What would be the circumstances for you to take another
persons life? I know a lot of you are gonna say "I would
never kill another person" and to that I say "pushover". For
the rest of us, give some scenarios of possibly horrible
situations where you would be pushed over the edge to do
something so terrible. I know, I'm morbid. Sue me.

If someone deliberately took the life of a loved one of
mine, I would end them.

If someone was attempting to take my own life and/or the
lives of my loved ones, I would also end them.

Zephyr - same here

Scenario where I wouldn't kill someone: If they
raped my girlfriend, I would tie them down and pull their
balls off with a pair of pliers, making sure to tourniquet
the wound so they manage to live and walk the earth for the
rest of their pitiful lives with no genitals. I pity the
fool who rapes my girlfriend.

only acceptable if your life is certainly in lethal danger.

lolz, what do you think the 'terrorists' are doing? They are
getting revenge for us building military bases on their holy
land.

Now I know this sounds totally generic american: but what if
your freedom was in danger. I'm not talking about 'the
freedom to drive your SUV to your 40hr week job so you can
pay your taxes', but the real freedoms that matter, like the
freedom to think and say what you want. Would you kill to
keep your humanity or would you just blow it off because its
not a matter of life and death?

good way of putting it. I probably would, but it would
depend greatly on the circumstances.

sad thing is, many americans, including the soldiers
themselves, think their own who are stationed in Iraq and
Afghanistan are fighting for their freedom, and the freedom
of the people of those countries.

but i'm not trying to get this to get sidetracked into
iraq/afghanistan/america debate.

the reason i slipped in the snide hi america remark is that
i detest your gun laws, the fact that there are so many guns
in your society, and the fact that americans, like yourself,
consider murder a viable option to solving some problems,
and getting revenge.

Redrum, I'm curious. How would you describe the situation in
Ireland? Isn't there a constant confilict between Catholics
and Protastants there? Or is that old news?

The conflict between Catholics and Protestants is primarily
confined to Northern Ireland which is a territory belonging
to the United Kingdom. Trouble sometimes occurs in Dublin
but even in the north there isn't as much trouble as there
used to be. The recent bombings of London hit the younger
generation harder than people my age and above because as we
were growing up terrorist bombings of London where a common
occurence. In fact the terrorist IRA factions enjoyed the
support of the US government until Bill Clinton cut ties and
support.

You're right, there are too many guns, but on the other hand
I'm glad we're still allowed to have guns because it
reflects an important principle that our forefathers
instated, which is [paraphrase] The people can take the law
into their own hands if their own govt gets out of control.
A sort of 'policing the policemen' deal. Yes we have too
many gun murders, but that's because people forgot who the
real enemy is, its not our neighbors, its our leaders. Its
the ones in power who threaten our lives the most and US
citizens dont realize that, their world view is limited to
the town they live in. Back in the day, people would revolt
and cut off their kings head if they didn't like him,
nowadays every is a fucking sheep that just follows the
herder and does whatever he says, so they need a new enemy,
which usually ends up being those nearest to our homes.

i would probably not kill in self-defense, but i might kill
if it was the only way to protect someone who is responsible
for *many* lives, like a very wise judge or an archon. in
most cases, i don't think i'd have enough information to
decide something as important as another person's mortality.
i don't think that life is very important; nothing is.
life is just another addiction.

I'd kill to save my mum's and my brother's life, even if it
meant a life sentence. I've come close to a confrontation
before:

true story: we were passing past an enclosed resisdential
area; me my dad and my brother in the car had just come back
from shopping for food and bits 'n' bobs; my dad decided to
get out and cut some rocket leaves growing by a green patch
in a communal car park (to complement our salad that
evening). Some chavlings (ranging from about their mid-teens
and upwards) started harrasing my dad, they went away and
came back with some hey duty grass cutters (the ones with
long handles and blades) my dad started telling them he'd
smack them if they didn't leave him alone, meanwhile this
was happening I was shitting myself and ripping the
packaging off the kitchen knife my dad had bought.

{my heart is racing as I type just by remembering}

Luckily it turned out to be an anticlimax and the chavs went
away, the fact remains I was pumped and ready to do the most
henious of crimes.

It's what happens when you apply Zephyr's oh-so-eloquently
worded idea that "If someone deliberately took the life of a
loved one of mine, I would end them. "

The trouble up north, since the mid to late nineties has
been really nothing to do with a struggle for independence /
fight against those struggling for independence. The
paramilitaries are basically just ruthless criminal gangs
who deal drugs, organise prostitution and huge music and dvd
counterfeit operations but who also have their roots in the
struggle for independence and sectarianism.

I have no respect for the Provos or the loyalists. The old
IRA are a different story. They had a reason to fight and
kill -- our whole country was part of the british empire,
and we had a long history of being treated like shite
(Cromwell, the Penal Laws, etc), and anyhow, they weren't
terrorists, they were an illegal army. The guys of recent
times are just fucking thugs.

There's been trouble recently (tonight) because the
marching season has begun and there've been clashes between
nationalists and loyalists, as usual.

how is writing "many americans" the same as writing
"hundreds of thousands"?

Fox News is the most popular tv station over there though.
With people believing the bullshit and propaganda that's
piped through that, I would estimate the number of people
who are of that opinion quite high. In the millions as
opposed to hundreds of thousands.

And I know there's a huge anti-war effort over there, which
is growing lately since people are waking up from their
ignorance, but c'mon.. So many people believe this totally
false shit that's being construed as patriotism.

Grand. Same shit applies, only my argument is even
stronger:
The vast majority of the people serving over there are very
young and come from poor backgrounds, i can't imagine very
many of them have a huge interest in politics, but I can
imagine the vast majority of them thinking what they're
doing is right and they're there for the right reason. They
come from the sort of families that would love Fox News.

Jesus, no.

The only people with guns are farmers, and they're only
allowed have shotguns, I think, for killing vermin. The gun
laws are very strictly enforced.

One thing that shocks most Americans is that the police
here don't carry guns.

There's a special Armed Unit of the police for that, ie if
someone with access to a gun goes a little crazy and takes a
member of their family hostage -- that's happened once or
twice.

However armed crime is on the rise thanks to the
paramilitaries up north selling their guns to gangs down
here in Limerick and Dublin.
