I recommend trackers as well. One advantage that trackers have for this over other methods is that you don't have to chop up your sample, you can just give offsets, which would presumably be harder to do otherwise. Here's about ten or twenty minutes' demonstrative work: (wouldn't have taken as long if I wasn't an unskilled idiot)
blarh
When I use drumloops, I never cut them into bits - I only do that if I want individual shots.
In the end, all it comes to is shifting stuff around, repeating bits, playing with the pitch etc. until it sounds neither boring nor out of sync with the rest of the track or the listeners' expectations, which can be hard in faster tracks. (the example above is in 212 bpm, and a lot of the time spent on it was making sure it didn't sound wonky)

if you had an amiga i hope you would be running protracker on it : )
has a great sample editor, i like it better than the sample editor in FTII
but only has four channels.. 2 left & 2 right but that i 4 if you output as mono..
glorius 8-bit mono-tone.

Yay, more amen break trickery! I used buzz tracker + a beta trackerererer that's not been released yet. Offset + retrigger are your bestest friends!

The only track I have that uses the amen that is available in some way is #7 [22:03] on Xltronic Vibes Vol. 2, and it is kind of old (and dumb). Wouldn't consider it a "call" track at all, either. I do all that stuff under a different thing nowadays.
