I've never found BoC to be very satisfying as background music. in the background, I only pick up the "nice" layers, which on their own would bore me.
But as a foundation for the subtleties these layers seem wisely crafted to me. And I only appreciate the subtleties when I take the time to really listen and let the music seep into me. Does me quite good where it counts :) Further, the elements of many of their compositions which I had once perceived to be subtle have become powerful and forward after I've become more familiar with it.
I liken this to many types of music or artists whose songs are said to all sound the same according to non-fans. My mother doesn't hear a difference between Bjork's Vespertine and Debut. It's just that weird, annoying style of music to her... overlayed with that aweful voice. Likewise, I used to think all orchestral music and all classical and romantic music sounded pretty much the same. Since then I've come to appreciate the diversity that lies in the "subtleties."
Granted, BoC's latest sounds quite familiar on the surface. The flesh seems fresh to me though.

Hey bob, I'd like to suggest something, though I don't assume you haven't already thought of it.
Music which we must "work" to "get" can be good for a person, imho--perhaps only if, after repeat listens, it eventually becomes an effortless experience to enjoy the music. Most of my favorite music doesn't stick to me until repeat listens, either because it was just plain boring to me, or, in the case of autechre, it seemed too random at first, lacking moving patterns, deep intentional structure, and movement or evolution through time, from the beginning to the end of the composition.

i'm listening to chromakey dreamcoat now. everyone who says this track is bad is obviously gay and can't appreciate true art and the years BOC put in this album.

yeah, I've really enjoyed this album since I bought it. It definitely does grow on you very slowly. It's been great company on my mp3 player for long walks on the beach when i was down south - very fitting :)
What are your thoughts about the unfolding digipak design of this album?

they seem to like those sorts of covers - ive got MHTRTC like that, and a big limited edition foldy booky thing for Geogaddi. It gives them more room for artwork, i suppose.

I'm listening to it right now. I've probably been through the album about 2 or 3 times completely. I have mixed feelings no doubt.
I'm comfortable with most of the melodies and textures, but I absolutely can't handle the guitars (with the exception of Chromakey Dreamcoat - they fit perfectly on that song). The use of guitars on Hey Saturday Sun really sound popish and out of place. Part of BOCs early qualities pertained to their use of non-organic sounds.
Similarly, with a few exceptions, the drum programming is rather straight forward. On tracks like Hey Saturday Sun (again), the percussion sounds like a bloody sample of some Moby track from his Play album. Hell, when you turn it down, and only pay attention to the percussion on that track, it sounds like a Back Street Boy song - no $hit.
I'm going to go through it again, and maybe I'll warm up to it.

It's getting better with repeated listens. Rather strange, but after reading the interview with BOC at pitchfork, it seems to suddenly make a whole lot of sense.
Considering their intentions, it certainly has hit the mark. My expectations of another Geogaddi may have been clouding my judgement.
Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful album, just not quite the mindf@#k that I'm used to.
