Really sad to see you have to resort to this, Phobia.
Honestly, i'd rather just donate to the site directly than
be forced to read cringeworthy offers like this, which I'm
sure you hate yourself. My email client actually marked it
as spam too, so it appears you've been reported on the spam
databases.

I don't want to see xlt die, but I don't think I could read
another email like that.

Disappointed to say the least.

A whole army of capable electronic musicians in this forum,
and an offer that looks like the newest Dance Ejay. Kinda
insulting if you ask me.

ImageLine or Propellerheads (the latter is swedish). I know
Native Instruments are more than happy to throw giant
budgets into Youtube commcercials, so this might be
interesting for them too.

Or maybe you could do a deal with some of the guys making
cool VST's, for instance SugarBytes. Might be more
applicable since most of us already have a favorite DAW for
composing. Maybe a mastering suite of some kind could be an
idea.

Come on phobz, people who post here buy or steal pro level
software and know how to use it. That pyramid scheme music
shitware email was just embarrassing. If you're that
clueless about music software just ask us, we know our
stuff.

What you might consider doing, is what ronnie at rekkerd.org
does, where he does advertising directly for small
developers instead of through Google ads (pennies per click,
pathetic) - he charges a weekly fee directly for banner ads.
Also small music labels, and maybe retailers like boomkat.

Developers you want to target include Twisted Tools,
FXPansion, U-he, Sugarbytes as Junktion mentioned, D16,
Voxengo, PSP, Tone2, and maybe eventually NI, Propellerheads
and Ableton. Maybe some iOS developers too. Companies making
production-ready loops would be less likely to get clicks
here.

I figure if you can get the readership up, musicians and
developers would both be willing to advertise. Xltronic has
brand recognition and a long legacy of loyal users many of
whom would be drawn back if the place became more active.

See if you can get musicians to do special radio events
again, stuff like that. Start rebuilding. Give us something
to come back to.

For some reason the chorus of So long, Marianne is playing
loudly in my head as a result of this thread.

The whole thing is really bizarre and seems so.... misguided
and desperate. It's rather sad!

Surely this partner isn't your friend Phobiazero? And not
really your "partner" either. Just, by the looks of it, some
company trying to peddle air.

Your community has spoken. They don't like this shit.

I have no suggestions but I feel the need to type. Sorry.

Love this mb for over 10 years now, really hope it survives
(in a way people can respect - or not..who cares as long as
the money comes in right? Do you want to support companies
like these? Does it make a difference either way? Other
people are stupid enough to do it so we might as well. Fuck
our personal ideals etc..).

I'd love to hear drsgrfn's opinion on the matter.

i don't think it's unreasonable there's an affiliate blag or
three a year, as long as it doesn't get too spammy. more
concerning is the complete tastelessness of who phobs has
elected to partner up with. makes me nervous that the
"reboot" is going to be tacky as fuck, or worse -- money
grubbing.

p.s. does this board really need a dedicated server?
wouldn't it just be cheaper to get a xen vps, amazon ec2,
etc.? seems like overkill, and a major, recurring
expense....

This board definitely has heart, so I think it's not too
much of a problem to make money with such a strong-ish
community and well-rooted site.

Ideas:
-bring back contests, have prize money for winner, charge $5
entry fee to put money where skillz are-- percentage of
whole goes to site.
-ads from sponsors and individuals- I personally would pay
for a month ad of a personal album release, just to get my
music to the right people and feel like a star by having my
album cover highlighted on every page.
-have more incentive for premium membership, like
signatures, larger avatars, etc.
-charge for mod privs, and have privs taken if
post-editing/deleting is abused
-have a poker section with real money
-sell xlt merchandise
-use mixes, contests, and album reviews tied into a blog to
bring in new members-- charge to have user-submitted albums
sincerely reviewed for the blog (so could just write "shit")
+feature
-tie every post into fb so can be reposted, to bring in new
members
-conceptualize a massive new xlt platform, use kickstarter
to generate the millions it'll take to execute it
-irl, sell weed
