he says the 40s 50s and 60s in the US were actually like communism, because of the high tax rates. that's not technically true, but in the context of where we're now it makes some sense. he really did study this stuff deeply, like, not just for a video. of course it's influenced in parts by someone's ideological background. a lot of stuff is touched on, because it goes over 100 years of US economic history, he gives an interesting look at the current gig economy as well.
(i can't with the dumb xlt takes, though epic is kind of entertaining in general)

people just be calling anything communism now, the new liberal leader in Canada is a banker and they're calling him a communist. Marx Carney
Haz and the ACP saying the US is already communist.
I'm sure Benn has some decent information on why grudging social democracy was better for American workers and even the economy in general than neoliberal market fundamentalism but calling it communism seems… misguided.
I'm reading about late 19th century German social democracy and reformism and it's the same thing, oh let's just leave the bourgeois in power and they'll give us treats. And it was explicitly in favour of colonialism and imperialism because if it wasn't the German workers being super-exploited it had to be someone.
I know you hate it when I fisk your youtubes. Sorry it will happen again

Tariq Khan on his book The Republic Shall Be Kept Clean: How Settler Colonial Violence Shaped Antileft Repression.
We’ll be releasing this conversation as a two part episode on this excellent book which studies how anticommunism within the US is deeply intertwined with settler colonialism, anti-indigenous thought, and genocidal violence. This helps us to reframe our often twentieth century centric view of anti-left repression in the US. Khan’s work on the 19th century in particular also helps us to see the ways things like race science, eugenics, and phrenology were formed a backbone of the original assumptions of US policing, anti-anarchist repression, lynching, and regimes of deportation. Alongside and related to settler colonial violence against indigenous people, and anti-Black violence, we also through this conversation really get into how central the repression of anarchists in the 19th century was to the development of logics and technologies of anti-left repression in the so-called United States.
It is also important to see the resonance between US genocidal violence and state repression and that of the so-called State of Israel on Palestinians, something we explore a little bit more in part two of this discussion along with delving into William McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt and more.

anything that doesn't align with your world view, will get a bad faith reading. an extreme bad faith reading, in fact. it's cool anti-colonialism apparently has a place in your world view now, but i wish you'd give ideas in general the benefit of the doubt: they're not the enemy

review The Doppelganger concept was interesting but maybe wears thin after a while. I didn't fully get what the shadow lands are, as opposed to the mirror world: two big parts of the book. Or the shadow lands are things like sweat shops in China, making our smart phones: things we don't want to see. While the mirror world is the fun house mirror version of our world. The obvious example being conspiracy theories (obvious because it's what the book is about). Like covid being designed, instead of a result of unfettered capitalism. But what is the connection between the shadow lands and the mirror world? There's too little of one. I do like the separate parts, though. I like Klein's research into the mirror world, talking about literature and Freud (who, I guess, now holds a place between fiction and non-fiction). And I like the chapters in the shadow lands part of the book dealing with autism treatment in 'Red Vienna' in the 1930's and Jewish thought in that same period, of which only Zionism survived. And also I like the very beginning of the book, where Klein lets herself go down the rabbit hole of conspiracies, following her doppelganger whom people confuse her with: Naomi Wolf (my favorite moment being her getting caught by her husband Avi, listening to Steve Bannon's War Room podcast, while doing yoga). That it's not made into a convincing whole, is maybe fitting for this book being also a diary of the years of covid lockdown and isolation.

Sorry if I came across as flip. I was responding based on what I had read in a number of reviews of her book and honestly didn't understand how it connected to the subject of my post.
If you think anti colonialism is something brand new for me then you haven't been understanding what I've been saying for some time now or I haven't been expressing it well. Once again I urge you to read this.
Lol at doing yoga while listening to a Steve Bannon podcast, that's so Covid. I like Naomi Klein. I saw her speak in Montreal in the 2010s. I get the impression she's too focused on the power of ideas in doppelganger.
Also, it's OK for us to disagree, don't turn it into a feud!

Having a look now and it's better than I thought. I apologize for being dismissive, big.
When radical and anti-establishment writers and scholars attempt to analyze the underlying systems that built and uphold power in our world, including the proven existence of covert operations to eliminate threats to those systems, it is common for them to be dismissed as conspiracy theorists. In truth, it is one of the most battle-worn tactics used to bury and marginalize ideas that are inconvenient to those who wield economic and political power, or who feel personally attacked by anti-corporate, anti-capitalist, or anti-racist analyses because the critiques implicate them. Every serious left-wing analyst of power has faced this smear, from Marx onward.
So there's, like, systemic analysis of oppression and the material interests and mechanisms the analysis uncovers, and then there's the doppelganger mirror image of that, the right wing covid conspiracies from Naomi Wolf? Am I getting this right? Anyways I'll read it now that I've got it downloaded, seems like a quick read.

yes, correct
the general theses might not be new for you. the cultural history stuff i mentioned might be though (btw: that's actually what i have a degree in). that's the appeal, as well as the the personal approach. i really think you could broaden your horizon with that sort of stuff. there's of course other writers to do that with as well, whom you'd possibly like more
you weren't *that* dismissive, but it was a gripe that had been building. i could communicate better about that as well.

yes, but there's so much to say about that. so many approaches to explaining it.
mass production of meat and monoculture of crops made it possible but you can argue those could have happened under socialism as well. but then you also come to the reaction: short term profits needed to go on. and you come to close allies of capitalism, so to say, like eugenics: the system being fine with non-profitable people dying off
