wow you got to be kiddin me...
Didn't you find the plot totally stupid ??? I mean it's an
organisation searching for martyrs.... I mean come on !
Plus the "violent-gore" scenes aren't so violent nor gore.
A real deception.

Well maybe I could give it 4/5 (I rated it 9/10 on IMDB),
but I wanted to provide nice contrast to your low opinion of
this movie. I thought it was a very fresh take on the genre.
It managed to complete surprise me by the unpredictable plot
twists, not once, but at least twice. Seeing it on the big
screen made a lasting impact. The use of sound and visual
tricks in the movie is really clever at parts. More than
that, I thought the plot, although maybe far-fetched, was
very provocative and unconventional. And like I said, the
film constantly surprises the viewer by adding another layer
to the story. This film is like shock therapy, and I thought
all the violence and stuff was there for a reason, unlike in
many popular gore movies like Saw or Hostel. It has a nice
sense of intimacy and flow, like everything is unfolding
right in front of your eyes. It almost feels like a theatre
play, with all the different actors coming in and out of
view.

I can see this film as something that will leave people
either completely cold or very happy. I guess I'm in the
latter camp. I took the film seriously, maybe too seriously,
but it's very rare for a horror-gore film to have that kind
of effect.

What I most liked about it was the unconventionality and
surprising elements in the narrative of the film, and the
way it infuses spirituality and much-needed "fresh blood"
into a worn genre.

I thought all the ridiculous plot parts were hilarious!

If you think the film wasn't violent enough for you, well, I
have a few snuff films to sell you...

iria - zeiram the animation 8/10
this early 90´s animated 6ep animation has some nice
characters. the balance between fun and serious story
is well balanced. and! the action is fully animated
and not just still people flying around (big point in my
eyes)
good stuff!

Ok. Well the part with the old lady is where I totally lost
it when she gives all the explanation on the martyrs. I've
seriously never seen a plot twist that radically stupid
where you find it "hilarious". Plus I forgot to say the
acting was soooo bad. I mean maybe you've seen it in english
and they did a good job on the voices but in french they
just play like in a low budget TV-movie... That's a constant
problem with french actors acting. And please tell me what
you found really violent ? The tortures scenes resume to one
guy beating up the lady (and mostly seen from behind...) and
force-feeding her. Then what ? they remove her skin (you
don't see it neither). The only "decent" part is the murder
of the family at the beginning, but then the acting is so
terrible.

well, maybe my poor understanding of French prevented me
from making some critical observations... But anyway, it
wasn't so much the narrative story that interested me, but
the way scenes and events and characters flowed into each
other moment by moment... There was so much I didn't expect.
The grandma Nazi stuff, of course, was highly ridiculous,
but I sincerely applaud the whole direction the film takes
towards the end, it's just so outrageous and weird and
unexpected.

In OTHER news, I just saw Satoshi Kon, the director of
Paprika and Millennium Actress, answer audience's questions
here in Helsinki. They also screened those two movies, but
I'd seen them before so I didn't stick around, although I
love them both. Then they also showed the first episode of
Paranoia Agent, which was gripping enough to make me want to
see the rest of the series; and a 2-minute short called
"Ohayoo" (nothing special).

Anyway, here's some interesting info to fans of anime:

- Indeed, he's working on a new anime. It won't come out any
time soon, and it doesn't have an international name yet,
but the rough translation of the working title is something
like "Robots That Dream" (sounds vaguely Philip K.
Dick-esque, no?). It wants to be something different from
his previous movies. It is suitable even for younger
audiences, although it won't exactly be a kiddies' film.
Heard it here first!

- He will continue to work with the composer Susumu
Hirasawa. Good.

- In response to my question of what are some of his own
favourite anime films or directors of recent years, he
answered very politically by saying that because of
professional rivalry issues, he didn't want to get into
choosing and picking favourites or criticizing others.

- One of his constant themes is the contrast between
"reality" and "dreams" or "illusions". He said that today's
society doesn't want to deal with things like dreams, but
that life is often controlled by these more subtle aspects
of consciousness.

/End of report!

I really hope I feel differently about this movie. I
thought Casino Royale was a great reset for the series. I
was worried about it being a Goldeneye, though. Goldeneye
was a pretty good one and showed promise for Pierce, but
then the rest were kinda crap for the most part.

Diamonds are Forever, really? That was probably the
cheekiest Connery one that I can remember.

really? yeah i despise saw and can't believe things like
this don't do a lil better, but it's definitely no more than
a 6/7 at most. the whole thing was enjoyable enough but not
great, non of it was doing anything new. the end felt like
an excuse for a dramatic conclusion. i liked it enough i
just wouldn't really be interested in watching again.

yeah i kind of agree, i watched it a second time and it
didn't have the same impact, i think the ending ramped up my

Alot of people complain about the fact that Mel Gibson's a
rather conservative christian, and has apparantly said some
bad things in the past. Some complain that it's (the film)
too violent.

But both points are, I find, beside the point. What we have
here, in Apocalypto, is a great adventure film, that is
violent, yes, but that's for the sake of the film, and not
mere sensationalism. The cinematography's gorgeous, it has
great acting, and like in The Passion of the Christ (in
which they speak Aramic), they speak Mayan through the whole
film. No silly broken english!

If you want a powerful cinematic experience that feels real,
I'd really suggest to you to see it, pantalaimon.

God! I never should have paid to see that. I have many
questions but the film was so pointless I hardly care to
have them answered. What was with the nauseating closeups
and crazy editing in the action sequences? Did Michael Bay
change his name to Marc Forster without telling anyone?
fucking Quagmire of Salisbury. I immediately watched 'From

out of my mouth.

i'm sorry, i forgot that you care so much about my ratings.

i will try harder to find faults in these films i happened
to massively enjoy.

the fact that ive seen a number of outstanding films
recently doesn't mean the next few must now by law be
disappointing.

where do i go from here? ive yet to see JFK and Nixon so
maybe those are up soon.
