in french
"gay" means "gay"
while
"gai" means "happy"
and it's the same prononciation
so i guess gays should be happy

saying something is gay doesn't mean you are homophobic.
i use it all the time (i should stop) and i'm not
homophobic.

its the internet, you can't really control what goes on
here, if the moderators start banning people for this, it'll
increase elsewhere. if you don't like what you read, don't
read.

Disagreeing with usage of the word is fine, but I would
*not* encourage the mods to take action. One of the reasons
I have always loved xlt is the (almost) complete lack of
censorship. Closed topics are usually closed because of
inanity, not profanity. Hey, that rhymed.

Well, 'gay' isn't profanity anyway I guess.

first of all, are you sure the "g" word is used at xlt with
serious intentions ? i mean people here have known here for
years now - and sometimes when they joke they don't use
smileys. so you might get confused.

have you been attacked personally at XLT for your sexual
preferences ? or one of your friends has ? why don't you
contact the staff about it ?

Someone was called "gay" and now the whole board is
homophobic ? Come on.

You're just saying that people should control themselves (in
a way that you've prescribed) or be controlled. Not
surprising.

I value honesty. If people were going to use distasteful
words, I'd rather they do it outright so I know they're
idiots, rather than artificially hide it for the sake of
appearances.

Well my friend who is gay doesn't get offended when I call
things gay. She does it herself in fact. I take that as
carte blanche to use the word :P

I think it's excusable in children who don't know better,
but there's nothing so vulgar as some stroppy youth or older
decrying something as "gay" or "faggy". It's a recourse of
the infantile, and harping on saying the word gay has
nothing to do with homosexuality is disingenuous at best.

That said, I wouldn't stop anyone saying it as, it's
internets, people generally talk rubbish, I say awful things
myself, I've probably aggressively questioned my friends
sexuality a thousand times ... but it's not a word I'd use
freely as a derogatory term in a public forum.

I'm not bothered, I'm not gay, no honestly I'm not. I'm not,
SHUT UP RIGHT!?!? I'm sure most people who use the term
"gay" in such a way use it "innocently", but it's meaning,
surely, stems from a derogatory view of homosexual men being
weak, freakish, ineffective. I'm not making a big case for
it either way as the word's already entered our language,
your average gay person probably doesn't think of it as
being any more offensive than using the word retard or
spakker, I don't find it offensive just lazy and juvenile in
a not very funny way, but to suggest the word, when used in
the way discussed in this thread, is entirely divorced from
negative noitions of homosexuality is, to me, simply not
true.
