Right, the next thing I want to learn is how to do the amen cut-up's like Squarepusher and Dirqual...No matter what I have tried I just can't get the sound right. Is the original sample pitched up before you start sequencing?
The other thing I want to know is how to do the bass drum thing that I have heard Aphex, Chris Clark and Mike P do. Chris does it on The Gavel...it is like the a standard beat but then one of them sounds either reversed or it builds up or something. I can't figure that out either.
Just some hints on how it is done would be nice. :P

well, i'm not trying to be an expert, but there's gonna be a lot involved with what Squarepusher and Aphex et al do to their stuff....there's gonna be heavy EQ'ing, compression, gating, etc etc etc.
Then they've spent years getting to know how to put a good 'groove' on samples, etc etc etc
So the only way you'll learn is if you try.
And it's best if you try for yourself, and develop your ideas from then on, because then you'll get your own engineering and mastering style, and your samples will sound like yours - instead of sounding like it's ripped straight from another artist
:)

get a wave editor program, like Soundfore or CoolEdit. Cut out the bass, snare and high hats, and put them where-ever you want them..

gah, not more amen breaks!!
Meh, use it as a learning tool, dont end up putting out 4 fucking volumes of amen tracks though. I'm getting sick of hearing the same beat sampled all the time.

tip:
take a standard 909 house beat (2 measure loop or something) and pitch it up 5 notes in soundforge or whatever you are using.
Now use recycle to cut it up and save the individual wavs. What next? Enhance the bass in the samples containing a kick and remove bass from samples that dont contain a kick.
Load them into your sampler or into any program you use and try out your new, quite interesting drumkit.

beatslicer, or chop it up in wave editing programs and sequence all the cuts individually.
I don't like the idea of "quick tricks" on how to make drill n bass. Imho the best way to do it is entirely manually. Most of the time I just make my own kits now and spent ages on drum programming.

I downloaded a neat little program for re-arranging beats. Works a fucking treat and I have no idea where I got it from. I can e-mail it to you though if you want mate? It's 213KB zipped up. It's fucking simple to use as well. Look at the screenshot and see the colours? Change the colour and it changes the order that the sample is played in and other things. Nice. :D

sounds like you kinda know what you are doing.. just keep going. I guess i would have to hear a few more measures to see if something is going dreadfuly wrong.
The method I would use, using a tracker would be:
* Set the tempo for the track.
* Load break-beat (Amen).
* Adjust pitch of break-beat to sync with BPM so you have a nice loop.
* Once pitch is locked in, cut the break-beat into pieces; kick, snare, high hats, cymbol, shuffles, etc..
* Delete your uncut break-beat
* Playing the newly cut samples at the same pitch as the locked loop that was created means you can pgm the rythm however you want.. the same way you would program a beat using a synth kick drum and snare.. but now the timing will be accurate with the sequencer.
does that make sense?

just sample the the drum programing you want to learn and get it to loop in FTII then try and match it with a kick and a snare sample..
thats the best way. then you can make the amen break with what ever samples you want..
wet farts, what ever.

It's like a standard four to the floor bass or kick drum but it has like a reversed beat in it too...dunno if it is reversed or a slightly time stretched beat, but it gives a real extra impact. I have a feeling the reason I am having problems is purely down to timing. I'll just keep messing about and see what happens :D
