[Ophecks] MGS4

Are you getting this when it comes out?

I'm considering using the stimulus check to get it. (if i
get one) The stimulus check is a check given out this year
that will either be $300 or $600 (add $300 or $600 per child
if applicable) because America's economy is failing
(although relatively speaking we're not doing so bad to
others). I live in a terrible country.

So anyway, I've got the fever. I haven't played anything new
in a while and the Wii isn't cutting it for me, like most
nintendo systems, and a ps3 is looking mighty fine. I've
been perusing reviews and they're all pretty great. The only
complaint so far has been the storyline which I've been a
little weary of from trailers. Seems to be similar to #2 in
confusion/rediculousness level.

I'm considering buying the PS3 just for this.. they're
releasing some kind of bundled thing, aren't they?

Of course. My hype level is off the charts right now. If
this doesn't end up being my favorite game ever, I'll be
crushingly disappointed. But I have no doubt it will usurp
MGS3 and Deus Ex and everything else. You have to get it...
everybody must, they pumped so much money into this and I
don't want games like this to stop being profitable while
games like Wii Fit dominate. Is the check going towards a
PS3 or do you already have one?

It does seem to be going down the MGS2 route of having
extremely long cutscenes and a convoluted plot, but I don't
mind... the crazier, the better. I loved the MGS2 mindfuck,
it was hilarious and actually pretty clever. The problem
with MGS2 was that there wasn't enough gameplay sandwiched
between the huge story. The game was tiny and woefully
short. MGS4 is supposed to be HUGE... Kojima has learned a
lot about pacing, and the controls and camera are fixed.

Every review has stated that the gameplay is amazing, it's
the story that's going to make this MGS another typically
polarizing experience... good for Kojima for not giving a
fuck and delivering yet another self-indulgent smorgasbord
of creativity.

"good for Kojima for not giving a

of creativity."

Don't say it yet! Say it after you've played it! ... I have
no doubt it's going to be great, but let's not get ahead of
ourselves here.

I should pick up MGS3: Subsistence, I never finished that
game. But I agree that the craziness in MGS2 was highly
enjoyable.

Yes, but once again Europe gets screwed over by Sony,
despite being one of it's strongesta and loyal territories.
I believe theres a 40gb PS3, 1 sixaxis controller and the
game for £299.99 in the UK, which compared to the US/JP
bundle is very poor. MGS4 is a game which NEEDS the Duel
Shock feature, but alas, it's not yet available in Europe
:/

Oh well, the game looks incredible. I'll probably buy a PS3
for it.

wait and buy one when FFXIII comes out.. then I'll have two

I completely agree with you. I'm sick of the complaints
against the mind-fuckeyness of MGS2. I just really enjoyed
how absurd it was, you running around naked, the colonel
telling you to turn your console off, all this other stuff
going on; it was like nothing I'd ever experienced since the
16-bit days (when games were more surreal because there
wasn't the power there to enable them to be 'realistic.) I
know the story is flawed, but I applaud it for being the
only time a game has ever attempted to look at itself and
indulge in a bit of postmodern trickery.

MGS3 is beautiful though. It retained the insanity, but
built a wonderful game around a slightly more approachable
story. I hope MGS4 keeps the trademark Kojima humour and
strange fantasy along with all its gameplay enhancements.

All the MGS games have broken through the fourth wall...

Oh, and by the way: Metal Gear Retrospective!

What's the theme of MGS4?

Apparantly MGS had "GENE", MGS2 "MEME", MGS3 "SCENE", and
MGS4 ... "DREAM"? I believe I read that somewhere...

The humor is so important. One of the things I hope comes
back in MGS4 are the funny optional codec conversations. In
MGS3, every time I got a new weapon, item, animal, camo,
found a new area, met a new character, etc, I'd call up
every support character one by one. Tons of interesting
dialogues. And it carried over into the gameplay, I've
beaten the game probably 7-8 times and I kept discovering
weird new tricks each time. That's why I hate when people
downplay the gameplay in this series because of the focus on
story... the games themselves are incredibly detailed and
reward creativity and experimentation.

I'm sure MGS4 will retain the decadent sense of humor and
all the sharp self-awareness. And I'm also hoping for the
return of the melodramatic deathbed monologues that were
sorely missing from MGS3.

'"Dream''? Never heard that, but could be. There was a
trailer a while back with Snake in a helicopter dreaming
about Shadow Moses. And it looked like it was actually
playable... now THAT'S jizz-worthy fan service. Interactive
flashbacks?

"That's why I hate when people

Indeed. I don't know how many times I've replayed the
tanker-chapter just for the sake of messing around and
experimenting, annoying the soldiers, distracting them by
knocking on the walls, and stuff like that.

I just hope there's a nice indoor-part in MGS4, which I find
to be an essential aspect of the MGS-concept.

An image such as this does pretty much sums up the
whole series, gaming-wise. It wasn't till mgs3 that it was
mostly in an outdoor environment.

