those warp quilts are pretty interesting actually.

it would be cool if discogs.com or something had a feature
that could build images like that from album covers. you
could choose a time period, or a record label, or an artist,
hit submit, and voila.

Wtf. You must be smoking crack 24/7.

FUCK!!! THEY AREN"T INSISTING ON RELEASING FUCKING DEAD END
DRILLNBASS ELECTRONIC MUSIC LIKE SQUAREPUSHER ANYMORE!!!!
THEY MUST BE LOOSING THEIR FUCKING TOUCH!!! I REFUSE TO BUY
ANYTHING FROM THEM ANYMORE BECAUSE I NEED TO ONLY LISTEN TO
ONE FUCKING KIND OF MUSIC. EVEN IF THE LABEL DOESN'T ONLY
RELEASE WHAT I WANT, I AM STILL GOING TO HATE WARP BECAUSE I
CHOOSE TO LISTEN TO WHAT THAT DIPSHIT RICHARD D JAMES HAS TO
SAY WITHOUT THINKING ON MY OWN.

Jesus. The world is moving on.

Well we sort of settled this but I still think the whole
'FUCK! Franz Ferdinand = Maximo Park!!!!!" really childish
and irrelevant... the point is if you liked that kind of
music (A) you wouldn't complain and (B) you would be able to
appreciate the difference.

in 10 years or so.

There has been some quality stuff released over the past
couple of years on Warp that has been completely slept
on...I dearly love the Harmonic 33 album, which I know a lot
of other people don't really like. They release what they
like, always have done, it's what makes Warp Warp, plus
unlike a lot of labels you are free to listen to everything
legally before you buy courtesy of Bleep.

I really wonder if this kind of reaction appeared when they
released the first Broadcast album - there's some
electronica there, but they're still a band.

Its interesting that you said this because the thought had
crossed my mind before. It makes sense if they want to be
more productive as a label. Its not like the small IDM
community can keep them afloat forever.

I share your opinion but i really dont count because as i
stated before I really dont listen to alot of electronic
music anymore.

Everyone has an opinion and I think that people don't like
to have their belief system, the one that gives them the
most comfort, threatened.

So electronica as a genre is dead. that is what you are
saying isn't it?. might be right. i hope not. autechre and
shit like that is going up it's own ass - i admit. but i
can't believe electronica has ran out of ideas. maximo park
stink of stale pish and that is a fact.

the hundreds of smaller idm labels out there seem to be
doing ok as they are.

manicminer- idm run out of steam? rock has been going on for
ages, heck classical music has been around for hundreds of
years, and there are still new classical albums being made.
surely idm, imo the most diverse 'genre' of all (utilizing,
potentially, every type of instrument, including electronic)
can go on for longer than 10 years...

artists are just afraid to try new thngs when they can make
more money for churning out same old 'tried and tested'
idm...or if they are especially money hungry, indie.

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2005-05-18 04:31 [#01603203]

well, i agree that atm there are rock bands that are much
more adventurous and interesting than any idm artist, but i
still have high hopes for the new aphex twin album, he will
save the electronic music again!

this may sound silly (ignorant? elitist?) but ive always
thought of idm as being the 'last genre', as being defined
as making music that is different totally to all other types
of music...and if idm stagnates, there wont be any ground
breaking music *ever again*

you should check out bands like gang gang dance, excepter,
black dice, deerhoof, lightning bolt to get an idea how rock
music is proceding and why it's ahead of idm already.

Warp hasn't been innovative in years. At least they aren't
trying to revive IDM or anything. Fuck this place is a
brainsore sometimes.

Most of the people who were listening to warp when it was
still 'making waves' and pursuing new ideas don't even
listen to IDM anymore (and a lot of people seem embarassed
about it). IDM was dead as a usefull genre before drukqs
came out. Most people here nowadays got into aphex twin with
drukqs, or just before it, so don't go around predicting the
demise of anything, when you finally jumped onto the tail
end of a fashionable genre.

Some people love music for what it is. Other people choose
it like a shirt.

imo genres dont 'go out of fashion', its like saying 'no one
likes comedy anymore, the new in thing is action/adventure'
or whatever. every record i loved when i bought it, i still
love today (regardless of its genre). and i will continue to
listen to idm long after warp becomes an all-indie label.

- i dont love idm for its newness or 'ground-breakingness',
i love it for the way it sounds.

WTF are you talking about they don't go out of fashion? They
go in and out of fashion all the time!

If you need examples, I might as well just hand you a gun.
Not fun surviving as a vegetable.

(warps about as ready to go all indie now, as they were to
go all rap when they released prefuse)
