Just beat Adventure Island for NES. This is a glorious day. It's taken me about 15 years to beat this game. Here is a screenshot of the amazing ending you get to see.
I didn't even know I was trying to rescue someone named Tina?
What are your most elysian NES moments?

Gaming was soooo much tougher back then. There's lots of games that I loved that I still haven't beaten, decades later. I recently beat Shadow of the Ninja for the first time, and that made me feel unstoppable. In fact, I beat a lot of ninja games after Ninja Gaiden for Xbox got me in the mood. I still can't beat Revenge of Shinobi, though. Diabolical.

But I kinda like the game, it's funny I think.

That's a real shitty thing about Milon's Secret Castle, there is no "immunity period" after getting hit by an enemy, so there is the potential to get hit over and over again until you die.
There is a secret that the shop owner tells you. Once you beat the Level 1 Boss (the brown jumping turd-man), you can continue if you get game over by holding Left and pressing Start. If it weren't for this, this game would be impossible (and is still very, very hard)... HORRIBLE ending. :)

what shopkeeper tells you that secret? I didn't know! (thanks). Yeah the game is hard, I had to get the guide before I understood how to find objects and hidden stuff (I only had the rom, not the original game (which btw, I think was never released in Sweden).
I remember last summer you helped me with Goonies 2 when I had forgotten where the hammer was...
I admire you. NES = NicES.

After about 15 years of trying, finally beating Marble Madness on the NES. Within a few weeks I had managed to do it with 22 seconds left on the clock!
I've got a NES emulator with all my favourite games on it on my GBA, as well as my real NES permanently set up at my parents' house. Super Mario Bros 2 (Japanese Version) is probably my favourite game for it currently.

CONTAINS SMB2 SPOILERS:
Super Mario Bros 2 is so crazy! It's so surreal. but I really enjoyed playing it as a kid. I lended a friend my SMB2 last year... haven't gotten it back yet.
I guess it's time to get it back! but my NES is kinda broken, so it would more be because I want my beautiful box back.
Anyway, yeah it's a good game. bUt very surreal (and it all takes place in Mario's dream, doesn't it?)

Sadly, I can't get (or make) a .nes file of Super Mario 2 (Japanese Version), it's only as .fds (famicom disk file), which isn't (so far as I know) compatible with Pogoshell. I still haven't had a chance to look into it in detail though, but I'll have a nice lull in my work in a couple of weeks time, so I'll check it then.
Key: Yes, I completed that one. I remember getting it one Christmas... I foolishly traded it for "keeps" for Super Off Road with a mate a few years later once I had completed SMB2 several times. However, the game I refered to in my other post is completely different- it looks more like SMB 1 and is incredibly hard. It only go a release outside japan as "The Lost Levels" on Super Mario Allstars on the Snes and as a hidden game on Super Mario DX on the GB.

aaahhh the real smb2.
I have a .NES file of that somewhere.
The Super Mario Brothers 2 game that had all the psychedelic enemys and stuff was originally a game released in Japan called Doki Doki Panic, which was apparently, hugely popular so they replaces the characters with mario luigi, toad and princess.. hence the largest departure from any of the other mario games (all different music, etc)

i don't consider these games "Shit" by any means. in my opinion, they are classics, and i still love them. you don't see anyone calling classic films shit, because they are still enjoyable to certain audiences. and besides, many games for the NES back in the day were made for gamers to become good at them, rather than target specific groups with particular content or fancy graphics. i guess longtime gamers can appreciate older games much easier though. :)
anyways, i have MANY fond memories of my NES - Zelda's end was always enjoyable to me, the music for Fester's Quest, the Sky Castle on Rygar and that amazing sinister music, Super Mario 3 fucking with head at the end making me think the princess was in another castle (i was seriously about to go into a rage when i first saw that), the joy of finding those tricks to beat all the opponents on Mike Tyson's Punch-Out - i can't possibly name them all.
But the first game i beat (on my own) was Bionic Commando. The first game i beat overall was Contra, with a friend. Nothing like fighting INSIDE a final boss, shooting its heart to death.

Ohhh I'm a longtime gamer, have no fear of that.......but I'm also someone that doesn't cling to the past. Yeah sure those games were great in there day, but they are very dated.......what is available now, is by far much more superior, and thats what I enjoy, good gameplay and great graphics.
I still enjoy playing classics like Pacman, but as addictive as it might be, the graphics stink in comparison. And thats what I'm talking about - the comparison.

I don't understand how you're reasoning. The experience is subjective. And there are a lot of older games that I'd MUCH rather play (because I enjoy playing them more) than newer games.
I also do enjoy low-fi music and pixel-gfx a lot, and don't care much about games gfx (I only did that as a kid)...
All I care about is how much I enjoy playing the games, and that's all that should matter. And that is timeless I tell you. If you require "good graphics" to enjoy a game, so be it, but that's not the case with me.
