If thi story is true, then it has already begun. mp3s designed to exploit flaws in all the popular media players and report you to the RIAA have been distributed on the major p2p networks.
This is certainly possible, but I believe this is a hoax because there is a lot of scaremongering language in "Gobbles" message.
This kind of thing *will* happen if the Berman law passes in the US Congress, and nuts to the rest of the world...

mp3-virus is complete shit. you got to find a security bug in a specific player and than you can maybe infect one version of one player with a certain file. there is no way of a large scale invasion. technically it's almost impossible, not to speak from the fact that riaa pretends to be on the side of the law.
i've been in touch with copying of all sorts of media, starting with early pc games, console games, audio, video, dvd and stuff. riaa will never succeed. there are a small bunch of grey-skinned guys against an army. just remember the redicolous copy protections last year, for example, druqks was copy-protected, it took me fife minutes to get an update for my cd-driver. the 'high-end'-sony-shit is conquered by drawing a thin line on the edge of the cd, hehe
man, we have seen copy protections come and go, anyone remember the password sessions with the old pc games? hehe

Soon you will need a license to own and operate a general purpose computer. And to own programming tools you will need to be a licensed and bonded programmer who submits urine samples regularly.

I think this kind of attack could be successful.
If you infected the albums of the top 20 or so downloaded artists on Kazaa with exploits for MusicMatch, Winamp, and Windows Media Player, you would reach a lot of people.

genghis is an independent company and i also doubt that mr.musicmatch will let his program be a means of terror for the riaa. mp3 only contains data so there is no way of appending a virus. it's not as easy as it may seem, because you actually have to corrupt the audio device first from somewhere outside. any simple firewall usually does a good job.
i know of only one example where mp3's played a (minor) role: old winamp playlists longer than 65535 files caused winamp to crash, but before that the data behind the last entry was interpreted as program code. by manipulating a playlist you could get any software running, but first you had to make the user download the playlist. it's not that easy to invade a computer.
fleetmouse: i don't see things that dark. the reason why we always hear these roumors about how riaa will fuck us is cause they really are scared to death at the moment. it's a sign of weakness, not of strength; i've heard a lot of stories about tracking some fileshareguy down, but it never happend to anybody i had contact with. they wanna make people afraid of using kazaa and stuff because they have no other idea how to rescue their jobs

The Republicans are in power in the US at the moment. They will pass laws that are beneficial to Microsoft and the large media corporations. They will sell it as anti-terrorism.
Most people don't know better and won't care that their computers are no longer computers but heavily monitored pay per use media kiosks with some light emailing and word processing capabilities.
The rest of the world will be strongarmed into complying by virtue of threats and bribery.

I had originally written a pretty long reply, but it was boring as shit ... but the condensed version is: these viruses are possible, firewalls wouldn't stop them (your updated anti-virus would) and there are many more flaws in media players and operating system than the one you mention.

launching virus attacks would wash away riaa's credibility. and that's the last thing they have 'cause they can't win processes without. btw mcaffee has not taken notice of a single mp3-virus up to now so i consider this to be a hoax
you can maybe corrupt complex programs but not the simple ones which only stream the file, no way, i wrote a simple player once, i can't see how it could be corrupted
whatsoever, they are the ppl in trouble, not we :))

the main media players i.e. windows media player, quicktime and real player are all dreadfull bloated pieces of over complex software that insert themselves into the operation system like parasites that can never be fully removed, and spy on your activity. i think theres plenty of scope for "backdoors" into them...
however if we all just used very simply player that merely played mp3s then we would have peace of mind

Mr.record company man. I am terrible sorry that I happen to have some copys of your albums. Im sorry.
Deeply sorry. I wish I had more money so I could afford to buy at least 5 cd's a year. Maybe I should get a better education in the future so I can get a better job with a better salary.
Mayby This whole thing is more than just a problem with copying, or stealing as you call it.
If my neigboour or my friends had better jobs and more money we mayby could afford to buy metallicas new cd.
...but how is it with casettes? My mom has a lot of beatles etc.. on tape and I think she copied some to her friends back in the eighties.
Is that bad? or isnt it the same? ARE YOU GOING TO STOP THE INVASION OF THE CD-R's too`?

trouble is developers can't code a player that plays RA or QT without having to pay some stupid royalty. infact i don't think they allow 3rd party players AT ALL. anyone know of a media player that can play QT or RA files? (other than quicktime and realplayer obviously)

There was a tv program here in sweden about this problem... and they talked to a guy... who had heard of a band called " kent ".
The guy explaines that he went to the cd store to buy the cd by Kent but discoverd that the cd had copy protection. Dissapointed he walked away from the store, yes he was dissapointed cause he hadnt a so called "normal" cd player. he only had a computer and a mp3 player and had it becouse it was more practical in his job where travels alot. He didnt want to take all his cd's everyday to work.
...So the guy wrote a letter to the record company and explained why he didnt want to buy the new Kent cd and added 100 swedish kr in the envelope.
So instead of buying the album, I'm giving you this money and downloading the album from the internet.
