The guy who called me an 'ignorant animal' is telling me to
be polite. Way to go buddy.

I agree that its common knowledge; I was tyring to
elucidate what I thought OK's position was.

Curious; what jobs do you people have that you can post on
here throughout business hours?

I think Arch's point about politeness is a valid one. You
wouldn't talk to someone like that face to face, so why hide
behind your computer and be rude?

Also "rap" tends to refer to either: A quick sharp knock
with the knuckels, rap as in hip hop or as a defamatory
remark. I'd never heard it in the context you used, so I'm
sorry if I (and I think Arch too) misunderstood you.

"You wouldn't talk to someone like that face to face, so why
hide behind your computer and be rude?" LOL I was just about
to say this :) but then I was thinking lets move on, this
discussion aint going no where.... but youre right about
that, I know that he wouldnt be rude like that in real
life.

But why act hard on the net when you can show some love
insted.

Good point about acting hard. It doesn't prove anything in
"real life", with hundreds of miles distance and anonymity
to protect you it proves even less.

Let's all play nice.

Omneignotumus on 2002-03-04 09:18:

"People who work hard at
their education often feel annoyed when uneducated people
try and preach out of their ignorance. There are a countless

number of scientific misconceptions in pop-culture which
stem directly from foundationless preaching like yours. This

is something that makes some people upset."

Nicely stated Omneignotumus. I agree that this sort of
thing happens a lot. I'm sure other people will concur.

it's fairly common for a new branch of maths and any
sciences to come from people who ertierly outside of the
mainscrean academic circles...

The self-stuidiers...somehwat akin to Bedroom Muso, who have
no need to have an real audicence....people who scerare for
their own piece of mind...

Sometimes it's takes the insight of ignorance that push &
ask difficult question without knowing how hard tha actual
problem is... These sorts of people and smooth...

I try and dig out my old programs and see if we could those
shapers further...

I also need to write some notes/dagrams on the maths as
well...could be anice gool little project...

I'd also like to do this with few others of you
here...perhpas with some music (mmm...Pansonic..)..or
something...

Just pipe dream at mo but I feel we could do this with a bit
of poking for slackers ;)...

Tech has moved on a long way and we could easily produce
some wild stuff...especially when it's linked music..

If anyone else has ideas on thes shapes etc...let kmw..I
like to heard a litte feedback...

offline OK on 2002-03-05 06:34 [#00112081]
Points: 4791 Status: Lurker

ok I'll try to ignore everything else said here... i will
not add anything else on the matter. its all clear to me. I
don't need to win any arguments... Omneignotumus's common
sense proved me right.
----

ok moving on... no matter how much I love math.. i don't
agree with the use of math consiously to create music..
because I for one when I listen for music I seek for more
than something aestethically perfect or pleasing... I look
for more than just from, I look for emotion and more things
I can't even begin to describe... and if music can be
explained with math i just don't want to hear about it. I
still want it to be magical in the way i find it magical
now... not in the way i find math magical.

Also you may've heard about music theory... what is it? it's
math! i'ts mostly based on intervals and studies othe things
also.. but in essence it's math... and guess what? if you
don't follow the rules of musical theory you can still get
good music. jazz for instance is a type of music that broke
the rules (it has rules to break the rules but that's
anotherthing). so musical theory virtually means nothing.

so summing up i have 2 points.
1) math doesn't explain a good song (if it does, and it
probably could in some way, I don't wanna know how)

and
2) music is a LOT more than math

and to end... and apology. archrrival I'm sorry.. you just
made me laugh... imagine someone that comes and tells you
that the band prodigy invented electronic music (just an
example you can imagine you own most dumb and unlikely
example)... and he speaks as if he knows all about
electronic music.

That's how I felt...
but i tell you one thing... I admire how passionate you are
about the matter even when you know nothing about it.

i notice that there are a lot of blackwhite pics on this
post. :)

i quite like the idea/implications of maths.

^archrival - re common sense - - maths is supposed to be an
"a priori" type of knowledge (ie. intuitive) opposed to
"scientific/a posteriori" knowledge. so in that sense you
are most definetly right.

i definetly find ideas about patterns in and the universe
very interesting and intriguing. but am a little sceptical -
perhaps wary would be more apt.

eg. [with reference to the movie pi] - if you look for
something you'll find it ... with maths as a presupposition
- you will find maths wherever. i mean, this is pure
speculation - and i will never "really" know - but more
importantly - as in pi - if you were to find the
patterns/understand and comprehend the syntax between the
numbers and such - and were to (by analogy) achieve self
consciousness (ie. like the computer) it becomes totally
irrelevant. it is a wild goose chase, where even the chase
is mathematically eloquent. eloquent in the sense that the
goose chase isn't irrelevant while your chasing ..

what am i saying? mmhhh.. maybe that working towards a
comprehensive understanding of the universe in terms of
maths (ie. string theory) might undermine our very
existence, and our current sense of self / being etc.

issues concerning free will etc.

infinity is a nice concept also.

zero, one and infinity actually .. :)

I'm really not so convinced that BoC is really using
mathematics to create their tracks. Or if they are, to what
extent their music is being created "normally" or to what
extent they are plugging numbers in.

If they are creating their music with math, how are they
doing it? Where are they plugging in their equations where
the melodies pop out? Does anyone know how they are doing
it? Or are we just convinced by the track names and their
word?

I think they said they tune their synths to certain
mathmatical ratios. I dont think they're using fractal
programs or anything, I think probably like in their song
structure, ie certain numbers of bars for certain tasks... I
dont know im jsut surmising. I dont think they're using math
for more than mere novelty.

Ya Taoist I agree. There is definately mathematics in
music, my brother who is a pianist has whole books talking
about the math involved in music. But consciously I don't
think BoC is doing too much more math than any of us who
makes a track with fruityloops.

When they do, its just for novelty, like you said.

I don't think there is any real deep meaning to it to be
overanalyzed. The relation between music and math, however,
is very interesting. Especially how melodies which please
the ear take on certain mathematical structures, a
connection between aesthetic appeal and math is hard to
conceive, but definately there.

I think BoC however is just trying to be mysterious, I don't
really believe there is that much math there, and I don't
believe much in the effectiveness of their subliminal
messages. Its a good joke though and it probably stirs more
hype and record sales. Plus they make great music.

offline Taoist Blockade from Wales on 2002-03-05 16:33 [#00112778]
Points: 1169 Status: Lurker

I think the way BoC present themselves has taken them a long
way towards success. If we think of AFX or Squarepusher or
Autechre or msot anyone, there isnt muc to say about them
beyond their music (you can say they're crazy or whatever,
genius, blah) but BoC have constructed this whole theme
around themselves. When yuo think of BoC you can picture a
mysterious duo hunkered down in the hills making trippy
beats, weird math formulas, childhood memories, geometric
shapes etc... they have a definite psychedelic theme they
are milking to death and I think the whole math thing they
are running with is merely an extension of that. More power
to them, I think its a great way to sell records and they
are very good at it. The only other group who I think does
just as good a job at setting up a meaningless "style
bubble" around themselves is Thievery Corporation. Anyway
jsut my view.

Ofcourse they dont always use equations or formulas when
they do music, they just stated in that interview that they
tried to do "Devils in the details" with a well know
equation (and that no one would care except them, they just
thaught that it would be funny to do that).

level of formal education, ohh my god this is so funny :)
