so i recorded space paranoids ii in 2011 after hallucinating a
song in the wind chimes on the porch. that i am literally
counting the beats, and like, the prophet VS arp will
remember up to a 120 notes and i'm trying to guess how many
i need in my midi feedback loop so it matches the wind
chimes. then, after a bit, alright, i think i have it, time
to go to work, and i about got it.

recently i've finally heard wind chimes by the Brian
Wilson, and immediately i am all: he was hallucinating a
song in wind chimes too! then that part where it spikes up
in the breeze... shit, that sounds exactly like space
paranoids for precisely one bar

so i'm still arguing with myself about it, but that's
roughly the sync point, and yes, these aren't quite the
same... brian did wind chimes late afternoon; mine are late
nite. disagrees a little there. but the drums, the rhythms,
then when i actually drop in my casio wind chimes... yow,
weird.

that i may be able to line it up better. i've done some eq
and i have to go listen to it out on cans on a walk to see
how i've done

nevermind happy enough w/ sync + eq

just need to duck a moment of me out where it goes too
minor, and a bit of brian out where it goes too major.

but already good enough that i'd rather listen to this than
either song. which was not even something i was trying for;
i just wanted to see if i was actually right

i feel like i just walked into brian wilson's session and
added a drum machine, casio wind chimes, synth

emphasize this is just like playing two tapes at once and
merely adjusting the equalizer on both tape, then pressing
play at the right time(s) -- wind chimes and space paranoids
ii

i'm glad someone's responded that they like it because i've
been feeling a bit insane about it. like, fuck fuck fuck, am
i nuts here? i don't think i am. but wow

slightly too much high-end on space paranoids. maybe cut too
much bass as well. but you can still hear the kick and i
like brian's organ cutting through the floorboards. i want
to duck out space paranoids ii around "...down my cheek"
along with the rest of brian's trax. maybe, maybe, i cut too
much of the foley room freqs out of wind chimes but i needed
those ok

generally still happy with mix tho

LAZY_TITLE

fuck it let the bass out to play
but still turn down the high-end... in... that spot
and fix the part where a tear rolls down brian's cheek

or trying. so you click the link and it says "this has be
delete" but then when i go to upload it's "the link is in
use pick another"

pick your nose. this better not be another guise to juice me
for cash. by deleting my tracks and reuploading i shake off
bots like ticks

got flac. nice brian but it does lean heavily on his vox, no
bad thing i guess. respectful yet kind of extraneous noise

but, yes, was hallucinating a song in the wind chimes on the
porch, then compulsively counting the beats so i knew how
many notes to set the VS arp to... because i'd decided that
was the way to do this riddim; clearly... and i do recall it
was a prime number. so i'd have to be 111, 113, 117,
thereabouts. that essentially the notes go out of the VS and
then with a bit of midi lag, right back into it, and you can
doodle in a couple notes as a seed and it builds a mandala
until it fills up the note limit you've set. and it was
about how to get it spinning just right. i went downstairs
and i'd effectively nailed the note count -- i tried around
a bit and nothing was anywhere near as good -- then just
kind of filled it in. that the VS arp is not clocked either,
i think it's just by ear for a sort of generator feeling

so that i made the song like this, and it's perfectly in
sync with brian wilson's song he hallucinated in wind
chimes, we both thought very hard about the same problem and
came up with compatible solutions

i'm realizing it probably is a lot more significant to me
personally than anyone else, really. especially as i can
hear the bits that...

...like, oh, after it cuts out, "...rolls down my cheek" and
there's a pause, listen to how the wind chimes on both ends
are just this perfectly timed salad, sjdfks triiiiippy

but i guess it is kinda personal.

i had a similar thing going to sleep on a mate's sofa after
a mushroom night... the clock would produce slightly
different ticks each time, and the ambient noise from
outside would merge with it. the "melodies" it made were so
nice as i stretched my muscle groups. i was humming along
and finger-tapping whilst laughing into a cushion, wind
chimes would have blown my tiny ape brain

now imagine you've had some of this happen many times, but
you just can't quite ever nail it when you sit down with the
gear, and, alright, i am sick of this, i am getting this
one

and that's about where i was at that evening late summer
2011

also. once i lopped off most of the high-end of space
paranoids, i found some nice stuff, i didn't even notice,
like a whoooOOm of bass that's... exactly like a gust of
wind, i don't know how else to say it. and it's been there
all these years and only once i cut off all the high bleepy
is it like... that's just such a lovely bass noise. very old
skool

that brian wilson has been deaf in one ear since childhood,
spare us the comparisons, but i went right for the "mono"
remaster flac of windchimes (thank you soulseek for still
existing) over "stereo." because, what's he gonna do with
stereo, and meanwhile, space paranoids has a lot of nice,
well... space... going on, and yes, it can be like the egg
white to brian's yolk

and so that is kind of how i see this: it's like another
three or four matryoshka shells orbiting about the original
track. most of the EQing was actually clearing my noise out
of the way. as i got into above, initially i killed the bass
too, but... no, the timing of the vocals and the drums so
perfect, this is really what i'm here for, to give this
track a drum machine and some casio and just elevate it a
little.
