Unix: Less of an operating system, more of a religion. Unix
fanboys are even worse than mac ones. I've met people who
refuse to touch windows on principle, even though it's
their job
to do so. Annoying as fuck.

I don't use it, not because I can't, or because I'm stupid,
but because for 90%+ of users, myself included, it doesn't
offer any significant benefit over windows, yet has a great
many problems.

Drivers support is generally shite, it isn't anywhere near
as plug and play, good music software is almost
non-existant, same for games. The whole "it's free" argument
isn't much cop either; so is windows for most people. Yes,
with ample time and effort I could make a system that worked
as well as my windows box (and yes, I know it'd be more
secure, but as I don't indulge in either paedophilia or
terrorism, that's not much of a concern either), but really,
in spite of my interest and professional capacity in IT, I
have better ways of spending my time.

Incidentally, before I get cries of "You don't get it!
You've never given Unix a chance!", no, I do, I'm about to
go an use an old AlphaUnix box now. Why? For the only reason
you should use it; because I can't do what I need to (get a
file off a tape written with TAR) on a Windows system.

as i said

it's a server OS :)

the people who preech UNIX to the normal userbase of windows
don't know what they're talking about.. it makes sense if
all that person using windows does is surf the web, write
email, program, and have a good knowledge of computers and
sometimes yearn for easily and instantly accessible (not in
terms of learning curve, but in terms of speed of results)
sorting of textfiles, lists of files in directories (mp3s
for example).. stuff like that.

UNIX just isn't for the average user.

I like the simplicity of having a centered picture with a
black background to read the file types. Its less
irritating.

I need a new picture tho. That should be done in a couple
days once I am done unpacking.

I agree that Unix has its place for servers (although the
gulf between it and Windows isn't half as wide as it used to
be; however, as is usually the case with these things, the
"accepted wisdom" hasn't really caught up in that respect).
I would also say that the majority of Unix fanboys
are the sort of person who thinks every user should
have it on their desktop machine.

A lot of these people don't seem to realise that for most
people, computers are a tool, as opposed to a source of
entertainment/fascination for their own sake.

90% of my job is working with servers, many of which are
unix based, I have years of experience using them, I have a
raft of academic qualifications in computing, I have an
interest in computing in general and I really don't
have the patience to learn more Unix than is strictly
neccesary for my work. Quite how your typical Joe Blow whose
uses for their PC are limited to DLing mp3s for their ipod,
email, chatrooms and Word for the odd letter/essay, can
reasonably be expected to take the time/effort required to
use it as their sole operating system is beyond me.
