harhar, only kidding but its because he releases so many albums etc of similar material: the trashy thing is a bit boring, cos there are only so many 200bpm drum rolls you can fit into one distorted song. he's cool but if someone said "you can listen to squarepusher or venetian snares" i would choose SP any day cos it is better music to listen to but you can still spazz out to it... from my experiences it is fun but not substantial

I think he's still developing his sound though - I've never heard anything remotely like the Chocolate Wheelchair album before! Has such a wierd vibe to it - I admit though, I'm not into all the Amen cut-ups so much, a bit over-used in his early stuff maybe - But these days you gotta release a lot of stuff to stand a chance of making a living out of music...

of course, and i'd be into the 'similar style'-artist too, it's a silly question though, it's not like people like his stuff 'cause it's original,
no, it's original and (some) people like it and therefore are into him and praise him
(the way he breaks out of the 4/4 patters with most of his tracks caught my attention and was one of the reasons i liked his stuff (it prevents it from getting boring imo), i know few other artists who do this. autechre in some tracks)
you can't accept people like his stuff ey tits

"these days you gotta release a lot of stuff to stand a chance of making a living out of music..."
That's true, this is from an interview with him:
Milk Factory:You've released two albums in 2001 - one which was a collaboration with Speedbranch - and three in 2002. How do you find the time to write so much music?
VS:It was 3 albums in 2001 and some 12"s. I really don't do much else. I'm not interested in golfing or knitting... and most of the time it's too fucking cold to leave the house.

I think he should release under a few different aliases, that would change the perspective on his work quite a bit...
I remember RJ used to be just as prolific back in the early 90's.

Snares has about 2 really amazing inspiring tracks per album. Its kinda like uzim said - the albums have poor structure and they dont flow well. I also agree with his statement about slapping the hyperactive kids. I'd wish VS would settle down sometimes because it DOES get to the point where you say "Too much!". Also a ton of his songs ARE boring because they all sound the same and the only purpose behind them seems to be to make your head explode.
A list of my favorite vsnares tracks at the moment:
Chinaski Poor kakarookee Fluff Master Kakenrooken slivlobits lioness British IDM fanfare Cashew Childrens Limbo crawlspace dollmaker earth edgewood park fraujager gottrahmen happy morning condom factory i rent the ocean suffocate twisting ligneous underground circus jesus salt fire is the devil cruel whole cruel whole (abelcain mix) stuck warm body Yor

I do agree that some of his records do lack an obvious start, middle and end. The structure of his records is much to be desired. But he is for sure a huge talent; he is definitely on a different path to Squarepusher. I would say he definitely has "musical talent". I just think that because he is pushing the boat out even more than before it is getting even harder for people to get to grips with. It is true that some of his tracks are so wild that they can be hard to get into. However I'm always amazed at what he does even with the stuff that you just simply cannot dance to. And lets not forget the production and the detail. There are a lot of details in the drum programming and effects etc its not something he can do in 2 secs.
I've heard Bola and wasn't blow away with him. BOC are a million times better than Bola. I'll admit though initially when I heard BOC I thought they were so boring. But somehow one just got it, the soul the uplifting melodies, for me they just do it so well. I do not care that their tracks are similar or whatever. I just don't listen to electronic music primarily for squeaks and squawks and bleeps and bloops and like to listen to it for soul and a darn good tune. Decent electronic music or IDM or whatever delivers that soul more than any other style of music and thats why BOC are so good.

Yeah, I'd say Snares's music is definetly challenging - I personally love the way he structures his tunes - It's so utterly original - I'm glad he doesn't go for the cliqued build-ups, drops, etc... His work just evolves and mutates, it's almost like classical music, like he's thinking of where he wants to the tune to go next every step of the way.
I'd definetly agree that he has musical talent - Pretty serious musical talent to write in such unconventional time signitures (at least for most modern producers) and use dischord so well.
There is a lot of his work that I just can't get into though...

He played this track I really liked at ATP near the end of the set... Had a speak'n spell type machine going mad over a pretty laid back 4/4 bass drum - I don't know if that track was ever released?
My favorite Snares tracks are prolly Dollmaker, In Quod and Dad...
Although I really like the direction he's taken on his new album - I think I'd rate most of those tracks as my new favorite Snares stuff.
Sounds like he's getting more melodic and kind of surreal. But honestly, I don't know how he writes some of that stuff... When I heard Chocolate Wheelchair Album for the first time I couldn't believe it... It's certainly the only music that's had that affect on me since listening to Aphex/Autechre for the first time over ten years ago.

promo > the same thing can bring different emotions to different people, so there is no need to argue then... you prefer Boards Of Canada (which i find too down-to-earth-sounding to be emotional for me), i prefer Bola, Telefon Tel Aviv (which you like a lot less than BoC) or -best, i forgot this one- Susumu Yokota (by far), that's ok! =)
maybe there is a "something" unknown to me in BoC that i do not perceive, and that makes BoC great to those who can discern it.

the best vs track i ever heard was yor on john peel about 6 months ago, when the cd kept skipping but in a almost unnoticable way, so the same 50ish seconds was looped for about 9 or so minutes and it was really lush, until jp finally realised and faded it out.

I can't understand how people say Funk isn't as musical as Squarepusher. What bull! He is easily capable of very complex musical pieces and they all have disernable structure to them without a doubt. He truly knows how to constuct a piece there is no way on earth what he does is somehow random! Its just that he is working with such fast tempos that maybe it seems hard to get to grips with. The thing is at 210-220bpm you can get away with one or two things structure wise that would be picked up a slower tempos. But he definitely has the musical capability. He just has a very inventive brain and just does more in a track and creates more interesting variations than normal. However he is still working within a particular framework though. He has to otherwise it would just sound like absolute rubbish and simply no one - I mean no one would appreciate it. I think he is working within a 4/4 time signature though, I don't think he uses other time signatures. He just chops it up a bit more. In order to do stuff like that his brain is working at say 300% when he is creating a track rather than say 50% of the average musicmaker I would say.
