I was wondering about explorer versus Internet explorer, but
felt too dumb to mention it.

i thought we were talking about IE

i still don't understand why anyone would need to run
windows on a mac unless you just want to play games

you do realize that the program you are talking about is
called Internet EXPLORER.app whereas the
program i am talking about is called
explorer.exe

they are two totally different things

Yes that's Internet Explorer for the Mac...completely
different to the Explorer which oscillik was referring to.
Explorer is the shell that all windows programs run in.

explorer.exe handles, as ednacniarb said, the whole GUI for
Windows.

i'm probably wrong, but as far as i understand it even
handles drawing of the window widgets and things too.

I've witnessed the same explorer behavior in every machine
bearing win XP i've seen here. Maybe my mind is playing
games with me or they sell us hicks crappy software or
something, but since I can't control that I'll tell you that
I wrote what I saw. I didn't speculate. So the whole
speaking out of my ass comment was a bit presumptuous.

calls me a liar.

I never called anything I wrote a fact. They were more like
questions that would help me make some sense out of the
whole frustrating situation. I am sorry if I wasn't more
clear but comments as harsh as wasting your time and all,
just lead to no result. There is no point of coming in
contact with people if you don't expect them to be ignorant
some times.

well while we're getting all uppity over this, i don't even
remember the first encounter that you mentioned

and for this encounter - why don't you actually find out
about what a topic is about before you go spouting off about
how "you can run explorer in Mac OS X!!!"

Explorer and Internet Explorer are two different things

granted, it's due to Microsoft that there is confusion, but
if you're gonna contribute to a technical thread, make sure
that you have the knowlegde to back up your statements

i'm sorry that your encounters with me have been bad. i
can't really comment on the first encounter, because as i
said i can't remember
but today has been a really bad day for me, so i'm more than
a llittle pissed off when someone is telling me something
that i know for a fact is wrong.

please accept my apologies for having a go at you

as said, i've had a bad day

i know that i shouldn't take things out on you, or anyone
else on this board

I've told you in the past you type unnecessarily technical
for what you are asking for. Most people would just equate
explorer with IE, especially from a non-windows bckground.
And when it comes to talking about computers you get uppity
with people and condecending. Trust me there are people
here who know at least 10 times what you and I know (well
you at least)...

i was trying to renew the dynamic host configuration
protocol lease on my internet protocol address so my
transmission control protocol / internet protocol connection

integrated drive electronics hard drive (which is defined as
a "master" on my basic input output system settings) had a
cycle redundancy check error.

you're right - there are people who know more than i do
about certain things to do with computers.

but i do know certain things that some people do not know.

you have a great wealth of knowledge, and you seem to have a
wide range of platforms in your knowledge. you certainly
know more about Windows than I do, but then again I've only
really had experience with the DOS based Windows OS's. I'm
new to the NT based ones, but I'm learning more and more as
time goes on. But my main focus will be the alternative OS's
because I like to know what can be done with the
non-standard stuff.

I admit it - i can be a bastard. but it's not like i act
like a bastard just for the sake of it. I get uppity about
stuff only if i truly believe that what i know is right. if
i am wrong, then i admit it, as i did when you corrected me
on the difference between XP home and Pro.

ok, so tell me how to do this then...

when you run a program in Mac OS X, it appears in the Dock
by default. How do you make it so that everytime you run the
program, it is invisible in the Dock?

showhidden -bool yes
it will do the trick...but hey you

1) Why would you want to do that?
2) It's a platform specific interface 'tweak' not technical
knowledge.

1) because you may have an application that you don't wan to
appear in the dock, such as a system monitor that sits on
your desktop, that you don't want taking up spacein the
dock

2) i thought you said that i don't know something that other
people do not?

regardless of whether or not it's platform specific, you
said that you doubted i knew something that someone else
does not.

i have just proved you wrong

unless you can come up with the answer, i DO know something
that someone doesn't know
