Radiohead

I always thought he came off a bit coy in interviews, but
goDel is right... I already like radiohead. You probably
find the interviews annoying because you already think they
are shit. All music is pretentious if you want to look at it
like that.

Please demonstrate how all music is pretentious. I
understand this will take up the rest of your life as there
is a lot of music to get through, but I'm sure that you'll
want to back up your statement with some hard solid
evidence. Looking forward to reading your report sometime in
the next 50 years.

Plus, since you've no idea how I or Tolstoyed, for example,
came to dislike Radiohead/Thom Yorke, you shouldn't be
saying "probably", but instead, "please tell me where this
dislike stemmed from. Where you close to your mother?"

never thought i'd write this, but i'm with dannn_ on this
one. i find tolstoyed's view on radiohead arrogant and
pretentious in itself, it's all about supposing.

the music is shit? fair enough. i for one don't dislike the
music because the lead singer seems 'full of himself'.

well seeing how pretentious, besides its most commonly used
meaning of 'usually unjustified or excessive claims', also
means 'making demands of ones skill, ability or means' i
would agree with Dannn_ and say that all music, art,
literature etc is pretentious.

thank you merriam-webster online dictionary

using "pretentious" as an attack on music is mostly
completely unjustified and just plain lazy, seeing as most
people make that judgement without even having any knowledge
of what principles these people base their musical output
on. anyway, to contribute something, i'll just say oh well
and lol and teh. also, fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

pretentious:

1. full of pretense or pretension.
2. characterized by assumption of dignity or importance.
3. making an exaggerated outward show; ostentatious.

hey youre pretty annoying. pretentious is used in few
different ways... but, i mean it as in being ostentatious or
assigning yourself too much importance. You could say that
of anyone who writes songs and sings to people, or chooses
to communicate through any abstract medium. Anything in a
radiohead song that suggests they think they are more
important than any other musician is just speculation. I
dont know what your talking about with the word 'probably'
there, and I dont mind that you dont like a band i like, but
I think its daft to say you dont like it because its
pretentious, thats all. LOL?

just to clarify; i never said music was pretentious. i don't
like their music, but i find them pretentious. but i guess
it's hard to keep calm mind if you get that much attention.

Ha ha ha, a thread on a IDM message board with accusitions
of pretension. How very ironic!

Anyhow.

When I heard 'The Eraser' I realised that Thom Yorke's
contribution to the band is the reason I like Radiohead so
much. On the other hand I feel that the Eraser is missing
something ie. the other Radioheaders. I am really looking
forward to the new album (but not as much as the new Skinny
Puppy)

i would really like if you could explain what
pretentiousness of yorke has got anything to do with idm mb.
thank you.

We have all been drawn to this board because we have found
ourselves liking a genre of music that is, on the whole,
very pretentious. So for some one to rubbish other
pretentious music/artists is funny to me.

i don't find music pretentious though, just people.

True, but you must admit that there is a certain amount of
pretention that comes along with any off mainstream music
genre.

what is pretentious about radiohead? they've never claimed
that their music is the best thing ever, or that they are
gods among rockstars. what you say about interviews is
totally false, they often seem embarassed of their 'status'.
they seem like their worst critics. what they do, is music
that keeps them interested, something that i'd expect any
good artist to do, and they're not afraid to TRY either.

what the hell tolstoyed just get OK Computer, give it a GOOD
listen and get the fuck out of this thread because you dont
make any sense.

Radiohead are sooo pretentious (pick any interview with
them) but they have every right to be. If they weren't I
don't think they would have made so much cool interesting
music.

being pretentious basically means you overrate something
without merit, i don't really think they do that.

yeah kinda...

i still don't get it 010101.. where exactly is the
pretentiousness in radiohead. i interpret pretentious as
when someone INTENDS their actions to be seen as something
great. does that make sense? by my definition it would make
every human pretentious but no... lets say it better: its
the self conscious act of apparent self importance. that'd
be my definition. i don't see that in radiohead.

interviews? in all the interviews with yorke about the
eraser, he says how he didn't have any confidence in
himself, that he tought everything he did was shit, and that
how much of his work embarrasses him... anyway... stupid
debate... i'm looking forward for the next LP which for some
reason i don't think it will be very good, but i hope
they'll pull it off.

i like some of their tunes, nothing real recent, i think the
electronic stuff is real gimmicky and not in a fun way, they
have some good parts here and there though.

naive about the way you interpret his interviews. im really
not going to discuss this further because i just repeat

i have right not to like them.
