Read Niall Griffiths 'Sheepshagger'. I just bought his first novel 'Grits'. He's amazing.
I know its an obvious one but Ken Kesey's 'One flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' is amazing.
Irvine Welsh's 'Trainspotting' is one of the best I've read too.
Also Tom Wolfe's 'A Man in Full' is class.

Doug Coupland - Life After God ... (is his best & my personal fave, but the rest are very good as well)...
Chuck Paulaniuk "Choke" or "Fight Club" or "Invisible Monsters" or "Survivor"...
Brett Easton Ellis - Someones mentioned American Psycho so go for "Glamourama"...His early books are very good as well if you like that 80s nilistic LitBratPack thing (Jay Mcinery are all that)..- Less Than Zero, The Rules of Attraction...
If you like "One Flew Over.." by Ken Kesey then you probably like "The Elctric Kool Aid Acid Test" by Tom Wolfe - it's the story of Kesey & his experiments with LSD...
Dave Eggers - "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" - Over Hyper a bit but a fucking good read and Style-wise, way up there....The McSweeneys Journal/Website by the same is very cool if you like modern US Lit...
I could go on, I basically live in a library...or so it seems sometimes...

KEN - yeah The Informers is pretty good (if a little thin compared to those 2), kinda fits in between AP & GL....Did you notice Patrick Bateman makes an appearance in GL?...(as well as "one of the Aphex Twins" ... I kid you not...)...
I got AP when it was first published and it was so much trouble to get hold of - none of my local bookshops wanted to touch it & I had to go to 2 or 3 before I found someone who would order it for me...It's a fucking powerful book and so much better/deeper than the film (which was a kinda dissapointment for me...didn't think it really "got" the book at all...)...
xf: nope, not that one..."Great Apes" is one I've read...

i agree-the first half of giac was class-good insight into the chracters, initially a great tale of love lost and waiting-and reminded me of generation x in many ways, but the ending just left me a bit like, 'oh..ok'. theres a great bit about climing up a hill and the earth was thick like dog food-thats a great image..i guess i should reread..
agree with the ap film, its good but farcical, a great performance, but not a good adaptation. my mate has the dvd and the director comments in a bonus interview that that was the angle she wanted..shame-could have been class-you know they're making ap 2? no joke!!

Yeah, go for a Re-read...it's a bit of new DC style in GIAC but it does work well as long as you don't mind it seeming a bit unrealistic...it was a bit of a suprise when you read it the first time...I was the same as you thinking "mmm...ok"...

I never had any problems with Gibson style...kinda Chandler-esque; that sort of world-weary detective thing of Film-Noir fame...
"The Sky was the colour of a TV tuned to dead channel"...what a great first line..
That whole Neromancer series was good... But I think I enjoyed the Virtual Light/Iduro/All Tommorrow Parties ones even more (and the cover art on the Hardbacks is soooo cool...I've got a thing about Hardback books; expensive but worth it to read stuff as soon as it's published...I hate waiting for paperbacks to come out even if they are 1/2 the price)..
Didn't like "The Difference Engine" tho at all - the one he did with Bruce Sterling (who I don't really rate fictio-wise...non-fiction he's ok)...

jand: I've seen the difference engine on textz.com, so, you don't think it's worth spending office internet budget and printer on? I liked the Neuromancer trilogy better than the other one (although it is also good), and I liked sterling's stories from the '80s (Mozart in Mirrorshades was ace) and his Islands in the net novel.... So?
Oh, yeah, that opening line is one of my favourite ones.

KEN...that sounds like the worst sort of sequel ever...argggh...
meho...I didn't like it but your milage may vary as they say...not Gibson enough for me...(and probably the victorian angle didn't help...)...
Mirrorshades is that CyberPunk anthology, yeah?...I've never seen that in a shop or I would def have bought...
Burroughs..I like his life better, was really into all that Beat Gen thing of his, Kerouacs etc.. but never really liked his books/writing style...all that cutup lark was an interesting way of working but didn't produce much quality text...Cronenbergs Naked Lunch movie was pretty cool tho once you let go of all rational thought & let it flow...

jand: well, i didn't like the film. too slow, too cheesy, and the book is a fucking delirium. And it's written more or less straight (as in no cut-up, no montage), kinda Hubert Selby meets Philip K. Dick
Mirrorshades was an anthology I think, but I have never seen it either (well, I do live in Serbia...), but the story I mentioned was in one of our SF magazines and it was really great, along with some other of his stories... The most of other cyberpunk was written by wannabes wanking into their typewriters about exotic drugs, exotic technology and shit, wearing their mirrorshades on and listening to some electronic music I guess. But newer Bruce sterling shit is too much by numbers for me...
