The Illusionist - 3/5
These foreign productions with American actors always come out awkward. This movie is no exception. It's as if they (foreign movie makers trying to make western/modern movies) are always 10 to 20 years behind the times. But, there are redeeming qualities like the acting and production values (cinematography, production design and visual effects).
But, alas, a weak script does this movie in. The means in which the Illusiionist (Edward Norton) reaches his goal is so obivous that the ending has no impact at all. In fact, the ending is another retread of The Usual Suspects ending and just about every M. Night Samalama...(how ever his name is spelled) movie ending: The lead character's previous words and actions now take on an entirely different meaning, revealing their true purpose and so on, etc...those endings are so tired and have now become a cop-out.
Oh, and to add, during a few of the scenes the boom microphone is clearly visable at the top of the frame, and, at times, the lighting set-up as well. Hell, some of the actual framing of the close ups are horrible. Instead of cutting the head off at the top of the frame so the mouth can fit, the chin is cut almost to the lips at times giving a sense of amateurism and just plain sloppy movie making.

you tell me! :)
It's definitely something to see, but I don't blame you if you can't stand sitting through it all the way. I sure didn't.
All in all pretty entertaining... Then again, I AM a Finn, and some of its over-the-top humour is local. To balance that, there are of course plenty of trekkie and star wars jokes, which ANYBODY should be able to get. Considering how popular it's become OUTSIDE of Finland, I'd think you'll have a whole new angle on it. The subtitles were pretty inventive too.
One thing about it, though: It's probably the best-looking Finnish film of all time. Which is not saying all that much, but still!
Ah, the wonders of blue screen! (not the Blue Screen of Death, the OTHER blue screen...)

Tape 9/10
R.Linklater rarely disappoints. This film is up there with slackers, dazed & confused, and waking life. School of Rock was a silly detour, but even then I enjoyed it. That baseball film might be his only miss so far, though I haven't seen that one.

the deer hunter - unable to finish it. some compelling moments but generally quite boring.
platoon - excellent war movie. all you need, really.
a very long engagement - is a bit too long
solaris (original) - was showing at local arthouse cinema as part of a russian film festival. so much cooler than the remake! i loved every moment. it looked great. complimented by the fact that the cinema has a bar! this movie is well accompanied by a stiff drink.

Solyaris= 2nd favorite movie ever.
I watched Firefox on the History Channel yesterday, it was a Clint Eastwood marathon. Pretty decent espionage movie, but like all that Cold War shit, a bit goofy 20 years after the fact.

Jet Li's Fealess - 3.5/5
Awkward like some foreign movies can be, this is still a good movie. It's not as sharp as other recent martial art films. The fight scenes aren't as grand as others and the plot is a bit predictable, but the film has charm and it made me care about China's rich culture.
