Gods? (and in
their time, maybe Frank Zappa? and the early 80's
Einstürzende Neubauten?)

(and for fuck's sake, it's not innovative at all,
it's just more extreme... he didn't invent anything, he
pushed the boundaries pretty far.)

i used to hate aaron for that gay track and remixing martin
luther king jr's word blah de blah de blah... why was i so
anal? then some guy was going on about him stealing melodies
from other peoples records and it's like well so fucking
what? maybe you will like them more the second time around.
funk said something along the lines of why worry about me,
what about you? wise words. higgins is good along with
2370894 so i shall just avoid what i don't like and not let
it affect what i do like by him. it's true, instead of
worrying over someones musical details just enjoy what you
can and spend your time worrying about yourself. i'm sure
aaron has plenty of things to hate already rather then some
faceless twat like me dissing him over the most nit picking
details. what i don't like the next will anyway.

nobody really understands anybody.

i have no problem with venetian snares. i actually enjoy
some of his music - there I said it. Albeit there are
musicians better than him, but nearly every musician has
someone who's better at doing what they do, because no idea
is original. Anyways, I like VSnares music - but his poetry
sure does suck.

As I said above I don't hate him, but he does get some
REALLY undue adulation from some people.

As for people not getting into the pure agression of his
stuff, his early stuff in particular I found totally cheesy,
as though he was trying to be nasty but in a cheap horror
movie sort of way.

I think he has developed a lot and some of his stuff now I
like, but he is still just another face in the crowd for me,
not outstanding.

just to let you guys know - his newer stuff is MUCH
differant from anything you guys have heard (or even i have
heard) he finished everything on the chocolate wheelchair
album over a year ago - he will be releasing an album he
just recently completed sometime next year, which is done in
Dolby 12.1

offline promo from United Kingdom on 2003-09-04 14:34 [#00850062]

His early stuff marks him out dramatically. I think the fact
that he explored more horroresque themes is cool. So much
music tends to fit a certain sort of nicey nicey vibe or
cliched hard style where as he and others like him created
this sort of nasty witch horror in the forest sound. I found
the whole thing at first quite hard to appreciate but over
time I began to appreciate it. I think its great that not
only are his beats different but so is his actual music.

offline corticalstim from Canada on 2003-09-04 14:38 [#00850071]

personally - i think there are 3 albums everyone should
check out before they start saying bad things about him

doll doll doll
higgins...
witboas

i think that if someone listens to these 3 dramatically
differant albums they can have a better feel of what his
music is like and not just call it "gabba with better
equipment" - even a short listen to nymphomatriarchs would
have you throw that comment out the window.

promo > i am serious! i'm repeating myself for the
47th time maybe but BoC isn't varied at all, isn't very
original either and isn't even the best at what they do
(just listen to Bola - Fyuti, or Telefon Tel Aviv -

I haven't heard much of his stuff either, but from what I

enjoy but at others it does get a bit much for me. Maybe I
would prefer some of his other stuff. Only heard Higgins

i agree with uzim that boc is boring, the uninspired 4/4
'boom tick boom tick' beats with accompanied by the melodies
from which the sound if often quite similar in the different
tracks, bored the hell out of me quite quickly

i bought two of their releases and even liked MHTRTC for a
short while, but i soon found that it's all the same to me.
i never listen to their stuff anymore, they're overhyped and
-rated imo

vsnares on the other hand i find innovative (sp?), i agree
that he's no musical talent but just compare his albums,
they all got their own feeling and sound to them. i listen
to his stuff almost daily and until now it has never bored
me.

needless to say it's all personal opinion

I don't normally go in for the kind of music Snares writes,
but he just does it so well... I rate him as one of the most
interesting/original guys in electronic music at the moment
- Breaking out of the 4/4 mould and producing all his stuff
on a simple Amiga-style tracker program has been a huge
inspiration for me.
I can totally see why some ppl wouldn't get into it
though... But yeah, I don't get why there's so much Snares
bashing 'round these forums? He's such a nice bloke...
