marie antoinette -3/5
It kind of leaves you empy and a bit cold at the end but it was nice enough. Good soundtrack, but seemed like it relied too much on the music for atmosphere at times where the movie was lacking. There was also this softening chorusy portamento effect on some of the music, which I think was used to integrate it better? Anyway, it made me think of Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon. Which to me is the benchmark of period movies regarding amazing shots. Fuckin love that movie.

300 - 4/10 so so-so it left me thinking 'so?' Saw III - 1/10 no matter how pissed i was when i plonked my arse down to watch this i shouldve known better. gets one point because i fell asleep halfway through and woke up with my hands in my y fronts so something must have happened.
Zidane - 5/10 i dont really like football but this was still alright. bit arty farty. nice score by mogwai.
The Illusionist - 5/10 what the hell is with all the different appalling accents?
Executive Decision - 7/10 i was ready to give this a 3 at best but then Steven Seagal died. i turned it off safe in the knowledge that watching any further would only sour my experience of the film.

I finally caught up on Leone: A Fistful of Dollars - 9/10 For a Few Dollars More - 10/10 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - 10/10 A Fistful of Dynamite - 8/10 - A bit too epic Once Upon a Time In the West - 9/10 Once Upon a Time in America - 8/10 - Wants to achieve too much and the result is just good
Also: Babel - 6/10 - When I noticed that it's Inarritu's movie, everything started to make sense. It's his best I think, though still a piece of incoherent turd.
Paris, je t'aime - 7/10 - Quite uneven. I especially liked Coen's short-feature and maybe the first one. I also didn't mind Chomet's excerpt.

Stranger Than Fiction 3/5
Interesting premise lost in execution. Too clean and cuddly for my taste. The mood in this film reminds me of Frank Capra's American hyper-optimism. There's a place for optimism, but this film is lackluster in its attempts to wrap the story up in some grand finale. And Will Ferrell is still a mediocre actor at best.

To be fair, I did enjoy that early bathroom scene, and those blatant in-your-face innuendos in the death scenes about what a long, hefty throbbing piece of meat might "stand for" or "represent". I give you a hint, it's something boys have and girls suck (and I'm not talking of toes).
Actually what I thought - and this might be weird - was that it played out more like Airplane III than anything else, more than Con Air or even Anaconda. Well, at least it was an original screenplay, and not yet another Asian cinema rip-off (*cough* Scorsese *cough). But if originality means THIS, then, jesus fuck...

i really enjoyed that one. Lee Marvin really makes the movie though. I love how all the kids in the movie respond to him. in fact, based on his performance in that, i've recently picked up Hell in the Pacific. This is a WWII movie about him and toshiro mifune stranded on an island. i'm quite excited to watch it.

hmm what have i watched lately...
The Prestige - 4/5 really enjoyed this one. of course the "twist" was pretty obvious, so much that i think it was intentionally transparent. but i like how the film itself performs a bit of slight of hand on the audience, with it's other "twist" or final revelation.
Children of Men - 4/5 also really enjoyed this one. the handheld camera style really helps to emerse you in it. Clive Owen is good and Michael Caine is excellent. I like this vision of a dystopian society in the very near future. maybe too near but not really that much of a stretch..? I like the little theme of Faith vs Chance but not necessarily in a religous way.
Borat - 3/5 funny, but not necessarily anything new.
Jackass Number Two - 3/5 funny, but not necessarily anything new.
Extras, Season 1 - 4/5 gah haha. so good. Kate Winslet and Ben Stiller were probably my favorite episodes.
Saw - 4/5 i didn't expect to like this one as much as i did. clever, fairly campy, bloody. it really gives on so many levels. makes me want to watch II and III
Marie Antoinette - 4/5 also liked this far more than i thought i would. probably the only teen coming of age, party movie i've ever seen set in the victorian age.
Science of Sleep - 3/5 disappointing. i realize this is because the main character is so unlikable. but i also realize he is unlikable because he is half asleep most of the time and thus not subject to the social restraints he might otherwise exhibit if he were not half dreaming. wtf did i just say?
United 93 - 4/5 very engaging while remaining tasteful. but the sense of impending doom was almost too much for me. i got pretty frustrated and emotional while watching it. great movie that i will probably never watch again.
Superman (2006) - 3/5 pretty good other than all the actors except Spacy were too young. not bad for a superhero movie.
The Departed - 4/5 not Scorsese's best but certainly not his worst. quite enjoyable. Crapio finally getting some c

-good roles.
Lady in the Water - 2/5 this was really quite laughably awful. like really bad. bad and stupid.
Wolf Creek - 4/5 this gets a lot of negative reviews. I thought it was brutally real and cringingly violent. I really didn't know anything about it prior to watching it, actually thought it was supposed to be a werewolf movie lol. i was pleasantly surprised. well, not "pleasantly" i guess. it is as harsh as it sets out to be.
Pirates of the Carribean - 2/5 guh, crappy. i guess i shouldn't have expected much for the sequal of a movie based on an amusement park ride. oh it's a trilogy? yawn.
The Descent - 3/5 yippee, them gets all eaten up by creepy naked cave dudes. Like a cross between deliverance and Alien. i personally thought this movie was a bit overrated. still good though.
The Devil Wears Prada - 3/5 hey i have a wife who's "in the biz" so i had to watch it. it really wasn't as bad as i expected though it was damn predictable.
Scanner Darkley 4/5 - much better on repeated viewings. lots of snappy dialogue. i also really dig the concept of seeing the future and it looks like just next year or something.
that's about it i guess

something interesting i've read about Hell in the Pacific is that it is not subtitled. That is, Marvin speaks English while Mifune speaks japanese and neither can understand the other. This movie probably plays differently to japanese audiences as a result.
yes, i'm looking forward to watching this one this weekend.
