what is most fascinating to me -- if i understand correctly -- is how spoken chinese has been incredibly fluid for thousands of years, while written chinese has been incredibly unchanged for thousands of years. that someone could read something from 1000 years ago like a magazine... but talking with someone then? no hope. or even same time, 1000 miles away? no hope and that's why written language, they did: logistics. inventory and troop movements and whatever, it's all unchanged for thousands of years. and the council, the ten or so dark figures actually in charge, i just read: they do everything in writing. memos are bubbled up from the little people (you can get paid a year's salary or such if one of yours makes it that far!) and then ten people atop write notes in the margins, then pooh bear farts his [dis]approval all over the page, and boom, chinese policy. all in writing. unlike english, where the letters are based on sounds, chinese is based on characters. there are thousands, and they are all interrelated, and, essentially... forcing you to think in a particular way, i imagine. like 3000 years ago but maybe having the spoken end remaining fluid... who knows. odd bastards |

im really worried about the state this country is in. it makes me want to boycot its products and culture. what i find most difficult is how news like that alters the way i look at chinese people in my home town by now. sometimes i wonder if they are rich students by families doing bad stuff over there or if they might be dissidents or in disapproval of their country´s politics having moved away or if they dont care at all and just pursue their lives whatever way they can. i dont know these people and i seemingly never will. about 6 -7 years ago my wifes former house had apartments hosting 2 young chinese couples working at the institute for technology. who were the most shut people i have ever seen. while every other person in that place got into contact with us they barely greeted back, rather looked down when meeting in the staircase and were absolutley impossible to get in conversation with. even when one of them moved from her house into mine, which is a funny coincidence, you couldnt use that to pick up a conversation over. |

which is kind of sad, cause we were really getting into studying martial arts and qigong. chinese cooking, and Traditional Chinese Medicine, eating at places that serve authentic chinese food, which now closed down. my wife even started learning chinese writing at the time and now works at a tea store. |

that being said, it always bothers me how the us army presents itself in nba games and broadcasts. honored and advertised as if they´ve never fought an unjust or at least questionable war and never committed any war crimes. and the constant singing of the anthem in non international games. wtf? well at least the followup to one of those ads was an ad by a law firm gathering victims of a health issue in certain us facilities in a law suit against the us army. you´d never see that in russia or china. |
