Where do you people stand on a few different things, we have a group of people that think that racism largly exists within ... well lets say America or Canada, and they think that this will ofcourse hurt them in the job hunts, raises and all that sort of thing. What about this thing I saw on TV the other week or so, about black men and white women or vice versa dating and all this stuff, I was watching in horror! The black man was saying that he thought the woman was racist because she used the word "nigger" during a story she was telling about her two black friends arguing, he then went on to tell her that black men cannot be racist because of all thats happened. Now, tell me.... well dont. My opinion is that its just as bad to tell someone they cant have a mind, or thought, or word even if it is racist in private than it is to BE a racist. I dunno where this thought was supposed to go, I just woke up after a long night of drinking and I started thinking, maybe it was a dream. Oh well, my ignorant friend always says, {and I laugh} "Its only a double standard because its twice as true" .... uh..... I dunno, sorry guys. |

I posted this before on another good MB I frequent ... here is the best response/talk I had..... "a) black people who call each other "nigga" are hypocrites, especially if they dictate who is allowed to use the word, because they are totally missing how they allow themselves to be continue to be oppressed by mainstream culture that tries to keep them down. Â is it a coincidence that mainstream culture makes it "cool" for the stereotypical black person to drink 40's, smoke blunts, place a low value on education, set low expectations, etc, but at the same time keeps those "cool" traits from allowing them to achieve success? there are all sorts of paradoxes like this that set up people up for failure (seeing a white man/woman as the ultimate score, but hating them at the same time; drug culture; negative sexual stereotypes (trains, etc))... Nathan McCall's "Makes Me Wanna Holler" is really eye opening on this front. Â I didn't really understand the social pressure to behave in such a degenerative way until I read that book. b) on the other hand, words only have power over you when they're restricted like this. they only have power to offend people when they allow themselves to be offended. Â (uh, duh... does that sound stupid?). Â part of me feels like we should just get these words out there and let them fly. Â for instance, fuck, shit, cock, cunt, asshole, and any of the other 7 words you can't say on TV, don't offend me. Â there's nothing inherently offensive about them because they're so overused now. Â what is offensive is context, meaning and how they are used. Â so if somebody says "what the fuck is that shit all about?" I've got no problems, but if they say "fuck you shithead" I'm more likely to be offended, not from the words themselves, but because of the meaning they intend towards me. Â so why can't people recognize if somebody says "that's my nigga" regardless of their race that it's a positive comment and "pump my gas boy" is a negative comment worthy of all your loathing? |

Positive discrimination sucks. At least with normal discrimination, if you point it out you get kudos for being "culturally aware". If you point out positive discrimination you get branded as rascist or sexist. You've made quite a good point rephlex, and one that I mainly agree with you on (for once ;) ). |

Yes he can. I don't understand how you can say that he can't- surely that view is in itself rascist? My friend is half caste and says that his dad's side of the family (who are black) are more rascist than his mum's. Surely he's in the best position to comment on something like this? |

Racism is and only exists as the idea of superiority of one race over another and that idea can't do anything to hurt me. White people's idea that they are better then me, which is a racist idea, doesn't hurt me. But what really hurts me is that there racist idea is backed by power that they have had by the theft of my resources, killing all my brothers and sisters and rapin and doin all the bullshit that has come with that. Racism doesn't neccesarily have anything to do with superiority- it means being prejudiced towards someone on the grounds of their race, for good or ill. It can mean assuming that a jewish person will a good businessman or a chinese person will be a good mathmatican as well as thinking that a puerto rican youth is likely to be a criminal. Black people can apply this sort of prejudice to other people too, they may assume that someone hates them, just because they are white. |

Seeing as black people are in the minority where I live they all hang around together; asians,chinese,african.etc. When they are together they are best of mates but are always dissing each other and being quite rascist against one another. They are comfortable with it. And when I as a white guy hang with them they do it to me too. I don't have a problem with it. It means nothing to me as I feel accpeted by them. I think if matters of race din't cropp up in conversation we would be more uncomfortable together by hiding it under the carpet. Our diversity is our bond, and I love it. |

Ah the controversial issue of zeitgeist! I personally believe in it, but I only apply it to groups/people I haven't met. Once I've met someone I don't really consider zeitgeist a big influence on how I perceive them. That said 2 of my chinese mates are brilliant at maths and are training to be engineers, a japanese friend is brilliant at drawing manga and an australian friend of mine really does like barbeques, surfing, kangaroo steak and VB Bear! |

Racism is only a byproduct of capitalism and who is in control does not happen to be dark skinned people of the world and I think thats just a tragedy. I think when we look at how 3/4's of the worlds resources are engulfed by only a people who make up less then 1/4 of the world and those happen to be the European and North American people and the rest of the world is starving, I think its a BIG tragedy.
