Super High Me - 3/5 It's not all that informative or funny, it just goes down easy like the clearest of vape hits. A worthwhile waste of however long this documentary was.
Lars and The Real Girl - 2.5 A man falls in love with a "Real Doll" sex toy and then the town falls in love with everything! A slick sludge of gentle manipulation, but it's something you could take a real date to. I felt a little happy afterwards; a real plastic affair.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - 5/5 This movie was slick in the best way possible and a joy to look at. It's the best new movie I've experienced in a long time.

I'm Not There
1/5
The only reason i wouldn't give it a zero is because of the entertaining ability Cate Blanchett had to look and talk exactly like Dylan.
Otherwise that "abstract expressionist" director should be slapped.
Sorry i thought Christian Bale, Richard Geere, and Heath Ledger were horrible as a "Dylan personality"
I don't understand how the Critics liked it as much as they did

Joint Security Area 4.5/5
I'm sure you've heard this before but Korea has made so many amazing films in the last fer years and this is one of the best of them from the Oldboy director. I hadn't even heard of the Joint Security Area in Korea before!

JSA is a great film, indeed, although not Park Chan-Wook's best (which, for me, is the whole revenge trilogy of which Oldboy is the second, and IMO weakest, part).
I just saw another film.
The Onion Movie - 6/10
Not that great at all, but a few real laughs.

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance comes top for me. Mr vengeance is best toward the end when he gets nasty with the baseball bat. I like Oldboy enough to have watched it plenty but it's not on the same level as Lady Vengeance. The music's lovely too.
I need to see more Korean stuff but Tale of Two Sisters is the best Korean flick i've seen.

V for Vendetta 8½/10
(SPOILERS)
I can't believe it took me so long to see this film. In fact, I was quite surprised by how good the film turned out to be. This is an absolute must see of a film, it captures the essence of our time perfectly. Alan Moore's vision, together with the Wachowski brothers' script, is a deep allegory of the virtues of resistance and civil disobedience. More than that, it manages to perform a ritual act, a magical incantation, that hopefully strikes at the heart of the Beast, the Leviathan, of organized power.
However, all things said, the film was not perfect. There's some really poor acting here on the part of Natalie Portman. She does redeem herself towards the end, but for the first third of the film she's wholly unconvincing in my opinion. The masked anti-hero himself delivers his lines in a comically hyperbolic manner; then again, this IS a 'comic' we're talking about, so perhaps that's forgivable. But the first meeting of the two protagonists is like bad theatre. Some of the dynamic between the two characters is ridiculous. Why would she just give in to all his ridiculous antics? This is sado-masochism in operation. Also, the calculated effect of cliches and platitudes in the storytelling makes me feel we're dealing with a great, but not excellent, film.
Still, the whole subplot of the lesbian activist-lovers was one of the greatest things I've ever seen in cinema! Wow, wow, wow.

proof not every Korean film is brilliant, such a shame, the imagery is brilliant and there is a decent take on Blade Runner somewhere in there... wasted potential.

no, despite the mixed reviews i thought i'd like but the bad really outweighs the good... there is a nice story hidden away somewhere but its too muddled, if it was a bit more coherent, with better direction on the action sequences and more time fleshing out the characters, including the cyborg he's supposed to be in love with then you'd have a pretty damn good film. shame.