Do you still have a radar in this game? I've seen a ring
around Snake, which I assume, functions as the radar...

From the screenshots, it looks like this game brings
together every possible MGS environment and play style.

outdoor

As far as the radar goes, I haven't seen it yet, I hope it's
gone. Much more fun to rely on natural senses and vision
over a HUD.

I think the ring indicates some sort of camouflage
efficiency radius... if you're talking about the one in that
early gameplay footage video...

Yeah, you can see it here.

Mysterious ring (01:06)

Apparantly all you have to do is to lean towards the surface
you want to imitate with your Octocamo-suit, and activate
the camouflage, or so it seems. Or perhaps it happens
automatically.

For those of you who have already owned a PS3, are you
planning on purchasing a dualshock 3 controller along with
the game?

I have the Sixxaxis controller, but I heard certain elements
of gameplay benefit from the new shock controllers.... esp.
in light of the fact that the MGS4 PS3 bundle is shipping
them.

I'm considering it, but I'm unsure how much these new
controller run. I'm just wondering if anyone thinks it will
really enhance the game play (ie- FEELING the bombs blasting
and gunfire) or while it be just another incidental detail.

thoughts?

No, actually, that looks like a radar.. like the one in
Portable Ops.. sound based. At least it seems to show a sort
of sound-wave "peak" where the soldiers are...

I'm one step ahead of you curbcreeper. I just bought a ps3
last week simply for this game; I can't wait! The
anticipation was and is killing me, so I had to give in. Add
in the fact that I hadn't gotten to play GTAIV, and "poof,"
Sony takes more of my money.

Personally, I haven't bought a Dual Shock yet and I don't
plan on it. I hope they realize that most people that are
going to be playing MGS4 will only have a Sixaxis, and don't
put in any important game mechanics that require rumble.

I really don't care about rumble and I don't miss it at all.
Just a faster way to drain the controller's battery. It was
cute playing Star Fox 64 for the first time, and the
original MGS1 had a clever gimmick, but other than that,
whatever.

This game couldn't arrive here fast enough! I guess all the
footage we've seen to date has been from probably the first
15 minutes of game play or so. I know that was the case for
MGS2 and MGS3 (I think).

I'm correct in saying we havent seen any boss battle footage
have we?

It's interesting that they are all mech-women.

Ok.. according to a review, that ring is indeed the radar,
but more surprising is the fact that, if you have a rumble
pack, the controller will act as the radar?!

Playtime: 20-30 hours.

The reviewer threw a six on the review-dice, btw.

Controller = radar what does that mean... like the
anti-personnel sensor from MGS2 and 3? Rumbles when you're
close to a person?

BTW today is Christmas Eve and I'm 10 years old

I'm not sure. It's a possibility. As the radar in that video
seems to have been sound based anyway, it's possible that
it'll simulate sounds or something.

If there have been some new-fangled technological advances
that have enabled better control of the rumbling, it's not
impossible that team Kojima, with their excellent
track-record when it comes to things like these, have made
it so that it's even possible to determine in what direction
the enemy is from the way the controller vibrates... It's
not impossible, but I'm not sure how likely it is
either. We'll just have to wait and see, I guess.

What has me most excited is the possibility of 30 hours
gameplay (I'll probably spend as much time as possible,
trying to get perfect stealth and having fun with soldiers,
etc haha).

I have to admit I'm surprised the game is as long as the
reviewers are making it out to be, I was wrong about it
being about 15-20. Most people are taking 30 hours to beat
it, which is PHENOMENAL, then you factor in the usual MGS
replay value- different play-styles, countless optional
tricks and strategies and gear, and MGO, and it's crazy.

This is the first action game that's going to go to toe to
toe with the monstrous RE4 and knock out the heavyweight. Up
to this point, games like Gears and Uncharted have been so
puny.

That's one of the worst and most boring games I've ever

Well I'm just speaking length/size wise. Whether you like it
or not isn't really important. And MGS2 was outrageously
small. Even Kojima knew he blew it and released
''Substance'' to give it some ''substance''.

Right. I never bothered finishing it. I have no idea how far
I got, but trying to move Mr Human Tank with little Ms
Sunshine in tow just removed any shred of hope that the game
would ever pick up.

I actually think that, although the naked/fission mailed
stuff was funny, they could've made more out of the inside
of Arsenal Gear. It could've been part of the mission to
tamper with its controls (or insert the virus there), or
maybe a lengthy extra stealthy session where you'd have to
pose as a guard, stand in attention when facing superiors,
etc. It could set a good stage for the RAY fight, and give a
slightly better explanation for why they'd suddenly
malfunction (it took too long).

30 hours gameplay.. I guess he wasn't joking when he said
they'd already dropped stuff due to BR size limitations!

