How much d'you reckon he got? 50? 100K? more!?
Also it's been cut up for the ad, wonder if he did that
himself.

he got 100k for the pirelli advert and that was 10 years ago
now, so 150k?

the tank and sub.

you'd have to be a fucking headcase to turn down 100k for 30
sec of a cut up remix of a song that about 0.1% of the
country have heard anyway.

to call him a whore is slightly over the top - it's not
going to launch him into the charts is it?

What the hell is wrong with selling your song for an advert?
It doesn't compromise anything that he stands for.

He has the freedom to not do this kind of thing; he is
financially secure. And yet he chooses to be bought and sold
like anyone else. Sad.

I'd be much happier if they gave that money to someone who
really needs it, like Michael Jackson. What's he going to do
when he runs out of prosthetic noses? Hire himself out for
Hallowe'en?

because it's a collection of his work, most of which was

OH NOES YOUR SONG IS IN A COMMERCIAL

THAT MEANS YOU DONT BELEIVE IN ANYTHING,

jeez marlower, sometimes i just wonder.

a lot of you ppl like to keep this music and your groups
(ae, boc) in your back pocket too much.

you "like" the fact that no one else listens to it, you
"like" the fact that you understand it and they dont.

it' slike deep down inside you think you are better than
others for understanding this music and just how great it
really is.

yet if it goes on the radio or some shit, they SOLD OUT

OH NOES!!!!

Lets clarify. Our objections (if I may be so bold as to
speak for a consensus), are not to any increased popularity
as a result of wider exposure, but to him selling his music
to promote automobiles. He's contributing to the profits of
Mercedes outside his remit i.e. he selss records and makes
money for record companies but has no choice. Here he DOES
have a choice as its not part of music distribution chain.

So to all the AFX sycophants: grow up you fuckin losers and
move out of your mum's house.

Now why the fuck are people having a go at Marlowe? His
opinion is very fcking valid to this topic. Only a couple of
people here are the voice of reason and not jumping at
something he might've implied but didn't.

26 Mixes For Cash:

Just so everyone understands, 26 Mixes For Cash means
that at the time each remix was done it made Richard a
little money. The artists paid Richard to remix their work.
The album title does not mean that he's rereleasing remixes
to make more money.

IMO the song does not fit the commercials - makes me wonder
why it was chosen, as I could think of better suited songs
for the advert.

possibly for the attraction of having a 'dangerous' artist
like aphex twin seen to 'commend & condone their product
(which is aimed at well-off middle-class and middle-class
wannabe people); possibly, they might think little Johnny
Brat might associate the music with the product and say "dad
get me a BMW or I'll scweam!" Just possibilities. to bring
some 'respect' to their warez

i think it's a pretty dope commercial really. i like the
monotoneness of the colors, and i think the traq goes ok
with it. it has a nice sureal spacey quality.

I mean, if this were Rage Against the Machine doing a
Mercedes ad then that would be one thing..

..but fucking come on. It's techno music. The most
hedonistic/disposable musical artform that currently exists.
Making a bucket of cash from a track that took maybe a day
or 2 to produce is how one turns this venture into
enterprise.

aphex twin isn't techno, nor is it 'throwaway' or
'hedonistic'

'aphex twin isn't techno'
>I disagree

'nor is it 'throwaway' or
'hedonistic'

> Maybe not, but technoculture has it's roots in these
ideals and Aphex Twin and his music is a result of this.

why do you disagree with the techno label? and do you view
it as some kind of inferior form of music, whereby it
doesn't matter how it is exploited? I'm unsure why you
emphasised it so much.

I agree - I like the 'motion lines' around everything... I
just think the music doesn't fit it - when I first saw it, I
thought of Polynomial-C as a better track (the piano bits in
Poly would go good with those 'motion lines' I think).

Pomme, you and Marlowe hug and make up now, mmmmkay? (watch
them hands Marlowe...) :)

I just call electronic music techno. Aphex Twins music is
electronic, so I call it techno.

I do not view electronic music as inferior, quite the
opposite.. it's probably my favorite style of music and has
been for over a decade. However, I believe that electronic
music is designed to be exploited. Look at the way
it's composed; the emphasis has always been on the character
of the sound rather than the composition itself. These new
and exciting sounds last for a short time and are discarded
to make room for the new ideas. It seems at times that the
artists who are willing to disregard a style or technique
faster earn the most attention.. Look at Aphex, no 2 albums
are the same.

The genre (and all its many, many subgenres) has it's
cornerstone in the club/rave environment. Show me a group of
people with a shorter attention span than 1,000 kids on
drugs. It's get high/listen to the track/go home. Next week
we do it all over again, but who likes a dj with the same 15
records?

Again, part of the success of 'IDM' is it's willingness to
progress with little or no regard for historical references.
This progression, I believe, is a testament to electronics
disposability... and I don't think there's anything wrong
with that.

Let me ask you this. Explain to me why Richard selling his
track for a Mercedes ad is a bad thing.
