I understand why you tutted, it was pointless though. When

then I may use it. Until then. No.

goto vmware.com

goto the VMware Workstation section

download the latest version (5.5.1 for Linux) from the
"Workstation Downloads" section on the right hand side

get a magic number either from myself or a reputable
website

install Windows XP and run it within a virtual machine

admittedly you ain't gonna be running Cubase and Reason
under it (you're better off with a separate partition and
running Windows natively of course) but for other tasks that
aren't as system heavy (watching vids you can't see in
Linux, etc etc etc) it's great

thanks very much, but i don't think that will work for me
for exactly the reasons you describe. i would need a ton of
memory for the sort of programs i would want to run, and i
can do everything else with linux, so... kind of pointless.

ahh well, i think it's great...at least from the perspective
that if i wanna check a website that i can't view in
Konquerer, i don't need to boot Windows, i can just fire up
VMware and run it in a virtual machine

also i can tinker around with other operating systems and so
on :)

just out of curiosity what made you wanna use Linux?

i started using it back in 1997/98 because i have always
loved DOS and command line driven stuff, and i thought
messing about with a UNIX like system would be cool to learn

Not when I tried it. Admittedly, I got it installed after
decoding which was the hard drive I wanted to use. It
wonderfully decided to tell me the serial numbers or
something instead of drive letters.
Wonderful.
Of course, once it was installed there was the hardware
incompatibility errors. I managed to sort that, thank fuck
for work laptops. I couldn't solve one major problem though,
random freezes, couldn't get networking running (wireless
support is a fucking joke) and ethernet wouldn't work
either. Despite following various "official" instructions
and "unofficial" instructions the networking would not work.
I spent a couple of days trying this and gave up and
installed Longhorn for a laugh. Installed straight away,
correct drive letters, multi booted without me having to
test different bootloaders. Networking bang on near enough
from the start. Just had to put in the access codes. This is
beta and it's an easier starting experience. This is
Microsoft. It was easier.
I don't care about command line action. The only command
line I want to use is ipconfig on the odd occasion and
stupid ascii pictures for nostalgia.

ok, well firstly your drive letters are nothing to do with
your physical hard drives but to do with the way that
Windows and DOS sees them. i found this out whilst trying to
get linux set up on my first hard drive and Windows up on my
second one...funnily enough Windows saw my second drive as
C.

i do however understand your frustration with wireless
support, and i totally understand what you mean about trying
to get it up and running - Linux can be a bitch to configure
to your system....but that is both the bain and beauty of it
- a system that you can completely customize to your own
exact specifications...unfortunately it can sometimes
require a lot of time, effort and patience on your part and
some knowledgeable friends.

i had a bastard of a time trying to get my DVD-RAM burner to
work as i wanted it to, same with my floppy drive and
removable media...i had to go in and configure my /etc/fstab
manually so it didn't use subfs to automatically mount the
disks...still not quite got it right.

Linux is a hacker's OS - and no, i don't mean hacker in the
sense of 733T H@x0R...i mean hacker in the sense of a
computer geek like me who really wants to understand a
system different from the status quo, and spend time messing
around with it.

i have to say, i'm disappointed by all the shit i'm gonna
have to do to get a decent MIDI sequencer working on here :(

hahahaha VMWARE. hahahahahaha. ha.

and yeah, using linux as a desktop system.. i don't know
what you're doing.

it's for servers. sure there's openoffice, firefox, (dodgy)
ipod/mp3 player functionality.. but you know when you find a
new killer app, there could be no linux port ever, depending
on how much of a niche app it is.

oh yeah, and unless your monitor looks like this
when you boot your pc into linux, you're not using linux.
you're using some piece-of-shit desktop environment that's
hiding all the nice stuff.

Good point on the drive letters. I always forget that.
However, if they want people to convert they need to find a
middle ground.

i never actually wanted to use linux. my computer died last
spring and i couldn't get windows to reinstall (despite the
efforts of some very computer-savvy xlt-ers who graciously
tried to help me), so i was stuck with linux. i tried a few
horrible styles of it before i got ubuntu to work, and it's
been working ok since i got the hang of it. it really
hasn't been any better than windows at all,
performance-wise. and i lost all my music software.

No way.

Linux observes the POSIX standard.. it's windows that's
out-of-step. trust me, the hda/hdb/hdc1234 etc system makes
much more sense.

everything on the computer is a file. harddrives, monitors,
mice, modems. it's wonderful.

wonderful, that is, for programmers.. not for users. it's
not built as a user OS.. it's a server OS. i seriously can't
stand this whole crucade to get people to change to linux.
it makes no sense..

the distro's like Ubuntu are coming a long way i've

Windows-switchers) but i guess we'll never get rid of the
old Microsoft thing

personally for me, it's not about "oh i've GOT to get the
latest distro on my machine so i can be different!" it's
about the fact that i'm learning a new system that not a lot
of other people will know about (i'm being very loose here)

at the moment my OS experience counts as:

DOS
Windows (pretty much every version except Windows Server
2003 and Longhorn/Vista)
Mac OS 7.6.x
Mac OS 8.x
Mac OS 9.x
Mac OS X 10.x
SuSE Linux (6.0, 7.3 and 10.0)
BeOS Personal Edition
BeOS Professional Edition 5.03

i really wanna get hold of a proper install disc(s)
for OS/2 Warp 4 so i can just learn how to use it.....i
dunno why, but operating systems interest me and i'd like to
know as much as i can about each one....just so i can learn

yeah i was gonna haul you up on having no PC/DOS or OS/2
experience there.

OS's are neat. i used to be into them in a big way. had OS2
warp and the previous version at home. there were many days
when I was at primary school when i'd install it on the
computer when i got home at 3, play around with it, then try
to remove it and get everything back to normal by the time
my parents arrived home at 8.

very nerdy but i had a good time. nice memories. i'm glad
you've checked BeOS out. I loved it when I used to use it -
pity it crashed so much. I have Zeta installed on this
laptop right now but can't use it cos my network card
conflicts with my soundcard and makes this clicking noise...
all my mp3s are on my server, so i have no use for either
piece of hardware without the other.

i need to buy ZETA actually, will probably have to leave it
until a few wage slips down the line though, but i'll be
really happy if i can get it running on my machine....proper
original BeOS won't install on my Athlon64 :( Run's ok in M$
Virtual PC but i haven't tried it in VMware yet

PC/DOS.....isn't that very very very similar to MS-DOS? I
had a tinker around with 4DOS, and quite liked that :)

btw nifty on the little challenges you used to set
yourself....get it all back up and running by 8, that'd
hardly give you enough time to have a play around though
man!

oscillik: yes but once i had figured out partitioning and
made my own boot disk (my dad would've freaked at the sight
of a bootscreen.. he knew his stuff but he'd have been
pissed that i was screwing around with stuff)

PC/DOS is what bill gates stole and brought to form
microsoft and release as MSDOS. yes it's pretty much the
same. you can even play MSDOS games in its later
versions..... in windows in OS2. i was dumbfounded by that.
prince of persia inside a window. wicked.

hehe, i got Windows 1.0 and Windows 2.03 running on Virtual
PC back when i had my PowerBook last year, yes it was quite
funny seeing in front of me what was basically some very
garish colours on my screen! if i remember correctly, (can't
remember if it was Windows 1 or 2) but the way it
represented the director structure of the hard drive wasn't
even icon based - it was still text based, except you
double-clicked on the name of the file/directory!

if i can get a working Mac emulator and ROM i'd be
interested to check out that ancient version of MacOS
though, thanks for the link :D
