i bought this elektron iq fing and the manual is very
serious about how it's going to speak to you in various
fonts, and it's important you understand what.
they mean

...but where is the SD card? oh, it just has... somewhere...
cool, this will last a while. and i dunno, a year and a
half, two years, that's how long it took me to fill it up,
never deleting anything, loads of ill-advised samples i
never used etc

kudos; this is how you build a machine. with that, and
proper mechanical. there's a cypress hill joke in these
buttons

but i think i need to dump it to the computer and clear it
out, now, and remember what bold+italic means in the manual
again

oh I getchu. I thought it was a new Elektron thingy, like
machinedrum or monomachine. I've never used them but
autechre did on untilted and quaristice so I've been
somewhat interested.

so i would just, i dunno, kind of like to return the favors
i see here in a nerdy way. like, just communicate that i
don't just like this machine a lot, i see the engineering in
here.

in particular, you can't make everything gravy, no matter
how good you are. that, at a certain point, all you can do
is strongly nudge the energies in the right direction and
pray.

case in point ~ tonight, my situation. i've gotten some
strange error -- rare UI miss; have to say. i shrug and
decide to use existing samples; forget it (see last album
posted).

later,i've struck gold in a podcast that's like two solid
minutes of brits saying silly crap, and i'm about to start
grabbing it, when i remember the error, and it's kind of
like -- my brain was busy before, when i was doing a track,
but now, before i'm into it: ohhh yeah the memory is full

so i go full idiot; i just plug it into the computer. it
handshakes; but it's not a usb drive or whatnot. scour the
internet and download elektronsfer; ok.

it transfers half a project before screaming at me to
upgrade my OS because this could corrupt my samples. eesh,
dicey. i'd rather back it up first, right?

but then i just drag the firmware update into elektronsfer
and it takes... less than five seconds before it's all
"please restart me," ui hit.

now it's gurning along copying months of samples.

that, ostensibly, i am a software engineer, and my feel is:
you stopped me and screamed at me to upgrade the firmware
before i broke something. i did so and it was like... well,
i clenched my anus for nothing! and i respect that trying to
mash an old OS through the current client could lead to
tears, and, like, as i started off with -- you can't always
make everything gravy. this situation had to be at least
somewhat messy. that contrary for screaming about what mess
there was, deepest praise for how much there could have been
that i never saw

please send in a small crack team from elektron to arturia
because someone needs to whip the keystep pro software into
shape

oh, less good: it's locked up twice, both the PC app and the
digitakt

but everything else so smooth i'm inclined to blame myself,
along with... freaking USB type-b on gear; cables for an 8mp
digital camera have gotten mixed up with the proper new
ones. so i honestly suspect... i'll find a proper cable

also i simultaneously love you and hate you for turning the
naming facility into a tetris game with swedish characters.
my names for things were bad enough already

that, fucking hell. what actually seems to be happening is
that i leave it happily transferring and go off to do some
squats and smoke a zig and something something powersaving
and windows suspends USB and everything hangs. despite the
fucker being permanently docked and me having done my best
to disable all that, we have to suspect USB because power
matters on a laptop!

i doubt anyone is listening, but this is a prime nexus: i
would never expect arturia to support linux, but please,
elektron, i think you actually have the marbles to do so?
please help me get da. fuk. away. from windows. OSX half the
bullshit for ten times the price; but still bull fov hish

digitakt was locking up because

that i have to click into power settings, then, no, the
other power settings, then advanced power settings, then
really advanced power settings, and no one would ever do
this except if they know what i know: this fucking shit is
buried behind a million crap tree views somewhere.

then i find it, and it's like: "selective USB suspend,
enabled/disabled?" and the way it's written it's utterly
unclear if setting this to "disabled" means "disable this
fucking crap-ass power management that is fucking my shit
up" or simply "just shut USB off"

so i just set it to "disabled" as the elektron is copying my
projects, and... it doesn't die. in fact it speeds up

fucking. windows

there is literally an "internet explorer" section in this
power management policy nightmare tree, and the only item is
like "javascript timer" and at first i'm like "USE AS LITTLE
POWER AS NECESSARY" but then i'm realizing this might
actually be a setting that harks back to when windows
explorer and internet explorer were shotgun wed and this
literally might slow file browsing down if i throttle it

fucking. windows

i was all happy about this being smooth, but now i've put in
a nice new USB cable, i've bludgeoned the depths of windows,
and it's still dying on transferring especially large
projects. that i started poking the digitakt to see if it's
still alive, and... it's clearly, like, sweating, lagging
the fuck out. that i tap 3 to play some silly sample and...
has it hung? no, not quite; it gets to it like ten seconds
later. again, clearly sweating. then projects around over 50
megs i guess it just shits out

i think it's a jinx for me to do anything other than
complain

aaah. AAAH. dfjgkd

i think... this is emulated sysex over USB? and i've just
left the keystep pro churning around, and it probably has
some sort of shared consolidation layer for all of the midi
shit, and... soon as i press stop on the keystep pro; it no
longer has to midi thru, process triggers, all that, and
seems to do a lot better

and i thought it was just the yamaha dx200 that did that

so tldr ~

digitakt is very well designed, especially appreciate the
desktop software playing nursemaid and guiding me to upgrade
before i broke anything. but budgets are budgets and
whatever SOC in there simply can't handle me running MIDI
through it, at the rate i employ MIDI, and still reliably
transfer files without crapping out, because [speculation]
something something realtime OS and it's baked in that
everything has to get resolved within certain time quantums
or otherwise.... well, i heard you could get some wicked
noise out of the OS9 task scheduler if you ducked out of
your music app and deliberately sucked the CPU away; pre-X
macOS was never designed to multitask at. all

digitakt probably has a better CPU than OS9 ever saw, but
it... still lags out and hangs if you try to back up 50mb
projects while a keystep pro is blasting four channels of
midi spam into it, triggers, out thru. it's amazing for what
it costs, even though it's expensive, and i'm sure they
could get over this issue but they can't have it costing
$8000 instead of $800

conclusion: it took some thoughtful marbles, but this is
still entirely my fault.
