springtime epigram turned me off cause it sounds so much
like boc its almost a ripoff. both in mood and actual
technicality.
this goes for dew in mouth as well..

matthew unburduned is one of the better tracks, but to me,
this whole album isn't that good.
beneath the layers of compression, noise and sound, there
isn't all that much content.

what i mean by this is that I don't really hear many good
SONG IDEAS.

vengeance drools for instance, it sounds like prodigy, only
more compressed and louder.

it seems he has a technique that he applies on average song
ideas, and then somehow creates something that sounds new.
but if the bottom song idea isn't that good, then i'm sorry
but its only half as good as it can be.

i mean if you really listen to the tracks, there aren't that
many new ideas in rhythm and composition, nor in arrangement
or melody.

not that music that follows a certainly formula can't be
good, but in this case i feel he hasn't quite pulled it
off.
not for me anyway.

one last thing, i do appreciate what he's trying to do, but
i think he did it better on his last album.

he should just change his name (again) to "Sounds Like..."
and we can all go home.

the first track is good. the rest of the tracks aren't very
original sounding to me. i hear autechre, BOC, aphex twin,
prefuse, amon tobin... but i don't hear anything distinctly
chris clark. shit when i first listened to 'Matthew
Unburdened" i thought it was a remix of autechre's 'Vietrmx
21.' then 'Night Knuckles,' which is very pretty btw,
sounds like a slightly harsher remix of aphex's 'nannou.' i
mean i like it, but jeez, does clark even have a 'signature
sound?' or is his 'thing' is that he is a Warp doppelganger?

i think he was more distinct previously, to be honest.

anyway, my biggest problem with this album is just how loud
and void of any real dynamic it is. just sounds like it's
about the heavy production and how thumpy and obnoxious it
can be. the "ripoff" factor is so so, 99% of music is pretty
derivative anyway, and i think he's got some cunning ideas
in there on tracks like frau wav and dew in the mouth
(medulla b-side? ^_____^). it mostly sounds like empty crap,
though.

i think some of the reasons why people like it is because it
tells them something about what the music is trying to
convey.

like if i listen to a track, i can appreciate not only the
music itself, but also waht lifestyle, mood, intention etc
the track and track maker has.

it's like you are living a part of his life, or you are
transported into another world that you like, and thus you
like the music.

the music doesnt even have to be that good as long as it has
those signals.

He's one of the second generation of Warp musicians, like
Claro, who instead being influenced by Jungle, Techno,
Ambient, Hip Hop etc, is influenced by...earlier Warp
musicians.

and thinking that it was pretty unoriginal....
Nah, BOC have their own sound, they signed in '97-'98
perhaps the last of the 1st gen.

the thing is i just like to see some effort put in in terms
of songwriting.

obviously isn't :)

offline Archrival on 2006-09-05 13:25 [#01965946]

hey ,hey hes very very able to make nice nice music, dont
know why you talking about "songwriting", sounds like you
wants him to do stuff like good singer/songwriters like
that, but yeah I dont think Clark sits down and "write"
music like that...its sounds so strange, I mean the words
songwriter and Clark in the same sentence, I see CLark more
as a producer/sound explorer and making ace
tunes..songwriter, nah he doesnt make songs just phat tracks
thats it ;)

u mean like a good composition, like the way he structure
tracks and builds it up or melody changes or melodies or
what do you mean?

more like he's playing with sounds..

we can't all like same stuff so it's all good

Just so we're all "clear" (little joke for the linguists),
here's a handy Reference guide to the word Claro as
pertaining to recent techno / IDM.

Brothomsates - musician
Claro - an excellent album by Brothomstates
Claro Intelecto - musician
Neurofibro - an excellent album by Claro Intelecto

and thats for sure, and I hope I didnt write that in my
recommendation...but Its a great album and one of the best
albums so far this year.

You should have asked me mate if its as good as or even
close to TCH :D then there wouldnt have been a problem :P

This album is good but it dosent touch Clarence Park and it
dosent even come CLOSE to Empty the Bones.

Ted, however, is as good as any of the best songs on those
albums.

"Im quite chocked at the moment and havent been excited
like
this since I first heard Roygbiv back in 98."

"You should have asked me mate if its as good as or even
close to TCH :D then there wouldnt have been a problem :P "

this seems like a clash to me..like you were overexited at
first and have calmed sown after you read all the comments
by people who don't see this as particulary good release.

i have nothing personal against clark btw, it's just his
music that is dubious :)

if he reads this thread he might try and actually do
something good :-)

electronic music forums...:( yeah, I was very happy when I
heard the album and today I was amazed how goood the album
is when me and a friend (Sejd on this forum) chilled out to
it, reallly nice experience...dont take everything to
litterally...its easily one of the best albums this year,
hands down...its not better than TCH. It has some tracks
thats as good as a lot of tracks on Music Has the right or
even better than some tracks on it...whats the deal?
