past year or two i have found myself evaluating my
harshness on people. for whatever. and why? i realize i just
kind of picked it up from the internet. but i just read this
amazing article:

LAZY_TITLE

...and i'm realizing the internet picked it up from steve
albini. who picked it up from punk:

“I thought it was important to explain how some of the
uglier and more confrontational aspects of my speech and
behaviour came about,” he said

...

in an ecosystem where shit-talking was seen as a sign of
obstinate authenticity

...but then we get to:

Kim Deal told me that Albini’s wife, the filmmaker
Heather Whinna, whom he met in the 1990s, was a crucial
influence. “She told him specifically: ‘I don’t think
you know the power that you have when you just dismiss
people. They really respect you, Steve, and why would you do
that to them?’ I don’t think he understood that people
were actually listening to him.”

i have been considering my tone over the last few months.
like, blackbox thread: "why am i being so harsh," i thought?
feeling bad, i came back and put myself in my own place,
saying, effectively, "...while i'm expressing my honest
feelings here i also feel nothing i've ever done touches
some of the tracks off drukqs"

...as if that'd smooth over the nerves i grated being...
obstinately authentic.

that my dub plates thing, a couple weeks back, i thought:
"this is punk. this a punk thing to do. to piss people off,
to tear down the ivory towers. to shit on vinyl-humping
idiots. i actually have a very punk attitude, how did this
happen? i was never a part of this scene" but then "i should
still stop being so brutal because it doesn't help anyone"

...and, it's funny, i was having these same conversations
with myself along with albini

...remember when i was being cheeky and ribbing y'all for
implicitly assuming woke-ness was owned by black people
since you declared "let the wokie win" racially offensive?

here's albini:

“However you define ‘woke,’ anti-woke means being a
cunt who wants to indulge bigots,” he wrote recently

...and, fuck me, that's so much more delicious than what i
was saying. so much more succinct. direct

the article continues,

"..but these days he also says things like: “Life is
hard on everybody and there’s no excuse for making it
harder. I’ve got the easiest job on earth, I’m a
straight white dude, fuck me if I can’t make space for
everybody else."

...so i guess that includes making space for the anti-woke
bigot-indulgers?

don't soften too much, steve. the world does need at least
some world-destroying acerbity

in the end

- i've already tried to tone it down a bit
- it comes from "obstinate authenticity"
- ...which i have no hesitation about applying to myself
- [...what's good for the gander is good for The Goose
Brand™]
- i actually do get genuinely mad at stupid people -- or
people being cattle, whatever -- and that's where it can go
over the line, i think steve has the same problem

Component A ~ being a cunt is a way to speak with authority.
it implies you know exactly what you're talking about; that
you're so certain of your principles you've no care for what
bridges you burn [and/or you're so committed to your
principles; you're such a purist you don't care how much of
a cunt you're being].

Component B ~ being funny is a way to get away with being a
cunt

...but then Albini became famous for it because he was so
incredibly, deliciously right
so many times [e.g. the
"woke" comment] and he has a whole body of work backing up
his mouth.

i can't be bothered to read it really

i'll just say, let me know if it's something the article
says as well: it's striking, to me, that privileged groups,
like white, cishet males (strike through what isn't
relevant) can do whatever and not get canceled. everyone
else can't
(to be sure: i'm pretty privileged. i just have to point out
this stuff, because there's so much ignorance of it)

if you're privileged the punk thing to do is be kind. if
you're not privileged the punk thing to do is kick against
the machine

of course everyone is part privileged and part not. so you
can do both, depending on situations. if you have a minority
opinion, you can put that out there harshly. if you're a man
and have trouble adjusting to that your bathroom is now
gender neutral, don't bother other people with it

i've now read what epic wrote.

...but did you process how steve albini took A WHOLE
EPICMEGATRAX THREAD -- one that people actually participated
in -- and compressed it down into:

“However you define ‘woke,’ anti-woke means being a
cunt who wants to indulge bigots,” he wrote recently

instead i came about this in such a roundabout way:
0) hi!
1) my lizard brain spews out word jokes all day
2) it's learned i send offensive/racial ones back to the
kitchen
3) it wasn't sure if i'd like "let the wokie win"
4) i understand why it was confused. it felt absolutely
offensive, but... hm
5) it dawns on me you have to effectively treat "woke" and
"black" as synonyms in order to find 3) offensive
6) i make a thread asking what people think
7) recycle, bless him, posts the first thing that comes to
mind with zero thought, and confirms: yes this is offensive

then i'm all "lol, that means you're subconsciously racist"
or something dumb. i was not trying to actually call anyone
racist so much as trying to show everyone a darn fine
example of how subconscious assumptions shape your conscious
thought ...and the hell does woke mean, anyways?

so when albini comes along and 'however you define woke,
anti-woke means a cunt who wants to indulge bigots'

i'm going to remember this one. i need to learn to fight my
way out of these corners better

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2023-08-19 21:23 [#02629917]

main point, i suppose: i've soaked up a lot of albini's
attitude without even realizing. osmosis through the
internet.

a few weeks ago: i'm being a cunt with a brutal takedown
throw; but why? when did this get so automatic? why am i
even doing this?

