How can u be that ignorant? U dont know me, and still u
tellin me that I dont know shit about math...thats just
plain stupid.

You is just a contradiction, first u tellin me that "I
understand when you say "math is the language of nature" I
can see where this tougt comes from"

Then in the other sentence "i disagree with the "language of
nature thing"... to
me the universe is made of math.... as simple as that"

Nothing really exists but pure math, I agree

All that you see/feel is a product of the rules of math. I
agree.

Chill n read Ceri JC post again.

Dont come on this topic and act like u you the ultimate
knowlegde god or something, dont diss me, build with me
insted.

I know a lot of people disagree with me on this topic but
they dont diss me like that, I want an apologize.

hey arch, i trend to agree with both you 'n OK, but yeah i
thought the same as he when reading the begining of the
topic, you say many true and important things, but some
sentences made you look like you didn't know what you were
talking about ( no offence here), but it's maybe the way you
wrote it or the way we read it ...
nonetheless music IS math...

E-man: Yeah you dont have to agree with all the stuff that
im writing, but you didnt diss me like that. It nicer to
just say that "I dont agree", dont tell me that I dont know
shit.

"OK" was sinking to the lowest level when he just spitted at
me with no respect, telling me that I dont know nothing
about math, WHO IS HE TO JUDGE ME!?!?!?. Dont get at me like
that, show a little respect.

OK, you should have realized in the beginning that you

Arch, its common for scientists to become aroused when they
notice uneducated people trying to sound like scientists.
Its probably a combination of ego and appropriation. I can
relate to how OK reacted.

That's how we get things like the KKK and fundamentalist
terrorism. I would prefer teachers as a select few.

Omneignotumus: " I would prefer teachers as a select few".
You must mean like the taliban (until recently) were.

I was particularly amused by the way (whilst pointing out I
corrected your spelling), neglected to respond to my inital
question, "Were you calling *me* an ignoramus". I also
doubt that you have any real understanding of philosphy as
that last post was completely wrong.

Archrival: You up for a tag team match against Omneignotumus

He was one of the few selected ones.

Erm, yes they were...

Taliban means "Student" in arabic, but they actually ran the
country through withholding and corrupting information. When
they were in power you could only read the official Taliban
Qu'ran, not other versions. Only specific sections were
read. Music, Tv and art were pretty much banned. They only
allowed one "questionable" radio play because there was
literally nearly a riot when they talked about taking it off
the air.

Most muslims I know think that it is easier to be a muslim
in another country as you are free to read and interpret the
Qu'ran as you like and not have it dictated to you.

The point I was making is that you seem to imply that a few
people should be in a position to educate (heirachical
rather than peer centered learning). It is this attitude
(and not the peer learning you criticised) that leads to
organisatios such as the Taliban, the Roman Catholic church
and other elitist groups who dislike FOI.

offline Omneignotumus on 2002-03-04 14:54 [#00110887]

You make assumptions about what I do and do not 'like'. I
said a 'select' few. For me, In your example I feel that the
teachers were improperly selected. I consider your example
to be in agreement with my notion that only certain
individuals should be given the privilege of teaching.

Ceri, I hadn't directed any comments toward you...you were
mistaken. The 'ignoramus' comment was made with the purpose
embracing the facetiousness of Arch whole silly rap. It was
meant as a joke.

Im not implying that there exists a better way of arranging
the education system. Im speaking entirely in an idealistic
manner.

Without disrespecting *you* personally, I find idealists
impossible people. My girlfriends was a volunteer at a
monkey sanctuary a while back and the place was really bad,
communal living really doesn't work (I know I've lived in
shared houses). They also weren't exactly chilled out, nice
people. The seemed very aggressive and argued all the time
without actually getting anything done.

As for you Arch, the bottom line is that scientists tend to
be protective of their field. Its common to get a negative
reaction when you try and use that sort of language without
having any background in it. Im confident that my assuming
that you have no educational background is correct,
especially since you announced a comparison between this
conversation and a wrestling match. People who work hard at
their education often feel annoyed when uneducated people
try and preach out of their ignorance. There are a countless
number of scientific misconceptions in pop-culture which
stem directly from foundationless preaching like yours. This
is something that makes some people upset. I would bet that
this is how OK felt.

offline Omneignotumus on 2002-03-04 15:19 [#00110942]

Taking an idealistic perspective is a conversational tool.
One who uses such a tool does not need to be an idealist.

One might argue that virtually all those who make music are
using mathematics at some level. The conscious and
intentional use of number relationships as an element music
making is cool and many artists in many genres participate.
There have been some musical projects where number
relationships have been the sole basis for entire musical
statements. I've always admired what Iannis Xenakis was
doing with it, and Gyorgy Ligeti also has some excellent
contributions to this type.

Marlowe, here is what I observed. Arch was making a display
of his 'scientific' knowledge which got a rise out of
another guy named OK, who felt that some of Arch's words
were incorrect or ignorant. I think OK, who was pursuing
education in mathematics he says, felt that Arch's vaunting
was insulting to him. Then arguement ensued from there on
out. I've been having a few minutes here and there so I've
been trying to have a hand in the fun.

Personally I think Arch went beyond the realm of 'sharing
some cool info' and into the 'Im smart and cool' area; maybe
innocently and unknowingly. This is offensive to somepeople
who actually work hard for the education behind some of
those concepts.
