I just think they have always dared to go with the kind of
electronica that no other label would. They deal with
artists that are awkward yet very talented and thus a lot of
the music is a gamble - how much of Warp's catalogue is
accessible really? Take Drukqs for example.

you can't generalise the entier genre and all the fans..im
not sure what sort of fans attend idm gigs overthere, but
here and good part of europe i always meet same people - no
matter whether it's electronica, indie rock, punk rock,
jazz,...as long as it's good.

exaph, well, 15 years ago lfo and now were something totally
different and new, but nowdays warp is surely the most
accessible/mainstream electronica label around..which is
only normal really.

The rediculous thing is that dispite your new found
'maturity' you are talking about IDM geeks in the same way
IDM geeks talk about other genre's. You have simply had a
change in listening taste and you seem to think you have
bettered yourself as a result. Quite frankly that just
proves you haven't changed at all. You are still the type
of person you claim to hate.

Christ, I hate this attitude where you're not allowed to
dislike anything that is not electronic or is popular
without being called pompous and "omg u only hate it
because it is guitar music/popular u r so narrow minded"

- it is possible to dislike this kind of shit simply because
it is completely fucking dull and has been done a million
times before, not because you're trying to look clever or
because it doesn't fit in with some "experimental
electronic" idea that you have - just because it's absolute
wank. Maximo Park are shit, nice one Warp, sign the Kaiser
Franz Razorlight Athelete Chiefs next please.

Now I listen to both rock music and electronic music (as Im
sure many/most people here do) and when I heard Warp had
signed a guitar-pop band from the North East I thought wow
if people with such good taste as Warp like this band I
probably will.

But when I first heard the music, I really disliked it. In
short it reminded me of many groups I have seen in various
pubs throughout the years producing jangly skewed guitar
riffs fronted by a sensitive Morrissey type with impossible
hair. There is nothing for me there, Ive heard it before, it
does not excite me, it does not engage me in any way. But if
many people like this genre and style of music, more power
to them and I wish Maximo Park well.

However I am worried that Warp might do a Tony Blair on us,
abandoning its roots in order to diversify and survive, but
then 5 years later we might have 20 guitar pop bands on Warp
and nobody to put out groundbreaking dance music. Still if
Warp does go RIP, there'll always be something else to take
its place.

I heard 'apply some pressure' on the radio and didn't really
like it. It didn't stand out to me really, and I was
suprised to read all this hear.. that they are signed to
warp. What warp really aughtta do instead of staying with
entirely electronic acts, or signing straight-up 'rock' acts
is to sign some stuff that doesn't fit into one clear genre.
..Stuff that might have vocals or guitars, but still pushes
the envelope in some regard, in terms of production,
instrumentation, etc. But I guess if they were to do such a
thing all the fanboys would revolt, saying that they are
tainting their music with quasi-experimental
numbskull rock 'n' roll. But I think different styles could
coexist on the label peacefully, as long as the acts that
are signed won't be embarassing a few years later when the
fashionablity runs out.

im in agreement with horsefactory

i like guitars and i like pop. but this doesnt help maximo
park. theres absolutely nothing, at all, that differentiates
them from any other random guitar pop group on the face of
the planet. so why should i care? it just sounds like
everything else. electronica has this problem too, im not
picking sides. but just becuase i think maximo park sucks
doesnt mean i dont think jimmy edgar sucks. because he
does.

theres nothing wrong with guitars or guitarish pop. its just
that maximo park is a fucking crock.

In the end who cares? Why do people defend labels? Who
cares? I feel that horsefactory had a good post.

I barely even listen to electronic music anymore.

No matter what genre you are into you will find these little
quabbles amongst fans. I know people that love jazz that are
real stuck up about the music and i know people into metal
that argue about which metallica album is better.

Music isnt the only thing with fanboyism either. You can go
with Movie Buffs, People who read books, any one who follows
any sport.... blah blah blah.

Dont give me this "electronic blah blah blah" and "IDM blah
blah forums blah blah"

OPEN YOUR EYES TO THE WORLD AROUND YOU.

Warp are good! ofcourse they make mistakes in YOUR opinion.
I think they just sign/release music they like. There's no
massive marketing strategy to keep electronica afloat or a
switch to average Iggy/ESG influenced pop. It's like
everyone is 65 and wishes it was like it used to be in the
good old days.

offline dog_belch from Netherlands, The on 2005-05-16 19:03 [#01601582]

I don't even think the people moaning want the good old
days, they want such a narrow band of releases from a couple
of years in the late 90s and take that as representative of
the label. I don't think a fraction of the people moaning
about Warp take in the whole story.
