The Decalogue I - 4/5 I finally got around to getting my hands on these 10 short films of Krzysztof Kieslowski and have finished watching the first one. ...a simple story with no fancy camera work or cinematography...really a beautiful piece of story telling done with with a lack of overdramatizing or a ton of sentimentalism. Through this simple story telling we (well, I...) are able to feel the religiousness that is attempted at being communicated and not to be preached it. Most religious movies are overtly so and are inane because they're playing on the level of "God is real" and here's the movie about it. Doing this seems to quell the human aspect, the emotion...or something... But anyway, this film isn't completely devoid of visual stimulation, it's just that the images need the emotional impact of the story to mean more than just a tricky angel or clever dolly shot. One scene involves the removing of bodies from a lake. As onlookers gaze upon the situation, they fall to their knees in prayer (i think it was prayer) leaving one man standing. That image, I think, does more than most of the creative camera work I've seen lately. Then there's another scene involving the same man where he throws a tantrum at a church causing a candle to tip over spilling liquid wax on to a visuage of the Virgin Mary (I think it was her, or maybe Jesus) causing her to "cry". In other movies this would have been the turning point in the story, but here, maybe it's something the man doesn't even see. But the viewer does. Really a great short film, can't wait to watch the rest of them. |

Blood Diamond - 3.5/5 - Looks like it gives a good picture of the hell-hole that's called Sierra Leone. Although great efforts by Caprio and Connelly, Caprio's South African accent just gets annoying after a while, and Connelly..well, as much as I love to see her on the big screen, she was just badly casted. Women like Connelly just can not survive for a single week in a shithole like Sierra Leone on their own. No matter how good her acting is. |

The Lost City - 2/5 - Big load of Garcia selfwank-fest. I couldn't bare to watch longer than 30 mins. There was one memorable scene though. The scene with Garcia, Bill Murray and Dustin Hoffman. It looked like a bit of high-quality improv. Murray was a mute comedian playing Garcia's guard - or the other way around - and Hoffman a misplaced mob chief. Excellent! |

Children of Men – 3/5 One could call this “How America Caused the Human Race to Stop Reproducing”; might as well, since all the subtlety in this movie blames America for everything else. I suppose this Mexican director would prefer open boarders as opposed to a country trying to maintain its sovereignty. What a fucking jackass. His use of illegal immigrates (at least he called them illegal) and their deportation as a thematic device came off heavy-handed and quite literally laughable. But I didn’t laugh when he implied that the American government was directly responsible for the 9/11 attacks on its self. Fucking jackass. I also felt embarrassed for the director more than anything else with his childish attempt at reproducing Guantanamo with such a thin veil—yes, you did see a particular picture leaked from that prison camp duplicated exactly the same in this movie. Stupid. And having “Homeland Security” at the top of the gates to the prison camp was just as lame. There was so much in this movie that strove to make points, but all so awkwardly. But the director does succeed on some emotional levels. There are a handful of scenes that strike one as being “emotionally real” and add so much to this film. After Clive Owen’s wife is killed he walks away to clear his mind with drink and smoke then the gravity, the realization of his loss hits him hard and takes him down to the ground in tears. That particular scene was brilliantly acted by Owen. Heck, he’s the only one who gives any kind of interesting performance in this picture. But in the end I found myself not caring for any of the characters, even the child. Not a single character has any depth, there’s nothing in them to care about. What is cared about, and how the film finds any kind of success is “what will happen”—“scenes” are what I found myself caring about. Specific scenes and their outcomes held more weight than any character including the story. This movie is not sci-fi; it is merely a suspense picture. Nothing is revelatory. Nothing matters. Having a replicant on a roof in the rain deliver the line, “All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain” has more emotional impact than anything in this movie in part or in whole. That movie was brilliant, Children of Men is just a good popcorn flick, a really good popcorn flick. I also like the way the underground resistance was portrayed. Relatively realistic, I like to say. THE UPRISING Oh no. they have a slogan, too! In the end of the day they are just opportunistic thugs trading in ideological vagaries. They blow shit up and carry guns and act like they are a part of something that’s of the moment and therefore important. Quite like their real world counter parts. All in all, I suppose this is a decent movie to spend $5 on. Oh wait, it was far better than The Fountain, though. That movie was just over-hyped self-indulgence. |

I remember when I use to post to a "Classical music" board MANY years ago in my late teens/early twenties using, of all things, Web TV, there use to be talk of an option called "kill file". It gave the ability to eliminate the presence of certain posters one wished not to be bothered by. I always thought that such an option wasn't necessary if one really didn't want to bother or reply to certain posters. As is now, I don't need a "kill file" option, I have the ability to absolutely ignore and NEVER reply to whom ever I chose. So, for what I'm guessing is a first reply is also an absolute last reply to whom ever it is a couple posts above me, spouting such garbage and stupidity. IE was a good movie. It was far from a "perfect" movie and I don't know how it will hold up for me with time, but a 5/5 cinema experience nonetheless. The digital picture worked for it and the Angelo Badalamenti soundtrack I surprisingly didn't miss. Although it didn't follow up M Drive's emotional power for me, a favorite of mine, it's lightyears ahead of it in the way it compressed so many more ideas. Although Lynch's visuals and style are always great, only his best stuff forces me to take a closer look. Lynch hits (5/5): Eraserhead, Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire. The rest are entertaining misses, except Straight Story, which is a good movie but one I rarely think about. Discreet Charm of the Boouge - 3.5/5? was a disappointment after waiting so long to see it. Bunuel's earlier stuff is supposed to be better I guess. I watched the first 5 minutes of The Queen but was stoned and it made me angry for some reason so I turned it off. I should really finish it. |
