i would surely have got shocked if this happened to me too,
very deceived also i guess.

now, i certainly wouldn't like being a rock star (or even an
idm star) and have to deal with lots of fans. must get on
your nerves, even if it's just for small things and asked
politely (i know in the morning, or whenever i'm at my
computer, when someone enters my room and even just talks to
me it annoys me...) - and if you react badly, like he did,
it's not only between you and the fan, lots of people get
aware of it and it makes you a bad reputation... maybe Tom
is asocial, maybe he's an asshole, maybe he was just
nervous, maybe he is versatile - i don't know. can't tell
with just one story.

i really feel sorry for you pomme = /
but maybe he was just nervous or in a bad mood or
something.

i haven't read any Tom Jenkinson interview yet... i've read
a few Autechre ones and they seemed cold and antipathetic...
i know the people from Godspeed You Black Emperor aren't
very nice either...

judging from interviews, the Autechre and Godspeed You Black

I was gonna put something about that in my post but
unfortunately I wasn't aware of this at the time, having
skipped through the entire thread to make the wisecrack.
Thank you for the information.

just because you appreciate someone's art doesn't mean they
are obliged to be nice to you, or even speak to you.
and just because he's famous doesn't mean he likes strangers
coming up to him. if you weren't famous and you didn't like
it that wouldn't change if you became famous

he's not making music for the benefit of the fans...so he
doesn't owe you anything

offline morge from United Kingdom on 2004-04-27 12:31 [#01162876]

no he doesn't.

we buy his cds or we don't buy his cds. i don't think he
sits at home worrying whether anyone will "dig" the
intricate moments of ultravisitor or whatever.

the nature of his music is such that its really personal to
him, if someone else appreciates it that's lucky.
but it doesn't oblige him to that person

i'm not saying what he did was excusable
and of course it was stupid, cos you are putting a customer
off

im just saying people shouldn't be outraged by it, or assume
he must've been on acid

Autechre are pretty nice actually. Considering I walked up
to them and drilled them on what software they used. Typical
fanboy that I am. Should have been shit on immediately, but
the were suprisingly very kind. Beautifuly delicate accents,
too. There tour bus was shit, though. Looked like a garbage
truck.

» i can totally understand that tom would probably
want some time to himself before a show, especially on a
long tour where he's been on the road a lot.

» i also understand that everyone has their bad
moods. i'm sure there've been times when i was on edge
enough to push some poor schmoe down for little reason.

» i also understand that tom has no contractual
obligation to be kind to every fan wanting to be seen with
him.

» i also understand that he may very well get very
nervous before shows, and that he may not act like himself
during that time.

... but, i think it should be understood that when touring
as an artist you will make the vast majority of your money
from people who REALLY like you & your work. and, if you're
planing on being in close proximity to them (drinking at the
public bar), there's a good chance one of these people, who
look up to you, will approach you.

if you can't deal with those people civilly then i think you
should reasses your decision to tour publicly... or at the
very least, hang out in their midst before a show.

I had tickets to see Squarepusher recently in Liverpool with
the London Sinfonietta but couldn't go because I had to act
in 3 plays that night.

I've met Aphex at a gig, had a chat and cos I was so nervous
and didn't want to ask typical fanboy questions I just said:
"I'll talk to you later then." and didn't.

But he let me take a photo of him and this bird, then the
girl took a photo of me and him, and he put his arm around
me.

Don't think Tom would have done that judging by this
thread.

But I can't judge somebody by one incident.
