end of free site = end of trolls?

10 usd a year is really very little money, and there are
lots of ways of paying, not only credit cards... so really
any of us could afford such a payment (10 usd a year... come
on, its 0.83 usd a month)

maybe it would keep lots of trolls away from the site, cos
it wouldnt be funny anymore to come and troll around... not
if you have to pay.
well surely it wouldnt end with the problem, but surely with
most of it.

the problem I see is:
lots of nice people here wouldnt like to pay, so the place
would loose those nice regulars... and I dont really know
how to deal with that.

well maybe this idea is just stupid and nazi, I dont know

but, what do you think?

yeah but you and i are about the only ones with that
attitude, or so it seems :|

not that i think everyone should pay or stay away. or maybe
they should pay to post, is that what you mean, nacmat?
cause it is important that all the other information is
publicly available...

please, you cant really EXPECT people to pay ANYTHING for a
message board and a little online community. THere's
hundreds of these boards around. Making contributions
voluntary for extra privaleges is a great idea. Making it
mandatory is just fucking dumb.

I was kind of thinking about becoming a premium member

but if it was made mandatory
I wouldn't bother.

yeah sure, that would be a great way of getting rid of
trolls. however, it's not the ultimate solution.

i guess our current system is pretty good: feel free to
donate and get a premium account back!

i'd be out of here. mandatory $10 for a web site about
music? i go to lots of music sites that get much more
traffic than this one and only some of them ask for money,
and it's merely an optional donation (set your own amount).
if i need a discography i'll go to allmusic.com or
discogs.com. if i wanted to see the album cover, i'd get out
my cd case. if i wanted videos and mp3's, i'd go on
soulseek. i'm here for the message board (but i wish
xltronic crew the best at their project because it means a
lot to other people).

i'm just being honest with you phobia because so many people
don't tell you the truth. you won't see $10 from a lot of us
because we simply have more important and more necessary
things to do with that money. that's not an insult, it's
reality.

anyway, it's not like you're the one proposing that the site
go pay-only. i think making it optional, and giving donors
extra access and abilities, was a good idea.

that's not what i was saying at all. it's a good thought,
and to answer the original question:

i'm not sure if ending the free site will end trolls. a lot
of long-time users get called trolls or are told they are
trolling. some of these people have been here a long time
and like the board, so they would feel compelled to
contribute money to it and be paying members. also, if
you're always getting in trouble for harassing people, what
better way to get out of trouble is there but to give the
webmaster $10 as a sort of bribe? i'm not sure it would work
but that certainly wouldn't stop people from trying.

There are a lots easier ways to make a couple of hundred

question of covering costs well thats something else I might
be able to accept.

i bet warp would pay to have warpmart banners in the
discography, like click here to go buy this cd @ warpmart.

since the site's going to be practically devoted to warp
anyway, i don't see this as "selling out". you're urging
everyone to buy these albums regardless, why not cover some
costs this way. have you asked warp if they'd pay to put
banners in the discog, phobia?

cmon people - its $10 - ten measely dollars. i mean - if you
cant afford to pay $10 a year for a great servive - you
probably shouldnt even be spending your money on a computer
and the internet bills and whatnot. im sure everyone here
can manage to collect $10 easily - grab some change from
under the couch. stop smoking - whatever.

$10 is not a lot of money - im 15 with no job and parents
that dont give me money - and i can get $10 in a week
easily.

for $10 i can get a cd, a book, 2 lunches, 3 or 4 video
rentals, or give to a favorite charity or political group
(mine is U.S. PIRG, who i'm a member of and also worked for
one summer). i sympathize with anyone paying hundreds of
dollars to run a web site, but that's a choice they made and
i have no reason to give them my money so i can read, view,
and listen to the same things that are on other sites for
free. all i will give is my encouragement and compliments on
their progress.

well - im sure you can go without video rentals for a week
or two? (assuming you rent 3-4 vids every 2 weeks or so)

besides - like you said earlier - you can always d/l movies
and whatnot.

yea but i don't download movies, burn cd's, etc. for me
personally (just me), it's not worth paying $10 for any web
site unless you're getting exclusive content. if xltronic
has that, and it might, i would probably donate.