Arsenal Gear should have been one of the coolest MGS
environments and host to some great gameplay setpieces, but
the only rooms I remember were the boring hangar where
you're running around naked, and the colon, a boring tunnel.
God that game was frustratingly undercooked, but they
learned from it.

And I don't expect 30 hours of GAMEPLAY from MGS4. It's
taking people 30 hours to beat it, but about 10 of them are
cutscenes. Still 20-23 hours of pure gameplay is ideal.
That's the RE4 sweetspot that more games need to strive for.

Hopefully this game incorporates the cutscene interactivity
from MGS3 and lets me look down at Naomi's cleavage in first
person.

Apparently, interactivity is limited to pressing a button at
certain places for cutscenes from previous games. Of course,
it's possible that the reviewer just didn't remember to
press R1 or whatever, but he mentions explicitly that
“this is as far as cutscene interactivity goes”
(although he does so in Norwegian).

Of course, MGS cutscene flashbacks, even if they have
received updated graphics (I'd rather have the originals,
actually), are a welcome addition, and a good replacement
for other kinds of interactivity (spare me the feigned
interactivity of quicktime events). The series is one of the
very few that can actually produce goosebumps and nostalgia
with its score and cutscenes, so using that advantage to its
fullest can't hurt.

that's probably not the game but the sort of settings you're
using. you just got to play around with the graphical
settings a bit, or try a different software driver. FPS
limit helps if you want steady frame rates.

I'm looking forward to the flashbacks, whatever they are.
Rather than scenes I've already done, I was hoping for
flashbacks from Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2... something to
flesh out the action and characterizations from some of the
more important scenes. Something like controlling a young
Snake fistfighting Grey Fox in the minefield and hearing
what they have to say to each other, then flashing back to
reality when you hit the deathblow... seeing glimpses of the
real Outer Heaven and Zanzibar in 3D glory would be insane
fan service, which is what this game is all about.

Probably not going to happen, and maybe that's for the best,
but the unassuming MSX games and the retrofitted recaps
based on them just isn't enough for me.

Cygnus- what video plug-in are you using? Try going to video
configuration, check ''use FPS limit'' if you see it, and
set the FPS limit at 60. That will keep the game from going
faster than it's supposed to. Or try different plug-ins.

There's also the PC version of Metal Gear Solid, which is
exactly like the console version, but better, and you won't
need to emulate anything.

Yeah, I think it's going to have flashes from all of the
games, but there's still a question of how flashes from
MG(+2) and MGS3 would relate to Solid Snake. It would have
to come from other characters, at least.

I think I'll actually have to play the original MG games.. I
remember having a go at the first one at some point in time,
but it just kind of faded away.. probably because I hadn't
gotten too far into it.

Possible spoilers?

It is 30 hours including cutscenes apparently, with 10-15
hours being movie business. I've read a fair few reviews and
the ones that aren't screaming 'EXCLUSIVE!!! 10/10' say the
game appears to lose steam after the opening third, losing
all of the new mechanics (such as the evolving war zone) and
returning to traditional Metal Gear fair although a much
improved version of it. The ending also appears to be a mess
with Kojima heading in to self indulgent dross but when does
he not? Die hard Metal Gear fans will love it regardless and
I hope I'm one of them. I do not, however, expect this to be
anywhere near one of the best games ever.

Reactions at a gaming forum I look at called rllmuk seem
extremely positive. Apparently the game mechanics are highly
evolved since older MGS games, the controls more intuitive,
and the production values superb. And yes, it does go
batshit crazy at the end (and in other places) apparently,
but they seemed to like that... (and I wouldn't want
anything less from an MGS game.)

Oh, and people over at the Edge forum seem to be liking it a

Unfortunately, I don't actually have a PS3, because I have
no money and everybody else I know is also in dept, but
never mind. (I suppose having lots of port and worrying

dross means.

''Traditional Metal Gear fare'' is always varied and
imaginative, and now they're IMPROVED it? Fantastic!

Self indulgent gibberish? Fantastic!

Cherry picking the worst reviews out of a cluster of great
ones usually doesn't do a game much justice. They could be
rational and level-headed, or they could just be missing the
point.

Right now I am NOT level headed, I'm just sitting around
drumming on my desk waiting for Walmart to open at 8. Yes,
Walmart is my only option.

Mate bought it. Seen it.

Awesome!

There were tons of in-jokes already in the introduction!

And sometimes there are weird live-action sequences...
couldn't figure anything out about them from what I saw.. I
have to read now, so I couldn't stay and watch. I also want
to save the good stuff for when I get my hands on this game
myself.

Yeah, even before you play it's fun as hell! Install screen
was great, title menu was great, the (whatever you want to
call that part) was great, and now I'm in the war and have
no idea what to do and it's glorious

The segues from the awesome cutscenes to gameplay are so
much better now, very smooth and immersive

Now for the start of many hours of fun, broken up by short
breaks so I can circle jerk with everybody else on the
internet (and maybe complain)
