I hardly see my desktop, so I don't bother trying to make it look fancy. The default Windows XP colour is nice enough, I just turn all the XP styles off and make the taskbar 2 rows high so one of them can hold a load of shit in quicklaunch, as I only have the 4 default icons on the desktop. |

for Windows i have the Windows Classic theme (then turn off the Themes service) and i used to have an extra tool bar on autohide at the top of the screen, but i don't bother with that anymore |
