i think a better question would be.. when have humans
started expressing themselves in ways other than the primal
needs such as hunger, reproduction and surviving.

i read newman's ('who's afraid of red yellow and blue')
essay ' the first man was an artist' "crying out 'why am i
here'" his first concern would be making art about it

haha!

...well, i think there were probably animals expressing
themselves in a way that they found aesthetically pleasing
before there were humans.

but, i've never really read anything about that that i
remember, so i have no way to back up my claims.

The first evedence of art is when men started to decorate
their tools as a sign of ownership.

Music is more dificult to track down but the consensus
amoung academics was that singing and rythmic group
shouting/chanting, was more than likley the first music as
it appears in every culture and that it does not require any
instrementation.

I reckon the first art was poo-poo. When i do a poo poo I
look at it and go, "wow, what a nice shape I have created".

I'm sure cave men did the same.

sorry nacmat but this is a terrible idea for a thread.

it leads to awful questions as 'what is art'

when did craftmanship become art? when people found man to
be important.

the first paintings weren't works of art, they were
assignments. later they became art.

it's impossible to say 'that day in history is when art
began'

no it's not. nobody has an answer. nobody will ever have
one. it's pointless.

a good idea for a thread is: the last art to appear?

i think its a great thread to start with. For me i think the
answer to nacmat's question "which was the first art to be
developed by humans" is: sex.

The first art to appear, was architecture. Before men
thought about other forms, they had to 1) find food and 2)
find a shelter. Since finding food ain't much of an art,
finding a shelter means to create/model/change objects found
on our planet earth to suit their needs. Volume,
composition, textures, etc..

Therefore, the art of architecture was created first.

it was not intended to be a great thread... I was just
talking about that with my girlfriend the other day, so I
htought I would talk about it here, as it lead us to good
discussion (me and her)... and to be honest I think some
interesting things were said here too

but maybe its pointless as you say... well, no big deal

art is as much if not more dependant on our perception of it
as it is on the medium... i'd guess that art has been around
for as long as there has been consciousness, in fact, maybe
art is what constitutes consciousness... i dunno, just a
thought, anyhow...

i saw a tv programme not long back where they showed the
first ever piece or recorded 'art'. it was just simple criss
cross lines carved in a stone, it was reckoned to be about
60000 years old i think they said, though i could be way
off, my memory ain't too good.

but men, first sang or made some rythm, lets say to
intimidate or celebrate... oor first painted some thing in
their bodies or objects to express propertie?

id said the first form of abstractness and expressing the
individuality of the human being was writing... but i just
dont know... was tribal rythms or cave painting art? i dont
think so...

i dunno about that man... written language is a lot less
intuitive than representational art... the earliest texts
are definitely precluded by the spoken folk-tales they were
adapted from... that said, in terms of what we consider art
(medium-wise... and again, i don't really know if i agree
with that) now, storytelling certainly may have been among
the first
