o, it isn't your imagination. Windows really is
installing the HP Smart App and renaming printers without
user interaction.

Microsoft has updated its Windows release health dashboard
to admit a problem exists. The title of the issue says it
all: "Printer names and icons might be changed and HP Smart
app automatically installs."

The problem appears widespread – as well as Windows 11,
versions of Windows 10 going right back to the Windows 10
Enterprise 2015 LTSB have been hit by the issue, which
appears to affect Windows devices with access to the
Microsoft Store. Windows Server, including Windows Server
2012, is also affected.

t_issue/

HP Smart is a genuine app with no malicious intent
(unless perhaps you regard the pushing of official HP ink
cartridges as malicious). Regardless, it is being forcefully
installed without the user's permission when Windows
installs the HP driver, while it also renames and changing
icons of existing connected printers. Since there is no
current workaround or fix for this problem, you may want to
hold off on Windows updates from November 27th onwards,
until Microsoft nixes the HP-happy update issue and provides
a fix for affected users.

has this just shown up on anyone's computer? i'm curious.
because if the HP printer app it pushes were itself
vulnerable, now it's on every windows PC? Or every windows
PC with a printer?

random thot: what would you do with a botnet of every
windows PC?

(on dec 7?)
