zaphod..... i have listened and i do honestly dislike this
band.... and i think they are mainstream and they attempt to
be mainstream but also try to he hard asses and say "no were
not, we never want to be mainstream".... this band has done
nothing original, it continually eveloving by listeneing to
others music and trying to blend it intop theirs... ever
since the start.

um. well for one i don't think they blend it on top of their
music but more into their music. radiohead are a band filled
with influences, but, with the exception of a couple of
songs and they're first album, they don't wear the
influences on their collective sleeve. its cool if you don't
like them, but their image is unimportant. i'm also sick of
these afx fans/lambs saying "well, rdj says they suck, must
be true." frankly, rdj seems like an asshole. i love his
music, and hes entitled to his opinion, but don't take it as
being the endall of music criticism.

"this band has done
nothing original, it continually eveloving by listeneing to

err...isnt this kinda what most musicians tend to do?
i dont think there are any artists who create music within a
total vacuum..
the most original artists are the ones who manage to blend
others music together the most creatively...

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2002-07-30 06:21 [#00330100]

exactly. they evolve as all artists do. within music, people
choose to express themselves in various ways using different
instruments, and radiohead are simply trying something new.
its the same as afx doing straight piano on drukqs. you
liked that didn't you? radiohead are entitled to
experimentation, and if it makes them a better band, then
more power to them.

i do love me somes radiohead, but you've got to notice the
similarities between idioteque and 4...
play 4 slow or idioteque fast... they're very similar, at
least when 4 is in one of the parts with less snare...

zaphod RDJ is an asshole and a very funny one at that :),

wayout there are a hell of a lot of artists that listen to
no music for a month or two before they start making
music....

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2002-07-30 06:35 [#00330107]
Points: 4428 Status: Addict

gotta agree that rdj is funny. i mean if you hate radiohead,
fine. just do it because you actually, profoundly dislike
their music, not because you don't like thom yorke (who also
happens to seem like an asshole, and not a very funny one)
or their image.

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2002-07-30 06:36 [#00330108]

and yeah, supposedly rdj and boc create music in a "total
vacuum", or atleast used too.

ok listen to these radiohead songs and tell me they're not
being original:
my iron lung
climbing up the walls
pearly*
morning bell
like spinning plates
kinetic
fog
worrywort

you just hold them to ridiculous standards just cos they're
popular AND respected among music buffs.

btw roygbivcore: i do not hear similaries between 4 and
idioteque at ALL.

yeah...but that doesnt mean they completely forget all the
music thats inspired them ...artists sometimes avoid
listening to music while working on their own to lessen the
distraction... (coinicidentally, radiohead are one of these
bands...)

you have to remember that most musicians start making music
because they were inspired by the work of others

Radiohead has a great style, I very much like them. I don't
listen to them as much simply because i'm out constantly
ingesting/consuming new styles (currently scientific
synthetic japanese minimal/ambient is on the menu), But if i
didn't have programs like soulseek, and was stuck with the
few cd's i deem worthy enough to buy, i'd definatly listen
to radiohead a lot more.

About Kid rock disliking them, well, that's his opinion, and
he's entitled to it. I personally don't know what to think
of the man's personality (i've never met him), but i don't
care much for his music. Maybe he got swindled on ebay. He
placed bids for Osama bin laden paper, but got fucked, and
they sent him radio head, and he had to use SOMETHING
creative for the video.

wayout there is a difference between being inspired and
listening to someones music and saying "cool... i am going
to put this shit on my next record"

the last four he listed: fog, kinetic, worrywort, and like
spinning plates, are original as anything i've heard from
afx or anyone else, and they're mindblowingly good.

