This thread is good PR fo Tycho. I never knew about such
music trademark, before I saw this thread. Now I do know
that. Now I have heard music from Tychos site, looked
through his photos, logos, print works and so on.

His music is nice. Well, if it is to some extent like Boards
of Canada - this is no problem, it's good, because BoC don't
release any new music. So these fine folks, who express
themselves in such music style - they are doing nice job.

Boards of Canada seem to have mega-great influence on US.
Even here in Ukraine I am aware of three trademarks who are
said to be BoC-like. All three are located on US territory.
Tendence (trend)?

I haven't got a problem with somebody being BoC-like; it
would be nice though if said artist admitted to it, and
didn't try to hide this fact. I'm still a little pissed
with things such as the forum posts where somebody asked
tycho where he got his inspiration from, and BoC wasn't even
mentioned; ad nauseam.

And tycho's easily the closest I've heard to BoC; that's not
nessecarily a bad thing either - like I said in my original
posts, 10/10 for replicating the sound. I've never heard of
Kelpe before, but from the samples on their website, I can
hear that they've been BoC influenced but they've definitely
got their own style.

I'd probably believe tycho if he said he didn't intend for
the album to come out sounding very much the same, but the
end result is that it does. I should have a listen to some
of his earlier albums; maybe (hopefully) there's more of a
unique style.

I've spent too much fucking time rattling on about this
topic, anyway.

Actually, on listening to the first song on the album
(sunrise projector), I take this back; jesus it's fucking
modelled completely from BoC's structure, sample types,
effects, melodies, everything.

Either way, I am enjoying the album, so whatever.

Clone or not clone, whatever Tycho is guilty of, he sure as
hell got a lot of promotion from this thread, and he seems
to have sold a few cd's off it.

see, i'd almost argue being involved heavily with marketing
that he'd probably be even /more/ famous and successful if
he never mentioned boc and people thought he really did have
a unique sound and feel.

maybe that's what's bothering me. shrug. i hope he does
the right thing, though; he's talented, that's for sure.
i'd just love to see that talent break the envelope instead
of purely 'cloning'.

Yeah, I see what you mean, but his sound is way to similar
for his 'influence' to be kept a secret. He has talent,
atleast for recreating, but I hope for his sake that he
draws some wisdom from this incident and spend some time
trying to find a unique style.

effect at all? :D

Kelpe did a real good job with that cd.

Word up.

i'm hooked on that track, and "nat's twirly mug". i
particulary like the tracks with samples suggesting that
life is rather pointless.

cheers, tycho - this is a great album, thanks for the
suggestion.

classic thread bump.

the saddest part of all is, tycho has probably made more
money from this sound than boc themselves, simply because he
tours and plays live a lot. he even has close a 1,000,000
listens on last.fm - just goes to show how desperate some
people are for a fill in the musical void between boc
albums.

somma this.

it's really bad.

even if it wasn't plagiarizing boc, it's really bad..
can clearly hear the boc synths, but lacks all the soul of
boc, all the mood.
boc grew up with this stuff, they molded and created the
sound themselves, it came from them, it's their sound.. why
would anyone want to create cheap ripoff synths that sound
alike them..

either way, i feel this sunrise projector album is a lot
more shallow than boc, it doesnt feel 'real' like boc does,
no mystery either..

another artist off.

I bought the Cilocub CD as well, some great stuff on it.

More free BoC influenced acts:
Flutterspot - Suitable for a Desire to Share
Redpoint - Protect and Serve (Side a /
Side b)
Hills West - Step into the Outside
Sarin Sunday - The Lonely Hike
Saturday Index - Partly Cloudy

How's that? I've read this a few times from you; you seem to
have it in for me.

Is this still the 'Oh, he used 'chre' on the end of his name
so he must be an autechre clone' thing, that I read from
you? 'Ochre' is a real word, and in my case comes from from
'Oaker' Avenue, where I grew up. No link with any artist
there. I chose the colour spelling as I preferred the way it
looked in print.

I'm fed up with reading your defamatory remarks about me.

I actually like some of your music, have seen you play live
and bought a CD by yourself. Have I said you're music
is shit?

Unfortunately for me the name 'ochre' suggests you
want to be like another artist, sorry if that upsets you.

Comparing Ochre to Tycho is rediculous. Tycho is BOC with
downs syndrome. Although Ochre has a distinct IDM-sound, I
can't really hear what artist he is ripping off. Ochre makes
excellent melodies, and I'm listening to A Midsummer Nice
Dream over and over again. I downloaded sunrise projector
and listened to it again because Impakt recommended it, and
it's still shit. I would rather be tied to a chair and
tortured with Drunken Mastah B-sides and rarities. I kid you
not!

"Unfortunately for me the name 'ochre' suggests you
want to be like another artist, sorry if that upsets you."

Ooooh. Come ooon!

I just don't understand why, after an explanation why I
chose the name, you still wouldn't be able to look past the
similarity of five letters.

It just seems like a lot of effort to repeatedly slate me in
such a way, that I wonder if I've offended you in the past
somehow (if so then it was unintentional, and I apologise).

Perhaps a name change is in order anyway; I never intended
to keep this name (much less be writing music) for so long.

i gave it a try but it annoys me to no end whenever someone
uses the 'wobbly pitch shift trick' throughout the entire
track, and not in a very subtle way either.

i'm on track 3 now and this must be the most shameless
Campfire Headphase duplicate ever. cringeworthy.

i must admit, i never once connected the name ochre to
autechre. the music doesn't sound anything alike either.

look at boards of canada. they named themselves after the
film boards of canada and outright mimic the sound from
those documentaries. which is the more shameless? ;)

I'm just saying: you can't like BOC and at the same time NOT
like Tycho, it's too close sounding. I get that you don't
want to like it, it feels cheap yadda yadda.

But if you were blind and someone told you they put on the
newest BOC album, but it was in fact Tycho; you would think
it was BOC and you would probably like it.
