2010-14 or so, the hardware music i was recording, i was
using a windows XP PC with an RME Fireface 800. the rme was
utter overkill for what i did, but it sounded lovely,
latency was low.

then i had to sell the fireface off. to my frustration, i
found windows just can't fucking music without a hardware
interface and ASIO full duplex etc etc.

i'd largely moved to linux, so my win xp box went on a
shelf. i cleaned it up and it's what i've been using to
record my hardware mashes; just audacity via a soundblaster
with gold-plated connectors. it sounds alright
enough. it works as a tape recorder.

but it is sad. i have years of cubase projects, songs i
never finished.

today, i am at a swapfest. to translate for the blokes, it's
a boot sale. it's entirely focused on computers,
electronics, ham radio. there's always that guy with an
enigma machine selling t-shirts, sheesh. going on fifteen
years now

the swapfest takes over a parking garage; many floors of. i
am many levels deep, diving through forgotten technology,
when i find a pile of rack gear in a corner. usually, i
don't buy pricey things here -- just, you know, a usb cable,
some LEDs. but this thing, for whatever reason, catches my
eye.

someone else's too.

some old fart grabs the booth's proprietor and effectively
shoos me away from the stack of rack gear. how much, old
fart wants to know? oh, fifty

old fart is going to think about it. he's thinking about it
via googling it on his phone.

"how much for the tascam us-1800?" i ask. "fifty," he says.
"how about forty?" i say. "ok." he lifts the stack of rack
gear so i can extract my purchased unit. old fart is still
googling on his googlefone. "he's still thinking," i quip to
the proprietor as i make a quick exit

now, at home, i find this thing is a match made in heaven.
it does not support windows ten. winxp, however, works like
a champ. i can open up my old projects again

oh hey this thing can record audio too, i think i bought it
because of that
and it has midi

also i seem to have bought a nektar pacer off of some guy i
know and it has stuff i wasn't expecting like midi2cv and
solenoid control (?)

but the new synths i got all have usb ports and do they just
act like a generic midi device if i plug them in?

this poor old xp box is already out of usb ports though

yes ok that works super
no need to truck with midi, just plug into usb and it shows
up as... usb audio device? it'll do audio over usb 2? much
