Simply amazing. Got my Wii last night, played it for 6
hours straight, haven't slept. It took me two and a half
hours to reach the first dungeon. Six and a half hours into
it, and I haven't even reached the second. Definitely an ace
game. It's dark, beautiful, and exciting.

the gamecube version is scheduled for the 13th of december,
in the U.S. at least.

read: you'll have to buy a Wii if you can't wait. it's a bit
shitty a move, really.

funny thing is, GameSpot gave it a 8.8 and now all the
fanbois are foaming at the mouth.

i thought GC version was coming out Dec. 12th.

according to Wikipedia the differences are mostly in the use
of the Wii motion control remote as to how you shoot the bow
or fight w/ the sword.

the interesting bit is that the Wii version may be an exact
mirror to the GC version. Link is traditionally left handed
and that's how the game was developed, but when they decided
to expand it to the Wii, they found that most people were
right handed or at least fought w/ the sword/remote in their
right hand, so they horizontally flipped the whole game.
people who like the romote in the left hand can still fight
that way but the game is still righty. not confirmed but
interesting.

hope they make the GC version worth it cause i'm going to
have that one too. some cool promo thing maybe or some extra
rooms or a dungeon.

I'll remember the aftermath of the 8.8 for a long time, that
was a great night on the internet, even better than the 7.9.
I like the video game culture more than actually playing
video games. The 8.8 did seem pretty inexplicable though.
Opinions are weird.

I wasn't able to get a Wii but my video game plate is too
full right now already, so I can deal with it. Christmas is
going to wail.

Anybody with a Wii play around on the Virtual Console yet?

the 8.8 storm is still roaring. it's funny reading the
comments. they either read as some indifferent guy going
"what? hey, it's just a review on a website, get over it" or
as someone on the verge of crying and vomiting at the same
time.

8.8 is an incredible score, who cares how a game scores on a
website anyway.

yea, well gamespot reviews are generally unfair, because it
all depends on some crappy math. Though I think there are
some reasonable people working for them, they still should
refocus and redesign their rating system a bit. Not just
because of Zelda, heavens, but because it's systemic. For
entertainment, turn to Gamespot; for quality reviews, turn
to IGN.

surely they people who focus only on the mathematics of
ratings are as stupid as the rating system itself?

it's not really the point, anyway. they're also attacking
the review itself.

and I don't agree - I like GameSpot's reviews a lot more
than the IGN reviews, which seem to want to placate the
fanbois just a little too much.

Ideally, there wouldn't be a numbered system anyway, at
least not one with such small increments. It just gets
absurd when people use point differentials of .1 or .2
points or whatever in arguments to make some sort of
''objective'' point. Plus, people will cite, say, Twilight
Princess' IGN score and compare it to older Zelda games as
if TP's 9.5 implies it's an inferior game to Ocarina of
Time, which got a 10, or Wind Waker*, which got a 9.6. Then
they'll throw a hissyfit at Matt Cassamassina or whoever.
Without considering the reasoning and context within the
review. The numbers take precendence over everything.

It's fun though.

*I'm in the minority that liked Wind Waker's art style a lot
more than Twilight Princess', but the game felt insultingly
easy and derivative to me. 9.6 YEAH RIGHT, FAT IDIOT
REVIEWER

qrter, i agree ign wants to give good grades to
well-established franchises, but i simply feel their reviews
are more in-depth. But that's just taste. But consider this:
Zelda got a "tilt" of full 10, but somehow the overall score
is 8.8? That's just dumb.

Which brings me to IGN's review. Actually, this time they
might have nailed the score (says someone who obviously
hasn't yet played Twilight Princess!). Some of the other
reviewers are giving ridiculous scores like 9.9 or even
10.0. Anything above 9.7 is highly suspect in my books. I
remember when a Finnish magazine gave a 100/100 for the
first Donkey Kong Country, which was total nonsense. People
get way too carried away in the hype. No game is perfect,
not even worth 9.9 I would think!

Ophecks, you know I've played all but the rarest of Zeldas,
and Wind Waker is nowhere near the top, but still I would
give it a fair 9.2 or so, it's incredibly fun.

As for comparing scores, I think it's strange, but perhaps
unavoidable, that game scores "devalue" over time, as if
graphical development alone would make a good game less
valuable in a few years. Ideally this shouldn't happen.

Speaking of untimely reviews, now the jackasses at Gamespot
are reviewing downloadable online games for Wii like Sonic
and Altered Beast. They just gave Sonic The Hedgehog 7.3. I
repeat, they just gave Sonic 7.3. Somebody tell them stop
being idiots!

retro games are dying because of this shit.

emulators can never replace the actual console, but when you
have a nintendo device hooked to your tv that can play any
game, would you bother dusting off your actual nintendo
machines?

cant fight the laziness..