"musical vacuum" is a bullshit concept, you're always
influenced by the music you listen to. RDJ may be a
masterful and innovative composer of electronic music but
his music always has reference points. i don't have to even
analyze his 80s and early 90s stuff, i think most of you are
quite familiar with the electronic scene at that time. and
listening to drukqs (perhaps my fave aphex twin album) i
hear a lot of influences from squarepusher and bogdan
raczynski. whoever said that a lot of people on this board
just talk shit about radiohead cos RDJ's gone on record to
say he doesn't like their music (and he's never been
specific about why) couldn't be more right. isn't it ironic
that you put down mainstream music only to be a sheep in
underground music?

well now what the hell did rdj do with eric saties music?
because it sure as hell sounds like hes taken the trois
gymnopodies, slowed them down even more, and done very
little to change them on drukqs.

yes, but they have also claimed to be influenced by many
other artists..
when they say they make music in a 'vacuum' they dont mean
they make music without ever having heard anyone else's
music before..

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2002-07-30 06:50 [#00330134]

ok fine. but you only point out radioheads fault in aspiring
to make music that may bear some resemblance to that of
others. what about squarepusher- jaco pasorious.
or afx - all 80's detroit techno, especially LFO, and satie
and even squarepusher.

i'm on a 56k modem as well! anyway, my iron lung is on 'the
bends', 'climbing up the walls' ok computer, 'morning bell'
kid a, 'like spinning plates' amnesiac - find someone who
has these albums and give these songs a listen (i assume
you've heard these albums before to have such a strong
opinion on the band).

all artists borrow ideas and the best ones warp them into
something new, which is exactly what radiohead have done.
your reasons for disliking them just don't seem at all
valid.

Yeah, i notice that hipocracy that many "cultures." A few
days ago a bunch of "goths" were putting down this
sterotypical, yellow-vest wearing, "prep" for browsing
around HOT TOPIC, and all i could think about is the simple
fact that they were just as bad as the ppl who they tell me
they hated, for the very same reasons they hated them.

This phenonina happens in all circles. I don't get it. I
thought the whole idea of escaping trends where putting down
something, or blindlessly following an icon was the trendy
thing to do, so that you can asociate amognst those whole
share the same valuse. Not to create a new arena where the
escaped become the captors.

pitiful.

Switch: you must have a VERY generous opinion of people's
musical tastes cos in my view most people don't like that
sort of stuff. i don't know what country you live in but in
the united states the radio (nor mtv) does not play anything
like "worrywort."

you seem to be under the impression that thom york went out
and bought lp5 and the rdj album a day before they started
recording kid a and said 'ok this is what our next album is
going to sound like' ...he had been into electronic music
all along (he was in an electronic group during college) hes
even said that artists like aphex and ae were more of an
inspiration on ok computer..

supposedly after the whole ok computer situation, he became
fed up with rock music and wanted to get as far away from it
as he could..so he went back and started listening to all
that warp stuff again..

titsworth (its strange typing this word), is right.
radiohead are almost never played on radio in the us, and
when they are its either creep or karma police. i can't
think of a mainstream radiostation or music channel airing
Worrywort. in fact that song has always reminded me of
ambient works with the haze of nostalgia that seems to
surround it. i would think of all their songs an afx fan
would actually like that one.

"Like Spinning Plates" is an incredibly original song and I
have heard nothing like it. And if you want to get all
abstract too then "Fitter Happier" is really original as
well.

But if you still insist they are unoriginal, since when does
an artist have to make completely groundbreaking music to be
good? I like some bands that are very 'inspired' by others
but still write great music.

radiohead is one of the most original and innovative bands.
i know they are not everyone's cup of tea, wheather it's
thoms voice, the tempo of some of the songs, the
lyrics.....etc... but you have to ADMIT that they are
TALENTED!!

OK Computer is FLAWLESS!!! =0)

To say that Aphex doesn't have influences is ridiculous.
Listen to SAW2, then hear some Steve Reich and Philip Glass.
AFX may as well have called is 'Selected Reichist Works' or
something...

I wouldn't say My Iron Lung is original, quite like The
Pixies I think.
Neither's Fitter Happier, although it is rather nice.

To those saying that Radiohead aren't mainstream, well,
Radiohead made number one in the album charts with their
last two albums in both the US and the UK, and probably a
whole load of other countries aswell. If somebody who gets
to number one like that isn't mainstream, who is?
