here's one of my desktops (debian machine), currently. this
is one extreme; a wm (xfce) without any desktop icons, and
then there's my os x machine with 5 billion icons all over
it at the moment.

offline xf from Australia on 2004-05-15 07:45 [#01189466]

then this is my os x desktop, from my powerbook. it
actually isn't so bad at the moment, but that's because 4 or
5 of the folders on the desktop are 'old desktop' folders,
most with 'old desktop' subfolders. aiee!

life's easier *without* desktop icons, because it forces you
to keep things organised :-p

why don't you get some then?

there's plenty for Mac OS X, and there's probably hundreds
for whatever window manager you're using in Debian

:)

heh, do you have a serial number for that theme program for
osx, the more popular one (forget its name). there's
several out there, most of them make the system resources
fly out the window. i think there's a decent one now, the
most recent, but it's only shareware.

and yeah, i can write one for xfce (uses gtk2 for
rendering), i'm just lazy at the moment :-) had a really
neat dark gray scheme for thinice at one stage, lost it
though.

the program you're talking about i think, is ShapeShifter.

Now, up until I received my new PB17 I swore by that
program, but I have come to realise that there is a free
alternative that doesn't eat up system resources :)

it's called ThemeChanger and it is totally freeware. The
difference between ShapeShifter and ThemeChanger is that
ShapeShifter tricks the operating system into using the new
theme, it stays resident in memory (and therefore eats up
memory). While I didn't really notice any differences on my
iBook, I am always a stifler for resources!

ThemeChanger is different because it actually modifies
system files (which unless you're sure you know what you're
doing in the UNIX world, you don't wanna mess with it if it
fucks up). But I have tried it, and I am very impressed with
the level of "themeability", because sometimes ShapeShifter
doesn't theme things properly.

I have only tried ThemeChanger with an Aqua-like theme (such
as SmoothStripes 4.1.1) and would have no idea if it'd be ok
to use a black or dark style theme.

If you email me, I'm sure I can sort you out with something
;)

Email is in my profile

oh, sweet. i'll shoot you an email later, cheers :-)

i'm wanting to try 'shinobi' again
(http://izappy.web.infoseek.co.jp/themes.htm), was what I
used last time and it's a great theme, but the way I applied
it (forget, was at least a year and a half ago) made the
system slow as hell.

10.4 needs native theme support. Mind you, if I had my way,
it'd be all simplified and fonts would be *way* smaller.

bah, but the theme claims:

Download:
Mac OS X 10.3 : Shinobi v2.3[2.8MB]
ShapeShifter用GuiKit
Application Skins対応

plenty of others say they're shapeshifer guikits, too. can
themechanger use them?

(these are probably questions i should find out myself, but
hey, doesn't hurt to ask...)

no, GuiKits are only for ShapeShifter as far as i know mate

anyways, i've got a relevant code for it ;)
