A more complex beat isn't necessarily a more pleasant one.

But I will say this: Venetian Snares hasn't been around very long, only like 3 years? I'd say if I heard only the stuff that Richard did in his first 3 years that I wouldn't think much of him. So I think VSnares could be set to do some great stuff.
Not to say that I dislike VSnares at all, I already quite like stuff that I've heard, it's just not 'amazing' or anything I guess, but good stuff none the less.

but aphex started before there was an internet. Before there was computers that could do anything more than sequence midi. Aphex's beats are more complex than vs when it comes to finesse, complexity in tone, shape, timber. Richards drum rolls are flawless in timber. He has an incredible skill at knowing how to bring sounds together.

first of all, i;d like to say that Mu-Ziq's album is just as worthy a drill album (when it drills) as the Chocolate Wheelchair Album(with regards to Xammax's comment), and i'm not saying this out of a bias for Mike P... as much as i liked him, i hardly saw what all the fuss was about until i heard bilious paths... whereas i've listened to virtually every Snares recording that exists and own more Snares vinyl than any other artist in my collection.... as far as the afx vs. snares debate goes i'd side with afx... but listening to his most recent tracks (Mangle 11, and the bug remix)... if he doesn't come up with something new fast, he's going to start sounding very repetitive... whereas snares is managing to diversify his sound from album to album quite nicely these days, which is an achievement, considering the amount of output in the amount of time he has been around... i won't deny that he falls into loops that are similar from album to album, but overall... he has managed to cultivate a progression (not necessarily forward, but different)...
and when squarepusher is on point... he knocks the fuck out of both of them... (unfortunately, his melodies are not up to snuff with afx...)
.... here's hoping we can expect great new releases from Snares and Pusher... and hopefully a lovely forward sounding release from Afx...

Heh... to be fair I'm not really the one to judge on drill albums this year since most drill has bored me fucking senseless since Drukqs!
What makes Snares interesting to me is just that: he's interesting. He stands out. His work is so varied that I can just keep listening and listening and never get bored, and the way he throws seemingly random sounds into a track and manages to keep it altogether... don't get me started! Unmistakable style too.. I mean, who else was going to put out a track like Einsten Rosen-Bridge?

Aphex by a huge margin.
But the Funk is winning me over. The album coming in 2004 sounds like it should be his best yet and the most compatible with my tastes. Can't wait.
But currently, none of his albums are good enough to be on my regular rotation. Good, but not THAT good. I respect him more than I enjoy him.

i haven't heard much snares so i can't decide on which one is better though i've always liked squarepusher drills a bit more than afx's. afx has got better melodies though, that's true.

i would say now, afx, but snares is becoming bigger and better.
plus imo, the way you make the sounds doesnt matter. A 4/4 beat still sounds the same in principle whether it was made with a 50 piece band played by retarded llamas, or a drum machine.

I think they are both very different but i like them both alot, i think i preferaphex but i am still relativel new to snares soi will give him a chance.
On the squarepusher issue i think alot of the breaks he uses are from old jungle tracks or that's what it sounds like to me but everything on hard normal daddy sounds like he created it.
For an example,Listen to intelligent woman but dj rap then listen to come on my selector and you will see what i mean.

You just think of a time signature that's not 4/4 and assume that is what he is using because it is cool not to use 4/4 apparently.
