Hello-

Just was made aware of this thread....perhaps a bit late to
reply to all of this, as the moment has probably passed for
most here, but....

If you read any of the interviews I have done, or read any
of the many lists of influences I have posted throughout my
site and on many others, you will find that I make no
attempt whatsoever to hide my love of BOC and what they have
done for electronic music. However, if you were to honestly
listen to the entire I album, you would see that it differs
very greatly from BOC in many ways. True, it maintains the
whole lofi, beat-driven, melodic asthetic...but this is a
major movement in electronic music, you can't just ascribe
it's origins to BOC and then say "Hands of
everyone!"....well, I guess you can, on a message board
somewhere.
So yes, of course I am influenced by BOC, but I am also
influenced by the likes of Ulrich Schnauss and Fourtet, but
by no means have I made any attempt to rip anyone off.
Say all you want about the music I suppose, I am no
professional musician. I make music in my *very* spare time
while paying the bills as a graphic designer. So for anyone
to say that my album artwork is derivative of BOC is
foolish. I have been a designer for longer than those
fellows have been on the map over here in the states (been
in it for 8 years now) . My work has been all over the
world, on the covers of many an album and many a magazine
cover. I have my own style...

So that's my reply, go ahead and flame the fuck out of me,
but also, thanks to everyone who had kind words to say, I
appreciate the support....

Oh yeah, last thing: Yes, of course I removed some posts
from my message board... how stupid of me would it be to
personally host the beligerant ramblings and massive photos
that have been posted there of late? Isn't that the job of
XLTronic?
Thanks

plaster: no problem, nice to clear things up. I have
endless respect for BOC, but I don't want to be seen as a
clone...and I think you will find that a single listen
through of the album (NOT just the 30 second samples on the
site) will show it's far from a cloning.

BROKENPHONES: I would say just scrounge around on google,
that's how I did it. I also got the Illustrator WOW! book,
that helped a lot. But the real key is just pushing
yourself and every time you hit a roadblock, something you
are confused about, just google it, learn it, and then keep
going until you hit something again, until you stop hitting
things....
thanks

well, inice to see that your, how you said, free time hobby
turned into CD sellin. i wish i could do that one day.

anyway, its obvious youve been treated as a BoC clone. no
matter why, coz it really doesnt matter now. at least not
here. what i think , is that every bit of criticism, even
when you think its worthless, should bring you to
consideration " what happend " and "why they say things like
this". this , of course is very personal, so as the things
you will do after whole mess about clones, BoC and stuff.

if your music is founded good - its ok, but be vary that
everywhere are ppl that will think that your music is shit.
no matter what will you do, and how.

therefore, i wouldt worry about whole topic, here ppl think
that youre clone. world doesnt end here, does it ?

tycho: to me, and a lot of others familiar with boc, the
lines really are blurred between them and your own identity.
there's no doubt you're talented; especially if you say you
even do your own artwork, but it is very heavily boc
influenced to the point where it almost /is/ boc. i can
understand working as hard as you have to get where you are,
perhaps you're taking offense to this and instantly are
defensive, but it isn't just me that draws these parallels.
do yourself a favour, and for your next album try and break
truly into a unique sound and feel; evidently you're very
capable of doing so. i think we can all see that you admire
boc for what they've done; you've shaped your creations
into them.

i did a little experiment today; my girlfriend isn't hugely
into idm but is somewhat familiar with some of the artists
because i play it quite often. i put tycho's album, and
didn't say anything; normally she doesn't comment on music,
or just changes it to the radio. she said she quite liked
it.

although this music sounds somewhat simular to boc in terms
of structure and even melody, it has much more of an
"instant like" appeal than boc; boc i tend to find become
far more enjoyable with more listens, although there's some
depth boc have which i haven't heard yet in your music.

play your cards right dude, and i think you'll probably be
quite successful; the only thing i'd like to see is you give
credit where credit is due. you have borrowed incredibly
heavily from boc, although you do introduce some new
elements; i and others here would really appreciate it if
you acknowledged this publically and not in obscure
interviews or wherever you claim to have done it.

i've found myself listening to your album a bit, too, i must
admit. the samples on your site really don't give it
credit; my first impression certainly wasn't correct.

it was up on (the old) mp3.com. I loved it. i mean i love

different. And your new studio looks fookin amazing.

I also read your interview with computer arts, your designs
are so good. Do you use the same Comp for art and music?

Dear BOC,

This is what happens when you don't release a record for
years, the people get depserate and start making their own
BOC tracks. If you don't release an album soon people will
forget you, and then when you do eventually return they'll
say that you're influenced by Tychoo, and then where will we
be, eh? Eh?

wow, I stumbled to this thread and I can't believe some of
the stuff I've read. I checked out the site and I gotta say
the tunes are pretty well done. If u can put the BOC
references/similarities in the back of your head (no doubt a
hard task for some of the dedicated BOC fans on here) then
there's some real nice ambience for the ears and mind,

my two cents

i don't know. i'd like to do that, and i've tried, but
everything just screams BOC - from the artwork, to the song
tracks, to the way songs are structured and the kind of
samples/the way they're placed.

given, there are some songs on the album that do start to
stray into a different style, but they're not anywhere near
as good.

someone tried to make BoC tracks, but failed and made

i think it's a bit far to say that his artwork is influenced
by boc. he is a designer and has been doing this for at
least 8 years. this is his own style.

my first impression of this record was that it was very
boc-like indeed but like tycho says himself it has so many
things that aren't boc-like. i've heard many other "clones"
that sound like boc but like someone said the didn't invent
the genre or style. some of his tracks are very upbeat,
which i don't see in many boc tracks for example. i got the
record from emusic and listened to it through and the
samples don't show the whole picture of course. i also got
"the science of patterns EP" and it sounded good as well.

if i were making music it would probably be boc-like too,
because i used to listen to them much, but probably with a
touch of glitch or something.

i think everything plays its role in making this release
look boc-like, the track titles, the feel of the songs and
like some says, the artwork (which too me isn't that
boc-like really, looks very cool by the way), the childrens
laughter and other samples.

so, scott, as some people said above, criticism can
sometimes hurt although it might be coming from people you
don't give a fuck about, but most of the time there's always
a grain of truth in what people are saying. i've said some
things before about your stuff that i mightn't have thought
through well enough when i come to think about it.

and yeah, boc is one of my favourite bands but they're no
gods like some people like to claim.

My favourite bit on the website is a logo that says
Tychoosim. Which is a bit like Twoism but obviously with
loads of other influences so it's not fair to say it's just
another example of ripping of BOC. At all.

Fair enough.... I appreciate the comments... just like any
other artist, I have been evolving since the sessions that
ended up as sunrise projector (2003-2004) and the new
material I have been writing is a definite departure from
the album.
I guess I just wanted to make the point that I have never
set out to take what belonged to someone else and pass it
off as my own. If some here feel that is what I have done,
I am sorry for insulting your sensibilities.

for the record though:

DOG_BELCH: the logo on the website says "Tychomusic" with
music backwards, not "Tychoism"....

and the samples of children are me and my brother as kids,
they're tapes I have that I've used pieces of in all my
music since I started out.

stilaktive: thanks...yeah, I use the same PC for all my
work.

so thanks to everyone, it's been interesting to get so many
perspectives and feedback on the record.

oh yeah, one other thing: I read somewhere in these forums
about another artist called "Kelpe" who people were saying
was like BOC... either way, this album is fucking great:
