suggestions:

making bigger, more intrusive ads, but making the board ad
free for those who donate (i forget if this was one of the
features already)

bringing in more traffic with featured "ask me anything"
threads from established producers - i know at least a few
of the pros post/used to post here, and the producer q&a
threads i've seen on dubstepforums and glitchhopforums are
the only reason i visit those sites at all. plus you could
advertise them thru the newsletter for max exposure.

purchased ad space would be great, and not just for artists.
on somethingawful they have the same deal, and paying for
obnoxious ads blasting particular users has become really
lucrative for the site. considering all the trolls here, i'm
sure go off like gangbusters here! really, how easy would it
be to get listen2metalk to pay for a banner ad displaying
"ceri jc sucks!"

Why, why not free amazon ec2 server? @Phobs

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2013-03-11 20:25 [#02451367]
Points: 25264 Status: Regular

ec2's pricing is confusing; it's probably a bad fit for
this, but it's still an option.

a dedicated, colocated server just seems overkill for this
crate. i guess the question is, how much bandwidth does this
site need? if it's less than a terabyte or two a month,
you're just pissing lots of money down the toilet doing
anything more than a virtual host.

free? only the lowest speced ec2 setup is for free.... and
it won't cut it. my plans for xltronic demands a dedicated
server. also, the actual server, is already built, so I just
need colocation. an ec2 with 25% of the performance from my
machine costs 3 times more.

will use a cdn for heavily downloaded media.

linode = $20/mo

and it offers affiliate signups like dubturbo

Man-- why the hell is xlt so damn cyberpunk? Experimental
mailing software, dedicated servers being built in closets,
the whole website being handcoded in wordpad and pretzels, a
random dot here, dead image links there...

It's like this is Road Warrior, and we just happen to be on
the cutting edge of hacked technology, running the current
xlt off a modified lawnmower+refrigerator setup.

xlt makes it feel like I'm living this video.

p.s. the vid is ATR- Sick To Death, which is forever badass.

I'll donate a few bucks to fix the site as it is:

- reactivate avatar change functionality
- give image posting privileges to subscribing members
- implement an automatic linking dialog box as in modern
forums

This site should stay a message board imho withouth popping
videos spammed everywhere, there's plenty of other sites
like that, in its simplicity this site reads both on my
phone and desktop PC better than any tapatalk based forum,
it's fast and it should stay that way

my 2 cents

also lol @dubturbo

Either leave it as is or shut it down. It's too late now.
This place has a reputation for being overrun with assholes
who don't welcome new users. You have to be insane to stick
around.

Btw, Phobia, I received mail from you and came to post here
but had forgotten my password- but your password recovery
doesn't work. It never sent me a password. Took 4 days to
get a confirmation email for this new account.

I've been on and off this board since 2001. Mainly, the
users are too rude for anyone to take it seriously because
no moderates here to discourage abuse. It is what it is.
It's a hellhole and should stay that way. That being said, I
donated. Best of luck.

i'm sure the code is a rat's nest, and that's why it's
tempting to just chuck things and start anew. but i'm with
krim and json, i'd really prefer xlt to stay as-is, plus
bugfixes.

i'm concerned the reboot will get stuck halfway, or the
"new" server made from old VCR parts breaks in the middle of
the night, and p.zero won't get his volvo over to the data
center for two weeks, or -- shocker! -- only ten people a
year donate $3.03 and the kitty drains in three months from
powering some bloated CMS behemoth with "live chat" and
"blogs" that no one actually wants

i don't think anyone is looking for this site to be any more
than it is, and any attempt to do so would be pitifully
misguided and kind of pathetic.

xlt only still exists because it's a long-standing community
of assholes who somehow simultaneously love and hate each
other. the site design and features has about 0% to do with
that fact, and trying to update the site to be more of a
"hub" likely just alienate old users and not really be
anything unique enough to bring in new blood.

XLT Y U TRY 2 B WEB 2.0?

i see no reason to encourage kids; they're bad enough
already. expensive and boring before they learn to talk,
expensive and annoying after.

in fact, i'd like to propose an XLT captcha: if you can't ID
the various anatomical parts of a vagina, your account
signup is rejected

i grew up with software before hardware. i remember finding
FL 2.0's step sequencer irritating -- i wanted a piano roll,
with the option to disable snap. so i just used FL to make
shitty loops for a few months before abandoning it entirely.
i'm gathering that was a bit of sad timing, given what i've
heard about the slicer.

should this place be viewable to under 18s? 16s? i don't
think so!!

But xltronic is found by a google search so is accessible to

So either make it inaccessible to youngsters or partition

What are my biggest stumpling blocks i have to make beats
like a pro:

The cognitive ones (“I can’t do this, i don't understand
this, it is boring and complicated”)

The emotional ones (boredom, tiredness, and resentment
towards spending long hours in front of the computer and
learning new stuff)

The behavioral ones (not knowing much about music theory,
can't play an instrument, don't know much about music
production, lack of talent, easily distracted)
