life is violence
the problem of life is violence
the solution requires a way of dealing with violence
pacifism as such only aims to escape violence
?

If someone lunges at you with a knife, it is possible to
disarm them without resorting to violence. It just requires
some KNOWLEDGE.

The sum radius of a circle is the circ... circ... *gergle*

bolocks is knowledge a defense, confidence + know how + will
is a solid defense. just remember no one deserves to get it
in the shins or the balls more than the person on the
receiving end of you size 12 steelies.

If someone lunges at you with a knife the truly enlightened
man will allow himself to be stabbed. It is clearly
punishment for eating hamburgers in a past life, possibly
with bacon, in which case the knife will be Very Large and
Pointy.

You see, my aim as an Agent of Evil here is twofold - by
perpetuating stereotypes I aim to perpetuate the cycle of
violence.

People who feel victimized or dismayed by violence need to
get onboard the money train by investing in companies like
Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon. That way,
everone's a winner.

Stereotypes exist for a reason- people who believe that
there is no credence in any stereotype are, at
best overly idealistic and at worst, politically correct
zealots who would love to instigate an order of "thought
police" if they could. Discuss.

or just a relaxed order of thought that's at best lazy and
most allows people to make excuses for otherwise
unpermissible acts. I know it's always used as an example,
but the Nazi's really do show what can happen when you take
a population and subject it to stereotypical propaganda.

Oh look they get all the breaks, while we suffer, they get
all the hand outs and the easy life while we work hard under
stress for our breaks. if anyone deserves the breaks it's
us. it ends with you mass murdering an entire people.

It sometimes seems to me that absolute sweeping
generalizations are used by certain people - people who are
uncomfortable with complexity and doubt - as a means to
attain peace of mind by simplifying their worldview.

It's the kind of thing people do in their late teens when
they're "searching". That's why they join cults and become
martyrs - that and the appealing sense of drama they obtain
by polarizing the world into black and white terms and
fancying themselves on the "right" side.

* by cults I also mean political and philosophical cults
like objectivism, communism, neo-conservatism and
Chomskyism.

Don't you think that people often shy too far away from
things like (humane) eugenics, simply because of the
association with the Nazis?

The reason I italicised those words in my preceding post is
to make the distinction between stereotypes and all
stereotypes. Certainly many stereotypes are woefully
innaccurate and it's definately wrong to not give people a
chance to prove they do not adhere to any stereotype you may
have about them.

cults are a body of people that keep themselves enthralled
by their own fear.

how that can relate to a political state in result is hard
to imagine, although I guess you mean as a means to join a
cult rather.

"cults are a body of people that keep themselves enthralled

by their own fear." Yep... cults' power stems from making
the followers believe it is completely neccessary.

"If someone lunges at you with a knife, it is possible to
disarm them without resorting to violence. It just requires

some KNOWLEDGE."

i don't disagree with you re: the lunging knife attack ...
but there are plenty of instances where pacificsm as a
principle
will need to resort to more dissociative
knowledge (i.e. ultimately of another world). this is not to
say that it isn't a successful defence mechanism, and in
some instances this might be unavoidable. it just seems
pacificsm, as a principle is rather pessimistic, and seems
much more like an ideology that colours propogaters of
violence as bad - and by inference comforts themselves with
the knowledge of being good.

however by doing so it seems to place more value on others
than on oneself - and makes for quite a self-persecuting
principle. i'm not saying this principle is wrong or right
... however to claim that pacifism as a principle is right,
or morally good seems quite limiting, if not unecessarily
resentful?

ceri: what do you mean by "humane eugenics?" i agree that
simply the association eugenics has with nazism isn't
grounds to reject it ... but erm ... still sounds a bit like
an oxymoron to me?

aa! I hate when discussions get so big that it would be too
much of a bother to read it all, and still this is a topic
that greatly interests me (ethics is one of my favourite
subjects, and I plan on angling my philosophy-degree towards
it in the end...)

could someone tell me what the current topic is (they tend
to change often through a thread with over 70 posts...)?

I hate violence. REALLY hate it

I've never had a fight in my life. Only ever hit a girl
once in school cause she was bullying me and she didn't hit
back.

I've been threatend with fights etc, but I've always been
able to talk my way out of them, and I'm always the one
helping other people talk through their problems as apposed
to fighting them out

belive people fight when they can't express their feelings
calmly, or just bottle everything up

If someone has a problem with me or something I'm doing I
prefer to be told than hit, don't you?

re: talking your way out.

Yeah, I've talked my way out of quite a few fights..
strangely enough by insulting the people who are picking the
fight, but that's a whole different story...

when it comes to using reason over fists, there aren't
really that many people who think about it.. some have just
grown up in places where force is the way to go if they have
a problem. Like children who were abused.. if they have been
around violence from day 1, how should they REALLY know that
it is wrong?

It came down to the best way to cook and eat Norwegian
persons.

OH YEAH baby we gonna treat you like LUTEFISK

haha! FUCK LUTEFISK! "Smalahovve" iz da zhizzo!

(btw: best way to cook and eat Norwegians: put a bathtub on
a fire, fill it up with 50 litres of water, add two pinces
of salt, a bag of flour, and some sugar. Boil for three
days, and then remove skin. Let it cool off, remove the meat
from the bones, and put it in the skin with herbs. Put it in
the still-hot ashes of the fire, and let it lie there for
three more days. Avoid being caught by the police, and
you've got a meal)

Last year I was held up by three youths, armed with knives (
posted a thread about it at the time)... although
surrounded, and with a knife to my throat, I evaded all
three by following the instincts honed by Shaolin training.
There was no violence involved.

drunken: that definition of "failure" surely amounts to
"tolerance" if its looked at in light of pacifism the
principle. That's not to say that violence is necessarily
the wise option, but it might be in some cases - surely?