i concluded punk, plus [#02629894, #02629895] above

...but it wasn't until this article came out that i realized
it was actually albini's voice. and the article is about
"hi, yeah, this got too automatic, i'm tearing a bunch of it
out of my 'tude now, sorry" and how strange i've been so in
parallel without even realizing it's all. his. fault ;)

what you think are the right things, may not actually be the
right things -- especially once you get a bit older. one day
realizing you feel both guilty and embarrassed for something
you wrote the other day.

something completely honest, but utterly unwarranted. you
think: "what was the point of that? ...it was way too
reflexive. a useless peacock tail of a thing to post"

i wonder if it bugs albini if anyone ever credits his change
in attitude to him "mellowing out" or worse, "softening up"
because it's very very hard to unyieldingly examine who you
are

...and then decide to edit your personality at the age of
[difficult past 25], disown a bunch of your past behavior as
ill-advised, sheltered, etc. and then go speak about it
publicly in an almost embarrassingly earnest manner. because
it's actually a rippling effect across the web of musicians
on the internet

if it's the former, just be yourself, no one can beat you

when some stupid motherfucker tells you that you cant wear
your hair in dreads because you have the wrong amount of
melanin in your skin pigments...

it's worth it to call them, and their whole movement out as
the dogshit it is.

the only reason they reframe you as a bad person for not
getting in line, is because that's all they really CAN say.
It doesn't make you an asshole.

The way you talk to an individual in a condescending way
CAN, however.

I realized a long time ago that "this person is an asshole"
is a subjective statement anyway.

For some people, not viewing the world through their
quasi-marxist equity based prism of social oppression is
QUITE enough to label you a piece of shit. I don't care.

For me, assholes are the people who don't hold the door open
for the next guy coming in behind them. Assholes are the
people that don't return a small nod on the street. Assholes
find a wallet outside the grocery store and keep it, rather
than handing it in the store.

It's subjective and your mileage may vary.

the thing with cultural appropiation is people are just
saying others are just being kind of a dick. because they're
disrespecting other cultures, while culture is important to
people. the people that are told this, though, feel totally
like the victim.

dude saying you can or cant do something
or dress a certain way
or have a certain attitude
***because of the color of your skin***

is literally racist. You can redefine the word racism to
suit your world view all you want. I reject your
redefinition. It's a very simple equation.

This is not the only case where progressives do this either.

I think sometimes racism is a boogeyman, its just basic
collectivist *group think* garbage that gets overplayed as
the worst of all human's ills.

What bothers me more is just the hypocrisy of the people
that call out others for this kinda shit. The assumption of
virtue, and the labeling of those who disagree as a bigot.

you can label me ignorant, I could label you racist. I don't
think anything of this is helpful.

I'll watch the video, but unless it says "It is racist to to
try and pressure someone to do or not do something because
of the color of the skin,"

I will write it off as completely antithetical to my world
view. Every single human is the god damn same fundamentally,
and these little cultures we form are far from sacred to me.
All of them, including my own.

I do not not subscribe to "racism is only racism in certain
power structure scenarios," which is always the crux of the
argument. It's ridiculous.

i'll just go into, concerning some of the things epic
writes: it interests me how people change their mind. it's a
bit like how i write i'll read this when i'm in the right
mind set, because people are very hard headed, and they'll
have to hear just the right thing at just the right right
time. and here i gotta bring up privilege again, i'm afraid:
if someone is a minority in just one respect, they'll be
loads less hard headed (though also they can dig themselves
in deeper, look at JK Rowling, for instance)

I'll just say this man,

I'm not at all averse to changing my mind. There's a lot of
obstinate assholes across the gamut of worldviews.

I've done a lot of pyschedelics and peeled and probed my
viewpoints trying to filter the bullshit and in doing so I
did hit some bedrock. I'm just an individualist. It's my
basic, most foremost setting and I don't think I'm capable
of ever changing that.

I have never, in my life, felt I belonged to any group at
any time. Even here, lol.

I'm not averse to changing my mind, but I can only take it
so far. Aight time for a little Path of Exile before bed ;)

you're complaining about labels yet you can only think in
terms of labels when you write:
"I do not not subscribe to "racism is only racism in
certain
power structure scenarios," which is always the crux of the
argument. It's ridiculous."

this argument is true. but it's not meant as an 'own' or
something, it puts racism in the context of a society.
that's useful, if only because people get hurt from
institutional racism at least as much as from interpersonal
racism, the last one the only one being you want to believe
in, it seems

i don't know what to tell you: listen to black people and
people or colour, as well as anyone that's antiracist.
they're not antiracist for wanting to feel better than you,
or something, they want to change society for the better

believe that people (individuals) experience totally

this is the one example where absolutely none of that
context is needed.

There's an action involved. That action is telling another
human being

You don't belong in group X because you are group Y

Where Y is based on an immutable trait. There is no
convincing me otherwise on this particular topic. It's
fundamentally, CORE racist. Ive said what I can say here. I

There's a huge amount of cause and effect and historical

to waggle your finger at someone and say you can't be such
and such. Misses it TOTALLY.