I think emulation has been great for retro gaming, and so
will the Virtual Console/Xbox Live Arcade/Playstation
Network. I personally hate dragging out my old consoles
(some of which hardly work anymore) and having to manage all
the wires and crap in my entertainment center. It's the same
old games, the same old intellectual property, no matter how
you play it. It's not like they're lossy MP3s or something,
they're the same thing.

The convenience is great for people that have elaborate
setups and don't want to deal with hookup bullshit, that's
an annoying waste of time and space and effort. And you can
get the best possible picture quality. Like a component
picture for systems that couldn't be played with that kind
of clarity and vibrance before.

Hopefully this is a big success and some of the more obscure
gems that people didn't get to play before will find a new
audience and market.

I just realized you were talking about the ORIGINAL Sonic
the Hedgehog. I though you were complaining about one of the
new Sonic games, which are crap, but man, Sonic 1 deserves a
9 on the sountrack alone. I see they also gave Mario 64 an
8.0. Dubious.

Maybe they're factoring the value, though... these are not
good prices, especially considering you can buy Sonic
Collection or the other Sega collections for PS2 for like 20
bucks and get a shitload of games on there.

heh, i really dont like super mario 64. the gameplay and
controls just piss me off, but oh well.
as for emulators, i have no problem with it, cos it is
convient and such, and like, nothing can make me 100% happy
but playing the real things. when i got me nes, it was such
a joy to have one as part of the family again, and to play
games using those terrible square controls, but its such a
hassle having to look after it.
so im happy with both emulators and real thing.

wow, Mario score is dubious indeed! They're complaining
about the graphics like the game was made yesterday. They
also gave it a "value" of 7 - what?? Ridiculous amount of
stars, man. Whether you think the game (like sonic) is an
immortal classic is another thing (I do), but to pull old
games down because of time is shameful enough...

That said, they're milking the cash cow with this. I
remember having faint hopes in the early days of the virtual
console hype (circa E3 of 2005) of getting to play TONS of
old games for little or NO fees. But then reality came into
the picture: Nintendo is a company of secondary merchandise.
I'll stick to my emulators - especially since the review of
mario64 mentions "a couple of minor emulation issues". What
happened to pitch-perfect emulation?

Got a Wii and Zelda Sunday morning. I can't stop playing it.
I'm 20 hours in (I've had it 3 days!) and I feel like I've
barely scratched the surface of the game. It's epic and the
pacing is amazing. Great art design and some really creative
boss encounters.

The Wii controls are solid. Using the pointer for weapons
and other things (I don't want to spoil anything) work very
well.

interesting.

i always find part of the retro value comes from bothering
with all the wires, and jamming in the cartridge at a funny
angle to make the game run. It's a lot more satisfactory
than just going to a menu, selecting game and knowing that
it will run. Just like you listen more carefully/focused
after putting a cd in the cd player as opposed to clicking
through your m3 library on your ipod. IMO.

I love the click feel on the NES on/off button for example
and those cartridges are just great. And playing mario bros
with a nes controller or a snes/cube/wii one is a huge
difference.

Maybe i'm being weird, but I'd never get rid of my consoles
no matter how close they get to replicating the whole deal
in a shiny new digital package.

I'd never get rid of my old consoles either, but I like the
pick up and play aspect of old games, for me that's the
biggest selling point of retro gaming, the instant
accessibility and gratification. It's a nice change from the
commitment and effort you have to put into modern gaming.

But I just can't pick up and play my old consoles. For one
thing, it's an adventure just to get my NES working, and for
another, I have all my current gen systems hooked up to my
TV and I have no inputs left. It's not worth the effort for
me to dig out the wires and then manage them (my room is
already a jungle of wires). Mario 2 plays and sounds exactly
the same on an Xbox emulator anyway, and looks crisper.

I get what you're coming from though, and it feels nostalgic
to play with the old hardware. I never personally feel like
it's worth my time, though. Modern gaming is taxing enough,
I just want to be able to load up Sonic 2 at the touch of a
button and get right into having fun.

actually, i work at a games store, and our release date for
the GC version of Zelda was pulled a month before the Wii
launched. I've heard you can only download the GC version in
Japan - waiting on a GC version is kind of iffy though.

I am about 45 hours into this game now, and have lost two
nights of sleep to it (not consecutive, thankfully.) it's
the best zelda i've played yet, and while it is darker than
other zeldas, it doesn't lose its classic Nintendo charm.

i also hate when they apply new ratings to retro games. i
would also give Sonic a 9, easily. People need to take into
context the time a game was made. Sonic was very fast for
its time, still is in some respects.
