haha! you're damn observant today!
yeah I agree. They look a lot alike.
Perhaps Urkel was suppose to be in the game, but then
Nintendo replaced him with "Little Mac", cause Urkel does
comedy and Nintendo wanted an actiongame with a more serious
tone.

Greatest moment was Mega Man 2. Those Mega Man games are
fucking hard as hell. Now that I think about it, games are
getting easier and easier as time goes on. If it weren't
for games like Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox, I wouldn't have a
challenge.

''Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president?''

Haha, I love that game.

Seanbaby has a nice NES site, I'm sure a lot of you
know about it, but maybe there's a few uninitiated. I've
actually looked through it and read the articles multiple
times, it's always funny and warm. I love his article in
Electronic Gaming Monthly, he only reviews the awful piece
of shit games. Does it with pizazz.

yeah thoose Mega Man games are hard... atleast on
'difficult' (Mega Man 2 is easy on 'easy')...
We ofthen play Mega Man 2 (on easy, and finishing it when
getting drunk) before going out. And Mega Man 2 has got
AWESOME music. I even made a topic about it here on XLT
once.

No shit!!! I LOVE the music from MegaMan2. It's funny that
you should mention it. I haven't played it in over 12
years, but I can remember how the music goes note for note.

i'd like to join the chorus of people saying how wicked NES
is... the number of classic nes games far outnumbers the
number of great games on any of the new systems...
definitely there are some fantastic games now... but they
are few and far between...

and yes, nes games were made waaay harder than most games
after them... i was playing this the other day... so classic

i'd have to say my favourite nes game of all time would be
super dodgeball... it was made by the dudes who made river
city ransom and world cup... international dodgeball... long
before south park aped the idea...

Megaman 2 definitely had some memorable music fo' sho' IMO.

Elysian moments for me in Punch-Out:
Finally figuring out how to beat goddamn King Hippo
Blocking Great Tiger's Mirage Punch for the first time (sooo
satisfying)
Coming face to face with Mike Tyson, and getting your ass
HANDED to you.

finding the burnable bush that lets you into level 8 on
zelda was an amazing feeling... or was it level 7?.. i think
level 7 was the fairy pond, but i'm not sure.

you are correct! level 8 was the bush, level 7 was the pond,
opened with the recorder.

level 1: dead tree
level 2: dungeon in east woods
level 3: dungeon in west (dead) woods
level 4: use the raft
level 5: "up, up, up the mountain ahead"
level 6: the graveyard
level 7: the fairy fountain w/ recorder
level 8: burn bush in east woods
level 9: bomb spectacle rock

but in fucking second quest, damn those dungeons were a
bitch and took forever to find! (so did the damn letter)
level 1: same place
level 2: go to where you got blue ring in first quest
level 3: 2nd dungeon location in first quest, use recorder
level 4: don't remember :S
level 5: level 4 location originally
level 6: use recorder in graveyard
level 7: burn bush west of level 8 original location
level 8: use ladder at river west of waterfall and bomb the
wall
level 9: bomb area west of spectacle rock

fuck man, no new videogame creates the other-worldly feeling
like the classic nes games. i know it's gotta be the age at
which i first started playing, but still. they are so
baddass! i got lost in classic metroid like a motherfucker.
i remember running up my mountain on our gravel road after
school to play that game. that was prolly the most excited
i ever was to find out where a storry was gonna go next.

i hear that. i would spend countless hours just EXPLORING
zelda, and seeing what i could find. hell, even if it was
"pay me for the door repair charge" i didn't care, just
because it was something i didn't see before.

the reason games are not as great anymore is because too
many companies either rely on a movie/cartoon/etc. license,
graphical prowess, or specific audience-targeting tactics
(sex appeal, graphic violence, etc.) or riding the coattails
of other titles in order to succeed. the gaming world is
much more commercialized now. people are more concerned
about profit than innovation - then again, there is not
nearly as much room to innovate these days.

that's why i write video-game stlye music - it brings back
fond memories for me. :)

fuck man, MOTHER BRAIN in Metroid was one of the most
satisfying bosses in an NES game. First off, you had to plow
through metroids a-plenty just to get to that room, (and if
a Metroid latched to you, you were FUCKED) and once you got
there, there was shit being fired at you from everywhere,
you had to blast through five barriers (that regenerated if
you took to long) to get to the brain at last so you could
damage her, and after you finally get her good and dead,
it's time to run like hell, cause "TIME BOMB SET! GET OUT
FAST!"

I love NES. :)

Yep. I'm a big nostalgia freak, and since so much of my
childhood revolved around video games, 8 and 16 bit (still
does), just playing them makes me feel great.

However, that said, I think video games are better than ever
now. If I had a choice between Ninja Gaiden for Xbox or
Ninja Gaiden for NES at 6 years old, I'd play the new one
more. It's a no brainer for me. They're amazing now. If I
was 6, running around Tairon or the Hayabusa Ninja Village,
my head would burst.

But that isn't taking anything away from the classics,
they've got a charm that the new ones admittedly don't.
Super Mario Brothers 3 destroys Mario Sunshine. I still
firmly believe the day I got that yellow box with Racoon
Mario on the front was the most amazing day ever. I couldn't
believe there was a 2nd world after I beat Grassland. And a
3rd, and a 4th... it's still fun, they all are.

13 year olds now probably don't see what's so great about
the first Castlevania... they probably can't get past the
4th level. I know I can barely do it myself. Gaming was
different back then, not necessarily better, not really
worse. Their Wind Waker will be our Link to the Past.
They'll feel the same way about Viewtiful Joe or Ratchet and
Clank that we do about Mega Man 2 and Little Nemo. So I
don't like to put down today's games and just reminisce
about the ''good old days'', every generation will get
something great out of their games, every successive console
generation has enough truly great groundbreaking stuff.
Younger kids now will have their own sappy memories about
this generation of games.

I wonder what kind of feeling I'll get when I play something
like Halo or Splinter Cell or (God willing!) Perfect Dark
Zero in 15 years. I know Mario 64 and Goldeneye already give
me the warm and fuzzy feelings, and they're all of 7 years
old. But then again, that IS one third of my entire life.
Wow.

One day, we'll all die... like the World War 2 veterans...
someday there won't be anyone left from the NES years.

And I know it's not NES, but has anyone else played Traysia
for the Genesis? Super underrated hybrid RPG that I had no
idea existed until I stumbled on it in my ROMs folder. I
think the Town Theme at the start of the game is right up
there with Koji Kondo's Pinna Park Amusement as the best
thing I've ever heard.

i definitely agree with you on all of that...

... but seriously... have you played turbo grafx?! that was
like one of the first 16 bit systems! and it plays mostly
nintendo like games, only with more processing power..
honestly Bonk's adventure and Bonk's return should be as
well known as the original mario games!

i totally agree. i just think there are far fewer games that
will be remembered as "classics" these days than there were
in the NES days. NES was the golden age of gaming.

Yep, I play around 1/3 of my nes carts reasonably regularly
(about 10 games) and have done for the past 15 years or so.
Compared to say, the Snes, where I play only two or three
games on and my DC (where I have about 120 games) where I
play about 5. The Nes definately has the highest proportion
of classics and is the console I've probably racked most
hours on.

Ha ha, I remember when that came out. The kid next door and
his brothers (who were always around) disappeared for
a week. I didn't see them at all. I called for them and it
turned out they'd been holed up playing that. When they
brought it over and I had a go I was amazed. Just the sheer
size of the game and the depth of play.
