nicotina - 2.4/5 - been reluctant to rent this for the past
seven years. i really should follow my intuition more
often.

plains, trains and automobiles - 3/5 - nice music. very odd
change of mood at times.

the incredible shrinking man - 4/5 - a film for all.

i'm also vvondering vvhether they used the same house for
all 1980s hollyvvood films.

oh sorry, nicotina came out in 2003. i thought they tried
too hard to be cool. review on the back called it a "spanish
pulp fiction". i think that's one of the reasons why i never
rented it. it's not easy randomly selecting movies, covers
and write ups can be so deceiving. i am usually distrustful
of any movie i first see, although i've watched many good
films with bad covers.

Burn After Reading - somewhere between 6/10.

I was hoping that after No Country For Old Men there's no
return to the bad times, but unfortumately I was wrong. I am
really surprised that they decided to start shooting with
such an uninspired script. Such a waste, they could've done
the same story i na much better way having so much talent
and all. None of the actors except Brad Pitt (!) was able to
save their roles either. It was shocking how unconvincing
Malkovich was in this movie. Especially the cursing. I
could've sworn the man had never uttered a fuck before.

I gotta disagree with you there on Rashomon. I've seen a
half-dozen or so of Kurosawa films, this was one of the
better ones.

you are deceiving, bit bare. even though you are shaking.

i started watching 'Captain Ron' earlier but it didn't sound
so good on these speakers so i decided to pause, have a
cigarette and switch to tv sound. some time has gone by and
the movie is still paused, no switch as of yet.

nice song in the beginning. that sounded cool on the
speakers. i already psyched myself out though. martin short
said much about how his character will be for the entire
movie when he got stuck in the doorway. he's a softy and
michael douglas will be the overbearing personality, too
much for martin to handle. martin will become victimised.
o'm sure the back of the dvd says something similar but i
didn't bothering reading it, i don't even know why i rented
it, i think i panicked. maybe once they're out on the ocean
it will be better.

Later: Heart of Glass

heart of glass - 3.5/5

my least favourite by herzog. i prefer his free style to the
'rigid' direction of this film but he's his own man so he
can make what he wants. it's a good film but not really what
i needed in my fragile state of mind. i should have gone for
something more familiar. god damn captain ron hardly set the
stage either.

the music in Aguirre is awesome. Herzog's films have nice
music in general. kind of calm ‘wholesome’ music,
optimistic in a way, which has a nice contrast to what is
actually happening in the film. Fitzcarraldo was my
introduction to Herzog and remains my favourite, but there
is much I haven’t seen by him. i think he is a very bold
director. and he has a cool voice. the moment i heard it in
Julien Donkey boy I immediately knew it was him. Klaus
Kinsky is also worth noting as being cool and associated
with Herzog.

I know his voice from Grizzly Man - very fitting.

The atmosphere of those Herzog's films featuring Kinsky is
unique, to me it's mostly thanks to his somehow mad and
surreal appearances and of course the soundtracks too.

Btw both Fitzcaraldo and Aguirre scores were written by
Florian Fricke, old german electronic music composer. Worth
checking.
