three extremes - 6/10. really let down by takeshi miikes segment.
children of men - 9/10. the best film i have seen at the cinema this year. its not been getting the best reviews but it really struck a chord with me, especially the end, loved the way you didnt know much about the larger story besides what clive owens character experienced. its just a small piece of a much bigger tapestry. so well directed as well, i thought Cuaron was a good director before but this really feels like him spreading his wings in terms of scope and audacity. those long takes!! fucking hell i know there must be edits somewhere but you cant see them and the results are phenominal. thoroughly recommended.

Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It had Raul Julia in it so I thought it might be good, but I was wrong. Between this and Street Fighter, he was involved in two of the worst movies ever. Cool.

The Departed - 8/10 Great story, moved quickly through the whole 2.5 hrs, though some of the acting might have been a little better. Plus, there was a whole love triangle thrown in for no good reason that I could see... there was already enough tension to make the story interesting without it. Great ending though, I recomend it.

Glenn Gould Hereafter - 3.5/5
Not a definitive documentary on Glenn Gould, but more of a cum inducing film for manic fans. A wet dream for Gould enthusiasts that is mixed with archival footage as well as a stand-in for Glenn in various scenes. I think this can be only fully enjoyed by people who already are familiar with this enigmatic musician. Not a good start for beginners, perhaps.
The Departed - 4/5
Uneven in spots, including some stuff in the end, but still immensely entertaining and well crafted. I like when old-time directors put out new movies. Their movies always stick out from the others, especially if they have always been about the crafting of a good story visually and script-wise. Also, some fine performances in this picture. Nice.

recycle, grizzly man is one of the most stunning documentaries I've seen... I wanted to like the electric car documentary more, but it feels like made-for-TV production. It raises good issues, however.
On another note, The Departed is currently #60 on imdb top films list, which makes me wonder if remakes - however good - should be banned by law. I'm sure it's a good ride, but leave the East Asians alone, Hollywood!

hahaha welcome back, dan!
death of a president - 2/5: it focused mostly on the events of the assassination of bush and the investigation/trial in the months following. it would have been more interesting if they'd focussed on predictions about what the effects would be on the national and international level, in the years following. that way there would have been less 'interviews' too, which i think is one of its negativs. the interviews are hardly convincing. the actors don't give a convincing display of being the 'real people' that were there while the events were taking place. admittedly, it's probably incredibly difficult to pull that off, and in some places it almost does...but that's not enough for this concept to work.

Yes I do, but I have never seen it. What I was trying to say, and thought I made clear, was that when an "old-time director" puts out a new movie (a movie they relatively just finished making, not a re-release of one of their "classics") it usually sticks out from everything else because of a "movie generation gap" for lack of a better phrase. Different techniques are imployed visually and story wise, but usually visually. Take, for instance, the recent Brian De Palma picture that came out. If, say, David Fincher had directed it, it would look and "feel" different from what De Palma produced. Younger directors will probably make different movies than old ones even if they are the same story. And, regardless of the story having already been told, The Departed is still a new movie.
But, yes, you have single handedly made it known that the original telling of this story is arguably better than Scorsese's attempt at it. Golf claps all around for you.

It's not the first time a film from the far east has done that to me. I guess it does sound a bit un-PC to say that, but quite literally, I'm telling it like I see it.
I expect that somewhere in Korea right now there's a guy sitting on his sofa watching some Hollywood movie and thinking to himself, 'man, all these dudes look the same to me'. In Korean though.

Actually our "racism" is more justified, since far eastern people _do_ look more alike than, say, hollywood actors. It's simple: they all have black/dark hair, they all have pretty similar body types and so on. (PC = dead)
I never had such problems, though. I guess I can pick up facial characteristics better?
